The award-winning twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre diesel engine has been brought to the BMW X5 range to cater for a growing demand for performance SAVs. The BMW X5 3.0sd provides the driver with 286hp and a flat torque curve with a peak of 580Nm from a lowly 1,750rpm to ensure rapid performance. The X5 3.0sd is capable of accelerating from zero to 62mph in 7.0 seconds before going on to a top speed of 146mph. Model / Price OTR / Power Hp / Torque Nm / Zero – 62mph Seconds / Top Speed Mph / Combined Mpg BMW X5 3.0sd SE £42,630 286 580 7.0 146 34.4 BMW X5 3.0sd M Sport £47,6755 The drivetrain in the BMW X5 3.0sd is unique in its segment as it utilises two differently sized turbochargers operating in sequential stages depending on driver inputs. The key to the engine’s smooth power delivery is that, despite the mechanics of two turbochargers providing variable power, they deliver a consistent 2.85bar pressure to the intercooler at all times. One smaller turbocharger provides near instantaneous power at low engine speeds, while a larger turbocharger provides the mid to top end power. The boost of both turbochargers is a regulated by an ECU and three control valves. This arrangement ensures optimum performance delivery from just above idle speed through to the red line and makes for impressive performance figures and an absence of turbo lag. Power in the X5 3.0sd is transmitted to the road via a standard six-speed automatic gearbox and Send through Y!M E-mail this BMW X5 3.0 sd Photos BMW’s renowned xDrive four-wheel-drive system. Complementing xDrive technology is the use of Dynamic Stability Control + including Dynamic Traction Control. DSC+ is the most advanced stability control system currently available on a production car and comes with four additional features above and beyond the original DSC system. DSC+ adds Hill-start assistant, Brake pre-tensioning, Brake fade compensation and Brake drying. Dynamic Traction Control, when engaged, allows for a degree of wheel slip to permit forward motion on slippery surfaces such as ice and snow. It also allows the keener driver to revel in the handling characteristics of the X5 without the DSC+ interrupting the flow unless the situation becomes critical. Diesel power accounts for more than 90 per cent of X5 sales in the UK and the new X5 3.0sd is being introduced to satisfy the wishes of some existing X5 owners who asked for an even greater level of performance. To cope with this the X5 3.0sd features uprated brakes compared to a standard 3.0d and comes fitted with thicker and larger diameter disc brakes for greater retardation. For a subtle and discreet visual differentiation between the two diesel X5 models the 3.0sd also has a chrome kidney grille with titanium vertical slats. The BMW X5 3.0sd is on sale now and costs £42,630 OTR for SE versions and £47,675 OTR for the M Sport. The announcement of the X5 3.0sd coincides with the news that the M Sport trim level is now available on the rest of the BMW X5 range. Launched initially on the 4.8-litre car only, M Sport allows customers to further personalise their vehicle. Standard M Sport equipment includes 19-inch light alloy M V-spoke wheels, M Aerodynamic bodystyling, M leather steering wheel, Sports suspension, Sports seats, Nevada leather upholstery, Anthracite headlining and Brushed Aluminium interior trim. The BMW X5 3.0si M Sport costs £44,690 OTR while the X5 3.0d M Sport costs £45,265 OTR. The BMW X5 4.8i M Sport tops the range and costs £53,440 OTR. And sporting BMWs brilliant 282bhp twin-turboed diesel engine, it can show a clean pair of heels to many respectable sports cars… First we had Multi-Purpose and Multi-Activity Vehicles. Then we had Sport Utility Vehicles. Now there are SAVs or Sports Activity Vehicles. The BMW X3 and X5 four-wheel drive models are prime examples of what the SAV sector is all about: brand and model desirability and must-have style and presence. Everything, in fact, that makes them the vehicles of choice for Mr and Mrs Wellheeled. In Cheltenham, my nearest largest town, you will see many Georgian houses with an X3 and an X5 parked in the same driveway all the personal transport of financial and industry executives, physicians, dentists, lawyers and their respective wives and partners. They have no real need of a 4x4, but their lifestyle and 'peer pressure' make them must-have vehicles that fit in with their family requirements and their affluent social and business image. Travelling to polo or towing a horse-trailer or boat all respectable urban lifestyle activities is assuredly the domain of the BMW X series. By comparison, deep in the working countryside, their Cotswold neighbours seem more than happy to stick with more traditional 4x4s from Land Rover or Jeep. Since its launch in 2004, UK sales of the X3 have continued to grow and are now just under 8,000 units per year a few more than the larger X5, but then customers are eagerly awaiting the new X5 model. The UK accounts for 8 per cent of all X3s sold in Europe, making it the second largest market after Germany. The X3 2.0d model accounts for two thirds of UK X3 sales and the sales split between male and female X3 customers in the UK is an 'equal opportunities' 50:50. When the X3 was first launched by BMW, it didn't seem to make much sense. Principally because it was pretty close in size to the X5, which was also a five-seater. However, with the introduction in April this year of the new and very much larger seven-seat X5, the recently revised X3 now has a better 'fit' in the BMW X range. Precisely as BMW intended. The X3 is roomy enough for five adults and although it is pricey £28,560 for the cheapest 2.0d diesel model right up to £38,175 for the top of the range 3.0sd diesel M Sport variant it will be more affordable and more company car tax-friendly than its new big brother. The X3 has five engine options, all six cylinder units. There are two petrol engines (2.5 and 3.0-litres) and three diesel units 2.0-litre, 3.0-litre 218hp and 3.0-litre 282bhp. The most recent specification changes include the introduction of new 3.0-litre petrol and diesel engines. Depending on the model chosen, the transmission can either be manual or automatic. But all models benefit from BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system. Specification levels are SE and M Sport and are available for all engine sizes. The latest X3 features subtle changes to the interior and exterior. At the front, a larger kidney grille sits above a redesigned front bumper and spoiler and the front foglights are now incorporated into the main section of the bodywork. The X3 3.0sd also rides on bespoke 18-inch light alloy wheels as standard. The side profile remains true to the original X3, but the new rear light clusters feature 'rods' of LED lights. The styling of the rear bodywork has also changed, with colour-coded panels now extending lower down the bodywork. Inside, the driver benefits from a new style of three-spoke steering wheel while enhanced materials used on the centre console have been included. Again, the owner of an X3 3.0sd gets special treatment with stainless steel foot pedals to confirm the nature of this high-performance variant. But the best news is that the new X3 features the latest version of the twin-turbo 3.0-litre diesel engine first showcased on the BMW 535d. Now with an output of 282bhp, this unique engine represents the pinnacle of BMW diesel engine development. Such power propels the X3 3.0sd into the realm of sports car acceleration courtesy of a zero to 62mph time of 6.6 seconds and a 149mph top speed. For such a powerful unit, fuel economy is good. Officially the average is 32.5mpg and my test vehicle returned 29.1mpg overall. Touring and city driving figures are, respectively, 39.2 and 25mpg. What specifically sets the X3 3.0sd apart from previous X3s is the twin-turbo technology. By using two turbochargers one smaller and one larger the X3 3.0sd offers high levels of low-down pulling power as well as top-end performance. This is down to a smaller turbo that boosts power at low revs for instant, smooth and swift acceleration. Then as engine speed builds, the larger turbocharger comes into play to continue the rapid progress. The result is an engine that develops impressive peak torque of 428lb ft from just 1,750rpm through to 2,250rpm, but is capable of continuing to rev up to 4,400rpm an unusually high figure for a diesel. And to make the best of it, the X3 3.0sd comes as standard with a six-speed Steptronic automatic gearbox. Aiding performance and safety is BMW's latest stability control system which in the X3 is allied to xDrive BMW's unique four-wheel-drive system. xDrive comprises two key functions: an electrically-activated multiple-plate clutch which changes drive distribution from axle-to-axle, and the Dynamic Stability Control+ system that regulates power to each wheel. Responding in just 100 milliseconds, xDrive reacts more quickly than more conventional four-wheel-drive systems. The 'intelligence' of xDrive comes from the DSC+ stability control system, which delivers vehicle data, including individual wheel speed, steering angle, lateral acceleration and yaw rates. By constantly processing this information, xDrive is able to detect situations in which traction loss is likely and, in an instant, transfer drive to the specific wheels with the most traction. DSC+ can intervene but, because of xDrive's ability to re-direct power and prevent traction loss, interventions are far less frequent and only happen in extreme circumstances. Where traction loss is unavoidable, DSC+ cuts power and, if necessary, applies brakes to individual wheels, allowing the car to regain a foothold but not necessarily reining-in progress. And because xDrive predicts a loss of traction rather than reacting to it the X3 can use the intelligently distributed power and drive to negotiate off-road terrain or to maximise enthusiastic on-road driving. For the first time on an 'X' model, BMW's innovative Dynamic Stability Control+ comes fitted as standard. DSC+ on the X3 brings with it four additional features aimed at improving safety. These are brake pre-tensioning (that shortens stopping distances), brake drying (where the pads are applied periodically to clear water), hill start assist and brake fade compensation. My test X3 the range-topping 3.0sd M Sport only accounts for around 5 per cent of X3 sales and, according to BMW, they are mostly driven by men. This twin-turbo high-torque engine, coupled with the xDrive traction system and a brilliant chassis, proves the X3 to be more of an elevated sports car than a conventional 4x4. Yes, it does cope with off-road conditions such as grassy fields and farm tracks. But on the road its BMW performance pedigree is most impressive. In the wet, mud and snow it gives real grip and in the dry it just improves road-holding for high-speed motoring. The Sport suspension is not the most comfortable and the ride can be unsettled, but the grip it gives is most reassuring. Bodyroll, unavoidable in most MPVs and 4x4s, is virtually non-existent, so the X3 handles like a sports car. All thanks to the technology involved, although at the core of it is the wonderful new twin-turboed, 3.0-litre, six-cylinder, 24-valve direct injection diesel engine. It is quiet, smooth and fantastically responsive. Another great new powerplant from BMW. As you would expect for the money, the standard specification is of the highest level, although there is a long list of extra cost 'goodies' for owners wanting the ultimate X3. In addition to its £38,175 on-the-road price, my test car had over £3,500 worth of extras. The add-ons included brushed aluminium interior trim, leather upholstery, satellite navigation and communications package and side air bags for the rear passengers. The X3 is roomy, well able to accommodate five passengers and their luggage. However, the bulky transmission tunnel in the rear seating section does restrict legroom for the middle rear seat passenger. Admittedly the BMW 'brand image' doesn't come cheap. But then it will hold its price better than most. Ride comfort is on the firm side and you either like the styling of new BMWs or you don't. Major plus points include the amazingly good diesel engine, roomy cabin, excellent road holding and a 2,000kg towing capacity. If you want a sports activity vehicle that really does handle, steer and go like a proper sports car and which has seating for five and you can afford it this X3 is undoubtedly the perfect choice. Expert Rating: The BMW X3 didn't get off to the brightest start but if any vehicle deserves a second chance it's this one. Andy Enright takes a look at the 3.0sd diesel modelIf you've got the money, BMW has built what is, as far as I can see, as close to the one-size-fits-all vehicle as it's possible to get. Imagine something fast, which handles well, which can get itself out of a sticky spot, which is big on the inside but not unwieldy to park, which is well built, good looking and which will hold onto its value tenaciously. Despite doing this, the vehicle in question won't even make it to many people's shortlists. The BMW X3 3.0sd is playing to a very tough crowd.If BMW was guilty of anything when launching the original X3, it was perhaps of being a little opaque in their product planning. The backstory is that they were planning to move the X5 significantly upmarket and needed to pull the X3 upmarket too in order to fill the void. While the all-new X5 was still being finalised, the X3 suddenly looked poor value for money, despite being bigger on the inside than its big brother. Most didn't appreciate these subtleties and simply saw the X3 as a more plasticky model that was priced too closely to the more prestigious X5. BMW was in a no-win situation. Believe it or not, the Z3 Roadster is the reason why. When they introduced the Z3, the first cars imported were the entry-level 1.9-litre models after which the Z3 garnered an undeserved reputation as a hairdresser's car. Anxious to avoid this tag with the X3, BMW brought in powerful 2.5 and 3.0-litre models first, only for the press to moan that it was too expensive and priced too closely to the X5. They won't be moaning when they get their paws on the X3 3.0sd. Here's why. For start, the X3 3.0sd is packing one of the finest engines in series production. The 286bhp 3.0-litre twin turbo diesel engine gives this unassuming looking compact 4x4 some gargantuan clout. Borrowed from the 535d, this engine will slingshot the car to 60mph in just 6.3 seconds and on to a top speed of 149mph. With a combined economy figure of 36.2mpg thanks to BMW's EfficientDynamics technology, it's not as if you'll pay the penalty at the pumps either. A clue as to the potency of this engine comes when the torque figure is revealed. Packing 580Nm of torque, the X3 3.0sd has muscles the size of a Porsche 911 Turbo. Grip off the line is excellent, the all-wheel drive system shuttling torque to whichever set of wheels can most easily handle it. Run-flat tyres ensure that you won't be left stranded by the roadside in the event of a puncture and also mean that you don't need to waste space and energy carrying a spare. Forget about all the hype about run-flats and poor ride quality. BMW has finally got the hang of tuning the suspension to handle the sidewall stiffness of the tyres."The X3 3.0sd kicks like a mule when you prod the accelerator"So we have a car that's quick enough to make a Porsche Cayman sing for its supper but which is more economical than a Honda Accord 2.4 and offers passenger space that isn't far off Range Rover proportions. Still in the anti brigade? Along with the crackerjack engine, BMW has also tweaked the X3's styling, giving it a more upmarket look. The old X3 looked fine when specified in M-Sport trim with the body coloured side panelling but rather cheap with black parts, especially if the body was trimmed in a pale colour. The latest car reduces the size of the black side panels to mere running strips and a colour-keyed front spoiler sits below a redesigned bumper assembly. A bigger kidney grille reflects BMW's pride in the latest X3 and front foglights are now incorporated into the main section of the bodywork. Move round to the back and there are rod LED tail lamps. The X3 3.0sd also gets 18-inch alloy wheels and twin exhausts that poke out beneath a ground hugging rear valance. Don't be tempted to go off-roading. The interior, the source of much of the X3's reputation for being built down to a price, has also been treated to a nip and tuck. The materials used on the centre console have been uprated and there's a better looking three-spoke steering wheel on offer. The 3.0sd gets stainless steel foot pedals, underlining its sporty credentials. Now that much of the technology that was introduced on the 5 Series has matured, BMW has been able to take a look at what's worth sticking with, what features will die a quiet death and, at the same time, has also introduced a few new ideas on the X3. The Dynamic Stability Control + system (DSC+) is fitted to an X model for the first time, giving X3 drivers immense confidence as they explore the outer reaches of the car's handling envelope and acting as a reassuring safety net in the event of an evasive or emergency manoeuvre. The braking system has been given the most attention and the X3 comes with a series of braking functions that are beyond the ken of many cars costing three times as much. Brake Drying scrubs away the film of water on the brake discs that can reduce stopping power, while Brake Pretensioning shortens stopping distances during an emergency stop by priming the brakes to remove any slop in the system should the driver come sharply off the throttle pedal. Hill Start Assistant holds the brakes on a manual car until the driver can accelerate away while Brake Fade Compensation ramps up calliper pressure if the system detects that heat build up is causing brake fade. Switchable Dynamic Traction Control is also another first for an X model. This sort of capability doesn't come cheap. You probably guessed at that already. The base price of this car, only available in ritzy M-Sport guise, is a hefty £37,255 but that's over £2,000 less than the equivalent 5 Series. Ask yourself what the 5 Series offers in terms of capability over the X3 and then reverse the question and suddenly the X3 3.0sd looks like money well spent.Facts At A Glance CAR: BMW X3 3.0sd PRICE: £37,255-£39,015- on the road INSURANCE GROUP: 18 CO2 EMISSIONS: 208g/km PERFORMANCE: 0-60mph 6.3s/ Max Speed 149mph FUEL CONSUMPTION: (combined) 36.2mpg STANDARD SAFETY FEATURES: Twin front, side and window airbags, ABS, DSC+, ESP, DTC WILL IT FIT IN YOUR GARAGE?: (length) 4565mm (width) 1,853mm (height) 1,674mm Build Comfort Depreciation Economy Equipment Handling Insurance Performance Styling Value Wednesday August 20 Send by Messenger Email this article Print ADVERTISEMENT if(window.yzq_d==null)window.yzq_d=new Object();

The only sound you will hear is the glorious response of the engine when you floor the throttle.The lowered sports suspension fitted on the M Sport version is on the firm side so the ride can get a bit bumpy over the humps and hollows that pass for roads these days.But the car is an able performer whether blasting down a motorway or threading its way through country lanes or the urban sprawl.Off-road the X3 is a competent performer without giving the impression it could lead an expedition up Everest.There are better cars in the mud out there - but as the majority of X3 customers will simply be looking for on-road excellence this isn't much of a hole in the car's armour.The exterior has earned some catty comments, but it presses all the right Beemer buttons with me, managing the trick of appearing sleek despite its 4x4 bulk.Step inside and the driver's seat is comfortable although adjustment for leg room is limited if you are on the tall side. What you do get is a panoramic view of the road with good visibility all round.There's plenty of space for passengers front and back and the boot is cavernous.But the transmission tunnel down the middle of the car does leave the feet of a third rear passenger a little squashed.One other bug-bear is rear seats that don't fold totally flat to allow the easy loading of awkward items.However, a glance at the dashboard and the German motoring maestro is back on song as classy soft-touch materials and a logical layout - with all dials and switches arranged in an uncluttered fashion - make life easy for the driver.The X3 is fitted with a host of electronic safety features to enable the beast to be halted with the minimum of fuss. There are also six airbags and side impact protection plus a tyre safety warning system.There's plenty of buttons to press and gadgets to use - as you would expect from a £38,000-plus car.Music is provided via a radio/CD player, climate control regulates the atmosphere while cruise control sets the speed.There are also foglights, parking sensors front and rear, plus automatic windscreen wipers and headlights.The M Sport specification adds 18-inch alloy wheels, leather gearlever, unique exterior trim, sports seats and three-spoke sports steering wheel.Personally I like the X3 despite its relatively expensive price-tag. It isn't so big that parking becomes a chore, while it has performance and handling characteristics that make it much more fun on the road than many of its contemporaries.FAST FACTSBMW X3 3.0sd M SportPrice: £38,565Mechanical: 286bhp, 2,993cc, 6cyl diesel engine driving all four wheels via 6spd automatic gearboxMax speed: 149mph0-62mph: 6.6 secsCombined mpg: 32.5Insurance group: 18CO2 emissions: 232g/kmBiK rating: 35%Warranty: 3yrs/ unlimited mileage, 3yrs paint, 12yrs anti-rust Words: Peter Keenan Keywords: bmw, x3 Rate this article: Login to rate this article...
