It was the only front engined rear-wheel-drive car in the compact segment. In March 2007 the revised five-door range was introduced and the 1 Series three-door models followed in May. Since then the coupe has been added to the line-up, whilst the rag-top convertibles joined the range in April. No matter what body style, BMW’s aim for its ‘baby’ 1 Series range is uncompromising driving dynamics and a product aimed at a new generation of customers that can join the brand for the first time because of its relatively affordable price. Increasingly more likely converts to the 1 Series will be business and retail down-sizers being driven out of 3 Series and 5 Series models because of the higher cost of living, fuel prices, road taxes and company car taxation. Best selling BMW 1 Series BMW will sell around 30,000 1 Series in the UK this year, an increase from just over 23,000 in 2007. The largest selling models will be the five-door variants, although the more sporty looking three-door versions are proving to be more popular than expected, especially with younger and older customers who do not have the need to carry children with them on a regular basis. BMW 1 Series three-door hatchback on-the-road prices from April start at £16,185, five-door models begin at £16,715 but under the current economic climate it is the 118d lower CO2 variants which interest me most. The three-door versions with this turbodiesel engine start from a reasonable £18,350 and five-door versions from £18,880. Both body styles are available with Standard, ES, SE and M Sport levels of specification. My test car was the 118d SE three-door priced at £20,300, more or less the same price as the smaller MINI Cooper D Clubman with Chilli option pack. That has a 1.6-litre turbodiesel engine whilst the larger BMW 1 Series 118d has a 2.0-litre unit. Whilst some customers will be interested in style and fuel economy afforded by the MINI Clubman, the better proposition is the 1-Series - three or five-door - and both are premium brands. In truth the BMW 1 Series has as its main competitor the Audi A3, also available in three and five door bodystyles and that range also has sub 120g/km green ‘e’ variants with 1.9-litre, 119g/km TDI engines priced at £16,660 and £17,160 plus options. So with like-for-like specification the Audi A3 TDIe and the BMW 118d are more or less the same price. The A3 is due for a facelift shortly so prices might increase. The 118d has slightly more power and torque than the A3 TDIe so it is faster both for top speed and acceleration and the BMW’s engine is certainly more refined. However the A3 is more economical with an average fuel consumption of 62.7mpg and my test car achieved exactly that. The CO2 figures are the same at 119g/km so the same £35 road tax bill applies. The BMW 118d is supposed to officially return 62.8mpg but my test car covering the same sort of week long driving conditions as the A3 only recorded a disappointing 47.8mpg. BMW 1 Series' practicality In my view the BMW 1 Series 118d three-door is marginally the better car overall of the two because it is more user friendly and currently more modern. It is easier to see out of when parking, there is more rear seat legroom, just, and the engine is much quieter but not so fuel-friendly. Neither car will really cause their owners any regrets and perhaps the Audi brand’s desirability is currently stronger for some people. Back to the test car in question. The three-door 1 Series looks much more of a sporty car than its five-door stable-mate, almost coupe in side profile. The heavily contoured side styling lines, the low side sills, the bold BMW front end and the neat tailgated rear combine to create a smart package. The 118d in SE form is pretty well equipped with a six-speed manual transmission, 16-inch lightweight steel wheels, six airbags, stability and traction control, remote control alarm, 60/40 folding rear seats, twill cloth upholstery, electrically operated door windows and heated mirrors, on-board computer, stereo radio/CD player, automatic climate control, sports steering wheel with multifunction buttons and rear parking sensors. The EfficientDynamics package includes low rolling resistance tyres, automatic engine stop/start, intelligent alternator with brake energy capture, electromechanical power steering, optimum gearchange indicator and aluminium suspension components. The six-speed manual transmission has longer fifth and sixth gear ratios to optimise fuel economy so the driving experience on country roads is a little different to other high torque diesel cars. It is necessary to drive in fifth gear at mid range speeds rather than sixth in some circumstances. There is enough torque to keep gear changes to a minimum and let the engine do the work when acceleration from 50 to 70mph is required. On open roads and motorways the high gearing makes for relaxed and economical driving. The stop/start system, which can be switched off, works well and there are quite a number of cars with it, but it will take newcomers to the technology a short time to get used to it. Come to a halt, disengage gear, on with the handbrake and the engine stops. Put your foot on the clutch - engine starts automatically. I like the looks of the BMW 1 Series three-door, it’s smart, but I like the performance and low taxation costs of the 118d engine even more. MILESTONES BMW 118d SE Three-Door Hatchback. Price: £20,300. Engine: 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel, 143hp, 300Nm from 2,000rpm. Performance, 130mph, 0-62mph 8.9 seconds, 62.8mpg (47.8mpg actual) CO2 emissions: 119g/km VED Band: B £35, Benefit in Kind tax: 13%. Insurance group:11E For: Excellent handling with front engine and rear wheel drive layout, great engine, low emissions, reasonable fuel economy, nice styling, smart interior. Against: Petrol-heads need to look elsewhere, the test car returned nowhere near the official mpg figure, must-have options will increase the price and your company car tax costs, rear legroom limited so an ideal car for singles or couples. 6 ISSUES FOR £1 Search Car Reviews: You're in - Car Reviews: First Drives BMW 1-Series BMW 118d SE BMW's 118d isn't the prettiest hatchback around, but the uprated engine is smooth, well insulated and delivers decent performance Auto Express Car Reviews Text: Oliver Marriage / Photos: Pete GibsonMay 2007 Rating: It's not only power that BMW is promoting at the moment. The firm has a new entry-level car, the three- door 1-Series, and is using it as a launch pad for EfficientDynamics. They also feature a clever brake energy regeneration system with a special alternator that recharges the battery, plus an automatic engine stop-start function.BMW's latest buzzword is marketing speak for technology which is aimed at enhancing both power and efficiency. Or in other words, more speed for less fuel. What this means is that all 1-Series models - with the exception of automatics and the high-performance 130 - are now kitted out with run-flat tyres that have less rolling resistance, and an optimum gearshift indicator. They also feature a clever brake energy regeneration system with a special alternator that recharges the battery, plus an automatic engine stop-start function. The latter is the most noticeable addition in day-to-day driving. Come to a halt at a set of traffic lights, for instance, and when you select neutral and release the clutch, the engine switches off. It fires again when you press the pedal. Very clever stuff. As a result of these new features, the 118d now has a combined economy figure of 60.1mpg and CO2 emissions of only 123g/km - that's 10mpg and 27g/km better than the outgoing engine. This is all the more impressive when you learn it offers an increase of 21bhp and 20Nm over the previous unit. What's more, we reckon the rear-wheel-drive 1-Series - never the most practical or spacious of hatches - is at its best as a sportier three-door. Not least because it's £530 cheaper than the more practical model and boasts frameless side doors. The uprated engine is smooth, well insulated and delivers decent performance, while the EfficientDynamics hardware has lowered consumption and emissions. That should ensure that this BMW, unlike the M5 Touring, is guaranteed to find favour with those wanting to improve their green credentials. 6 ISSUES FOR £1 Search Car Reviews: You're in - Car Reviews: New Reviews BMW 1-Series The 118d proves that low-emission, high-economy cars can be exciting, too. Auto Express Car Reviews Rating: For : Superb economy, involving handling and sharp dynamics, smooth and powerful Against : Harsh ride, lack of practicality Driving Don’t worry that the current generation of ‘green’ cars are dull to drive. The 118d lays that to rest. The engine is mounted far back in the chassis, while the rear-wheel-drive layout gives the BMW crisp dynamics. Quick steering, good body control, sharp brakes and a rewarding gearshift all add to its alert, eager feel. The 143bhp 2.0-litre turbodiesel is smooth and refined too, picking up eagerly around town despite long gearing – it’s remarkably flexible. Performance is very strong as well, helping it drive further ahead of its rivals. It hits 60mph in 9.1 seconds, and has a maximum of 130mph. It features engine stop-start, which works seamlessly. Come to a halt, select neutral and raise the clutch, and the engine stops. Press the clutch and it fires instantly, making it a very unobtrusive system. MarketplaceIf you opt for a cleaner car, do you need to sacrifice performance and desirability? Not according to BMW. The maker has fitted its EfficientDynamics package across the 1-Series range, and the 118d is the cleanest of the lot. It comes in all trim guises, so buyers can choose from ES, SE and M Sport trims, rather than a specific ‘eco’ variant. Efficiency measures include low rolling resistance tyres, six long gear ratios, engine stop-start and a regenerative alternator that only charges when the brakes are applied. Rivals include the Audi A3 1.9 TDIe, Volkswagen Golf Bluemotion, SEAT Leon Ecomotive and the Ford Focus ECOnetic. OwningThe BMW’s cabin isn’t that practical. Its rear-drive layout means it can’t match more conventional hatchback rivals for back seat room or boot space. But, with a small, chunky steering wheel and an excellent driving position, you can’t fault the 118d’s comfort up front, and there’s a sporty feel to the cabin. BMW hasn’t hidden its eco credentials either: the company has fitted a handy gearshift indicator. It’s not all good news, though. The ride is firm at low speeds, and the taut suspension fails to absorb bumps adequately. The BMW hops on rural roads and there’s a firm edge plus some tyre noise on the motorway. As for economy, though, there’s no doubting the BMW’s credentials. Officially, it returns a remarkable 62.8mpg, and emits 119g/km of CO2 (giving low rates of annual VED). Even our rigorous testing saw it return 49.6mpg – an exceptional result. The 118d also enjoys strong long-term retained values, too. Expert Rating: If any BMW 1 Series was destined to be overlooked, it's probably the 118d. It shouldn't be. Andy Enright makes a case for the entry-level dieselIf the BMW 118d featured in a high-school yearbook, it would never be student Most Likely To Succeed or Outgoing Prom Queen. It would be the hard worker who everybody forgot even existed, overshadowed by its more illustrious siblings. The 1 Series line up is currently structured in such a way that the petrolheads will gravitate to the 120i or perhaps the 130i, the bargain hunters will buy the 116d and those looking for some mid-range muscle will opt for the 120d. Which leaves the 118d. Surely a car this good deserves a little play?Priced around £1,500 less, model for model, than the 120d, the engine is still capable of putting on quite a show. Although there's very little in it when it comes to fuel economy or emissions, the 118d scores a decisive advantage over the 120d when it comes to insurance costs, being rated a full three groups lower at Group 11. For the record, thanks to BMW's EfficientDynamics programme, the 118d will return a combined fuel economy figure of 62.8mpg and emits 119g/km grammes of carbon dioxide per kilometre, putting it on par with some superminis. This remarkable showing is thanks, in part, to BMW's Brake Energy Regeneration technology that uses energy that would have been lost under braking to recharge the car's battery. Where the 118d starts to become a more compelling choice is when budgetary constraints are taken into account. All 1 Series models are pretty pricey when essentials like alloy wheels, air conditioning and metallic paint are factored into the equation, and the 118d stays just the right side of £20,000 for the Sport and SE models that feature such kit - an important psychological barrier for many buyers and often a cut-off point for company car user/choosers. Ignore the base price of £18,500 for the basic three-door model - nobody but the most craven badge snob will drive a 1 Series without the aforementioned kit. The £21,000 BMW ask for the SE variants is far more indicative of `real' 118d money, although you can pay over £1,000 less for the ES derivative which has most of the key niceties. At the top of the range, meanwhile, sits the M Sport model with its lower spoilers and sills, bigger alloy wheels and M Sports suspension. The five-door cars come in at just over £500 more model for model."Although the heart may say 120d, the head more often than not opts for the 118d"The only significant difference between the 118d and the 120d is in the engine management software. This limits the junior model to 143bhp and credits the 120d with the full 177bhp monty. BMW played a smart trick with the petrol-engined cars (gearing the less powerful 116i so that its performance disadvantage was nullified somewhat in the lower gears) but have chosen not to do likewise with the 118d. The upshot of this is that the 118d will feel a little sluggish if you drive it back to back with the 120d, but otherwise it's an agreeably swift hatch, notching off the dash to 60mph in less than nine seconds and running on to a top speed of 130mph. The big selling point of the 1 Series is rear wheel drive and although the 118d doesn't possess tyre-scorching power to capitalise fully, you'll still notice the benefits. Deploying the full quota of 300Nm of torque as you accelerate out of a side turning would, in a front-wheel drive car, generate copious torque steer, that raggedy tugging of the steering wheel as the front tyres struggle to put down the power. Even at higher speeds, front-wheel drive cars with a hefty slug of torque can veer rather dramatically when they come `on-cam'. Just try accelerating hard in a Ford RS Focus with your hands off the wheel. On second thoughts don't. A ditch could beckon. There's none of this corrupting influence with the 118d. About the most extreme thing that ever happens is that in damp conditions the ESP light will give a little blink as it winds the power back slightly. Most of the time it just grips and goes. No drama, no writhing steering wheel or tramping axle. Just purity. Things aren't all ambrosia however. Open one of the narrow back doors on the five-door models and you'll spot the trade off right away. There's less room in the back of the 1 Series than you'll find in a supermini like a Honda Jazz. With a six-footer behind the wheel, legroom is shockingly bad and the transmission tunnel means that you won't ever want to travel piggy in the middle on the rear bench. That's not what the 1 Series is all about. If you want a practical car, go and buy a mini-MPV. If you want the latest urban bauble that will turn heads and get tongues wagging, the 1 Series will be more your thing. At a stroke, it manages to make the Audi A3 look ridiculously staid. Today's 1 Series now features a larger kidney grille for improved airflow to the engine. The lower front spoiler has also been reprofiled to create a larger air intake, while the spoiler protrudes further for a more pronounced, sporting look. The headlamp cluster remains the same size but a darker cover gives a subtle, more distinguished front end. At the rear a restyled bumper gives the impression of a wider, lower car. The rear lamp cluster now features a new arrangement of lights, but retains its original shape. The three-door 1 Series features the same styling cues but its side view is naturally different. The passenger doors are longer than those on the five-door model and are also frameless in the style of a coupé. Inside, customers can choose between either a four-seat or a five-seat configuration. In the four-seat arrangement rear passengers are separated by a central storage compartment and sit in more sculptured seats. It's easy to get a little carried away with the 1 Series. Does it really do a great deal more than the 3 Series Compact did, albeit with five doors and a sassier suit? In short, no, but the concept has evolved very nicely and the unsung hero of the process is the 118d.
