Welcome to my auction for a 1997 BMW 3 Series Convertible in excellent condition and with an extensive service history from new running from the original ...> bill of sale of £28,870, and even the original sales brochure and sales paperwork. All the keys are present, the car is totally original with full complete history all BMW in Hampshire to 56k, then same independent garage ever since. I purchased the car from a dealer in March this year who spent a lot of time and effort putting this car right, fixing many little jobs to present it to a retail standard. Firstly, the rhiostat (which is the resister for heater blower) was changed and that now works fine, rear wheel bearings were changed and the fuel guage was repaired. There was only one bit of rust on the car on the base of the aerial so that was ground out and repaired by a bodyshop, the alloy wheels were refurbished, then the car was machine polished and machine glazed to remove swirls, T cutted to remove any further contaminants, polished three times and then canumba waxed twice... the car was MOT`d in March this year, where a front suspension arm was replaced as well as the the oil and filter. The previous service carried out by the last keeper was around £900 at 103,000 miles, which was an inspection II service. Again, a full receipt is provided for this. In regards to the specification, the original build included; £378 - Samoa Blue Metallic Paint£1059 - Light Grey Leather£191 - Full Colour Coding£910 - Fully Electric Hood (no manual input required)£425 - Auto Dual Zone Air Conditioning£410 - 3g EWs Alarm ConvertSince I have owned the car I have had the airconditioning professionally re-gassed/serviced and it now blows perfectly cold. I also had a gasket changed on the exhaust as there was a little blow, and changed the aerial for the "bee sting" type, which looks a lot nicer. I did buy a set of GB number plates which I haven`t fitted yet but they will come with the car. The current plates fitted are original. The only reason for sale is that we found out recently that my wife is pregnant and I had the choice of selling the BMW or my motorbike - I love the car but I have had the bike years and that won!! The car is superb throughout and you will not be disappointed. The only jobs you may want to do with the car is change the stereo - the one fitted is an aftermarket and has an intermittent fault in that it sometimes drops the sound on one bank of speakers. I would recommend picking up an original BMW system, which can be found on eBay for around the £30 - £50 mark. I did consider doing this but thought it best to leave the decision to the new keeper. Finally, there is a small snag/hole in the leather on the back of one of the seats, which can be repaired for around £70... As stated full service history, most of note, replacement cylinder head from BMW at 56k miles in 2001 - the garage who serviced it for the last 7 years have really well maintaned the car and clearly no expense was spared. Exceptional condition throughout, hpi clear, ideal for an enthuisiast. It drives very nicely and is certianly a future classic... BMW M3 The BMW E30 was a compact executive car produced by BMW. It was the successor of the BMW E21 in 1982 and was replaced by the BMW E36 in 1990. BMW continued to produce the cabriolet (convertible) E30 well into 1993. The Touring remained in production until 1994 when the E36 touring replaced it. The M3 cabriolet was never officially offered for sale in North America; it was offered only for the European market.
The BMW M3 was first introduced on the E30 platform. A widened version of the E30 front suspension and the drivetrain from the E30 325i were used in the BMW Z1 roadster.
The E30 3-Series was produced in four body styles, a four door saloon, a two door saloon, a five door estate (marketed as the "touring"), and a two door convertible. A Baur cabrio was also available. The 325ix was produced from 1988 to 1991, and featured all-wheel drive. It was available as a two-door (coupé) or a four-door (sedan) and as touring. The BMW M3 utilised a widened and heavily redesigned and restyled variation of the 2 door body style. The M3 shares few parts with other E30 models, however many M3 parts can be used on the other body styles and are interchangeable offering the consumer an OEM "upgrade". These parts consist of control arms, control arm bushings, steering racks, etc.
The primary distinctive feature of the BMW E30 models produced for the North American market in 1984-1987 are the elongated front/rear aluminum bumpers. These bumpers are commonly known as "diving boards." In 1988, the anodized aluminum bumpers were shortened by revising the cover/fillers and shortening the shocks. In 1989 the aluminum bumpers were replaced with shorter body-color plastic bumpers.
The cars were powered by a range of inline 4 cylinder (BMW M10 , BMW M40 , & BMW M42) and inline 6 cylinder (BMW M20 and BMW M21) engines, with both petrol and diesel power. Torque output for the engines ranges from 140 N·m (100 lb·ft) torque for the 1.8 L (1766 cc) 4 cylinder engine, to 230 N·m (170 lb·ft) torque from the 2.7 L (2693 cc) 6 cylinder petrol engine. The E30 BMW M3 was fitted with a high-revving 4-cylinder engine (BMW S14) which produced 175 kW (238 PS; 235 hp) in its final European-only iteration.[citation needed] Contents 1 Engines

11 External links [edit] Engines BMW E30 325i Engine 1990–1991 BMW 318is (E30) 2-door sedan (Australia) A North American convertible with the distinctive 'diving board' aluminum bumper E30 Station Wagon, branded as the '3 Series Touring' Following on from the E21, the E30 was fitted with M10 straight-4 and M20 straight-6 engines. The 316 used a 1766 cc M10 fed by a carburetor and producing only 66 kW (90 PS; 89 hp), but this allowed BMW to offer a cheap, entry-level car in the range. The 318i had the same M10 engine, but with Jetronic fuel injection, pushing power to 77 kW (105 PS; 103 hp) and improving fuel economy. Finally, the 320i (2.0 L M20 with 92 kW (125 PS; 123 hp)) and 323i (2.3 L M20 with 105 kW (143 PS; 141 hp)) completed the range. Later, in 1985, a 2.5 L version of the M20 boosted the power of the top model to 125 kW (170 PS; 168 hp), replacing the old 323i. The 325ix (All Wheel Drive model) had a 2.5 liter M20 with 125 kW (170 PS; 168 hp) (same as the 325i).
Europe and North America received an economy version called the 325e (the e stands for the Greek letter eta, signifying efficiency). Strangely enough, the engine was the largest available in the chassis, aside from the rare South African version which was available with the 3.3 L M30. The 2.7 L had a longer stroke than the 2.5 L, with a more restrictive head, four cam bearings instead of seven (less internal friction), and softer valve springs. This resulted in 90 kW (122 PS; 121 hp). In 1987, the E30 was revised. The revision contained two significant changes in the engine department. First, the M20 straight-6 engines changed from Bosch Jetronic to Bosch Motronic. This boosted the 320i to 95 kW (129 PS; 127 hp) and the 325i to 126 kW (171 PS; 169 hp), all the while improving the economy. The M10 was replaced by the new, belt-driven cam M40 which also incorporated Motronic injection. The new 318i now had 85 kW (116 PS; 114 hp) and was noticeably smoother than the old version. A new engine had been developed, a chain-driven cam 4 cylinder M42 1.8 L DOHC 16 V engine creating the 318is in 1989. This is the most modern engine built to the E30 (this engine has been later used in early 318i E36s).
The 316 was replaced by a 316i, which used a 1600 cc version of the M40, producing 75 kW (102 PS; 101 hp). Not quite as torquey as the 66 kW (90 PS; 89 hp) 1766 cc M10 it replaced, it nevertheless offered superior performance. In some markets, like South Africa, the old M10-powered 316 continued a lot longer, gaining the new bumpers of the other models. In South Africa, The 316i was released in 1991.

In total, seven transmission were available for the various models of the E30: four manuals, and three automatics.
A 4-speed manual was available for the 316 and 318i (Getrag 220). The 316, 318i, and 320i also had the option of a common 5-speed manual (Getrag 240), while the 323i and 325i had a different manual (Getrag 260), and in addition, the 323i had a sports manual as an option(??). The transmissions for the 316 and 318i featured synchromesh on forward gears only, while the 320i and 323i, both with standard and sports transmissions, had synchromesh on reverse as well.
Both automatic transmissions were manufactured by ZF - they were the 3-speed 3 HP 22, which was available on the M10 316 and 318i models, and the 4-speed 4 HP 22, which was available on the 320i, 323i, 324td, 325, 325i and 325e models, as well as M40 and M42 316i and 318i.

The 316 and 318i shared a differential, as did the 320i and 323i, with the standard transmission. 323i models with sports transmissions had a different differential. In addition to the famous M3 there were other special models of the E30. For Portugal and Italy, due to their high engine taxes, a special model was created, the 320iS. This model was produced both in 2 and 4 door versions had a detuned version of the M3 engine. It was the same S14 engine but with 2.0l and 143 kW (192 hp). BMW South Africa's Motorsport division created the 333i in 1986 by fitting the 3210 ccm M30 "big six" ("M30B32" of the 733i E23/ 533i E12/ 533i E28/ 633CSi E24) engine to a 2-door E30. The resulting 333i was a major success in saloon car racing in that country and is now a collectors item. These cars, built with help from Alpina in Buchloe, Bavaria, Germany, featured some interesting compromises like forcing the buyer to choose between air conditioning (vital in South Africa) or power steering (because of lack of space due to the large M30 engine). They were only built in small numbers in 1986. BMW South Africa provided the following specifications for the 333i: Powerplant - M30B32 6 Cylinder 3210 cc 145 kW (197 PS; 194 hp) at 5500 rpm. 285 N·m (210 lb·ft) torque at 4300 rpm. The cars were fitted with a 5 speed manual gearbox and limited slip differential. Braking was enhanced by 296 mm (11.7 in) Alpina dual ventilated grooved front disc brakes. ABS was optional. The cars were fitted with J7x16 Alpina wheels and Pirelli P7 (195x50VR16)tyres. BMW provided performance figures were impressive, with a top speed of 228 km/h (142 mph). 0–100 km/h in 7.4 seconds, and a standing kilometer in 27.7 seconds at sea level. Approximately 210 of these cars were produced. The 333i was an all round "Pocket Rocket."
Later when it became clear that South Africa would not be getting the M3, the 325iS was created. Initially this was merely a 325i 2-door fitted with a bodykit and a close-ratio gearbox (improving acceleration at the expense of top speed and economy), but more changes were made to keep the car competitive in South African saloon car racing. Nevertheless, these cars were always sold to the public. This culminated in the 325iS Evo II of late 1991. By now several body panels were made of aluminum and the M20 engine grew to 2.7 L and now produced 155 kW (208 hp))and a 0-62 mph in a mere 7.5 seconds.
The cabriolet version continued to be built to the end of April 1993 and the touring version continued to be built to the end of February 1994.

A very popular modification to the E30 is the 24V engine found in the BMW E36 and BMW E34. The engines, M50/M52/S50/S52, can be installed with a selection of mainly BMW parts.

Another popular conversion is the M30 conversion, which entails sourcing a larger capacity "big six" engine from a 5 or 7 series of the same model generation. This conversion is more complicated than a 24 valve conversion, but offers good performance gains due to higher torque and hp figures from these larger capacity engines.

One of the features that added to the roominess of the E30 was the suspension. The front MacPherson struts and rear semi-trailing arm suspension were a compact arrangement that left a lot of cabin and trunk space for the car's overall size. The semi-trailing arms have been criticized for the dynamic toe & camber changes inherent to the suspension geometry, causing bump steer in hard cornering situations (such as racing and autocross).

The E30 was the first 3-Series car to be fitted with an onboard service indicator, consisting of an LED bargraph plus Inspection and Oil Service warning lights.

BMW released its E21 in the wake of the 1973 oil crisis, attracting customers seeking both prestige and economy, nearly doubling BMW's worldwide auto sales figures in three years, and winning numerous automotive world awards and honors.
Three decades later, the 3 Series is still the best-selling car in its class,[2] as commonplace in Asia, America and Australia as in Europe, and it has even outsold some cheaper models, such as the Ford Mondeo and Vauxhall Insignia in the UK.[citation needed]
The 3 series has also maintained BMW's racing heritage. The M version of the 3 series, M3, debuted in 1988.[3]

The E21 line was produced from May 2, 1975 (1977 in the USA) through 1983. Originally a replacement for the BMW 2002, the first 3-Series was a two-door saloon model only. A factory authorised cabrio version was also built by Baur. The series was superseded by the BMW E30 series.
The cockpit design of the E21 marked the introduction of a new design concept, with the center console angled towards the driver. This feature has become part of BMW’s interior design philosophy for many years. As a sign of passive safety, all edges and control elements within the interior were rounded off and padded.
At the E21's release, three models were available: with 316 (1.6 litre), 318 (1.8 litre) and 320 (2.0 litre) versions of the BMW M10 four cylinder engine. To draw clear visual distinction within the new model series, the 320 models came with dual headlights, while the 316 and 318 had single round headlights.
At the 1977 Frankfurt Motor Show, BMW unveiled its new variants of the E21, featuring the new six-cylinder M20 engines. The four cylinder 320 model was replaced with the 320/6, featuring a 2.0 litre version of the M20 engine. The 323i model was introduced, featuring 2.3 litres and 143 PS (105 kW; 141 hp). The braking system was also upgraded, with the 323i featuring disc brakes on all wheels.
For the 1979/80 model year, the four-cylinder models were upgraded: the 1.8 litre power unit was revised and entered the market as a 90 PS (66 kW; 89 hp) carburetor engine in the 316, while addition of Bosch K Jetronic fuel injection to the 1.8 litre engine raised the 318i to 105 PS (77 kW; 104 hp).
Since there was now also room for a new entry-level model, the 315 powered by a 75 PS (55 kW; 74 hp) 1.6 litre M10 engine made its appearance in 1981. [edit] E30, Second generation, 1982-1994 E30 Production

The E30 was sold from 1982 through 1991 in saloon form, through 1993 in convertible form. The E30's introductory price of US$18,210 was nearly double that of the E21 just 7 years earlier, but the availability of a six cylinder engine and 4-door body style (in 1984) earned sales. The torquey "eta" six in the 325e produced 121 hp (90 kW) and 172 lb·ft (233 N·m) of torque, but met the strict emission standards of the time. The E30 was the most powerful compact BMW offered in the United States since the 2002 Tii.
The lineup was joined in 1985 by the high-output 325i and 325is. Though the engine displacement was reduced to 2.5 L, output was up to 168 hp (125 kW) but torque dropped to 164 lb·ft (222 N·m) as the company focused on performance rather than economy. The rev limit for the new motor was raised from 5000 rpm to 6500 rpm.
The 325is was an upgrade from the standard 325i, as some new features were added to the car as standard. These included the full electrics package, black roof-liner, BMW "is" body kit, BMW 14 inch BBS "Basketweave" wheels and a Close Ratio gearbox. Other features also found on the 325is were options, however over time, some have been mistaken for standard features. These options include a 25% Limited Slip Differential (LSD), M Sport suspension with Bilstein struts, M-Sport II Steering wheel, BMW sports seats, leather interior, sunroof and BMW 15 inch BBS wheels. Options differed on vehicles produced in the United States.
In 1986 a left hand drive only all wheel drive version, the 325ix, joined the lineup with a touring version being introduced in late 1987. The four-cylinder 318 was dropped in 1985, but was brought back with a new, 1.8 L DOHC motor (M42B18) for 1991.
In the end of 1987, BMW introduced the touring version of the E30. It was very popular during its production up to 1994. It was available with a 1.6, 1.8, 2.0 or 2.5 litre engine and also 2.4 litre turbo diesel.
The most powerful American BMW E30 in 1989 came in the form of the M3. It used a 192 hp (143 kW) S14 straight-4 with a 4-valve head adapted from the M88 six and Bosch fuel injection. [edit] E36, Third generation, 1990-2000 E36 Production

The E36 BMW 3 Series is an entry-level luxury car / compact executive car. It was the successor to the BMW E30 and was eventually superseded by the BMW E46 starting in 1999 for saloons, and 2000 for coupes and cabriolets. The E36 was introduced during the 1990s.
The E36 experienced enormous success in the market. It laid strong foundations for the success that the BMW E46 experienced in subsequent years.
The E36 was sold from 1991 through 1999. It employed the "Z-axle" multilink suspension in the rear which had been proven in the Z1. VANOS variable valve timing was introduced on the DOHC L6 engines in 1993.
The four-door E36 was sold from Autumn, 1991, in the United States but the E30 2 door sedans were retained until well into 1992. The E36 convertible was delayed until 1994. The hatchback 318ti Compact was introduced in 1995 and was very popular in Europe, but it was not very successful in North America. The BMW Compact was identical to the regular E36 saloon from front bumper to A-Pillar. Everything else was unique, namely its rear semi-trailing arm suspension, based on the old E30, instead of the Z-Axle Multilink employed in all other E36's. The Z3 and M Coupe have similar rear suspension setups as well. The "Touring" estate was sold in Europe from 1995, but was not offered in the United States.

The E46 is the fourth generation of BMW's 3 Series entry-level luxury car / compact executive car. The saloon was introduced in 1998 and replaced the E36 saloon the same year. The initial inline-6 engines available were the 2.5 L 323 and 2.8 L 328 (the 323 badge did not match engine displacement but it was numbered as such to increase the spread between both models). The touring and coupé models appeared in 1999 with BMW's newly designed steptronic manumatic transmission, and the convertible and M3 later in 2000. The E46 Compact, a 3-door hatchback, was revealed in 2001 to be sold in European and Australian markets. xDrive all-wheel drive was introduced as an option in 2001. 2002 E46 saloon Facelift In 2000, the E46 lineup received an engine boost when the new M54 engines appeared for Model Year 2001 cars; with the new 3.0 L 330 replacing the 328, and the 2.5 L 325 replaced the 323. Outside of the engine and exhaust upgrades, there were few cosmetic changes, the most noticeable being the 330 receiving silver accents on the front fascia.
Also in 2000, the E46 lineup expanded to include the new (model year) 2001 M3 Coupe. The M3 only came in a coupe and convertible (model year 2002) platform, with either a 6 speed manual or SMG. Unlike its predecessor, the E46 M3 shared very few parts with the standard 3 series. The exteriors of the two cars only shared the doors, roof, and trunk. The exterior of the M3 had wider fenders and "M styled" bumpers, side skirts, mirrors, a protruding hood, spoiler, and the new tradition of M marked grills on the front fenders and four exhaust pipes. The interior of the M3 was accented with an M steering wheel, seats, rear view mirror, and instrument cluster.
The first major overhaul occurred when the E46 saloon underwent a facelift in 2002, which included re-designed headlights, new bumpers and a stiffer chassis. Also, the 316i,318i and 320i models received new, more powerful engines. Then in 2004 the coupe and convertible had a facelift which included new headlights, new front wings and bumpers, new selections in exterior colour, and redesigned sidemarker lights and LED tail lights. The M3s got a much more mild facelift that same year, with the inclusion of the updated boot and LED tail lights from the coupe/convertible.
Despite being introduced last, the E46 compact was the first to be replaced when the 1 Series was launched in September 2004. In mid-2005 the E46 saloons were phased out with the introduction of the new E90 saloons. The E46 touring was also replaced later that year with E91. The E46 remained in production as coupé, convertible and M3 until the E92 coupé and E93 convertible was revealed in late 2006. The new M3 coupé concept was later unveiled in March 2007 during Geneva Motor Show.
The E46 experienced enormous success in all markets and was widely considered the performance benchmark of its class. The record year for the E46 was 2002, when 561,249 vehicles were sold worldwide.[4]

BMW X3 Main article: BMW 3 Series (E90) 2009 BMW 328i sedan (Facelifted) (USA) The E90 is the currently available iteration. It debuted as a saloon (E90) and touring (E91) in March 2005 for the 2006 model year, while the coupé (E92) and retractable hardtop convertible (E93) went on sale in August 2006 for the 2007 model year.[citation needed] It is completely re-engineered from the E46, including changes to engines, transmission, the passenger compartment, suspension technology, as well as the addition of a host of high-tech features and options. The coupé/cabriolet body is now its own design and no longer derived from the sedan/wagon (unlike its predecessors), and is slightly longer and narrower with 2+2 seating compared to E90/91 which retains the rear three-passenger bench. A first for the 3 series is a retractable hardtop convertible (E93).
Currently, twelve engine options are offered, two being part of the new 'N' series of BMW inline engines featuring a host of new technologies. The N52 naturally-aspirated inline-6 engine (powering the 323i, 325i/xi, 328i/xi, and 330i/xi) features technological innovations such as lightweight magnesium/aluminum construction, electric water pump, Valvetronic (steplessly variable valve lift), and Double-VANOS steplessly variable valve timing contribute to produce a lighter and more powerful motor than its predecessor, but yield a 15% increase in fuel economy. The introduction of the N54 twin turbo inline-6 engine, which produces 306 PS (225 kW; 302 bhp) and 400 N·m (295 lb·ft) torque, marks BMW's return to turbocharging and is found in 335i/xi trims.
Major features include Comfort Access, HID Xenon adaptive headlamps, Active Cruise Control, and Active Steering.
Sales of the E90 have been very strong. In 2007, a record total of more than 58,000 vehicles were sold and it was the seventh most popular car in Britain.[5]
The saloon and touring (wagon) received more powerful engines in late 2006 for the 2007 model year, particularly the N54 twin turbo, the same engines available in the E92 coupé and E93 convertible that debuted at a similar time. The sedan and wagon got a mid-generational facelift for the 2009 model year which comprised changes to the grille, headlights, hood, taillights and trunk. In spring 2010, the refreshed coupé and convertible were released as 2011 models, with the 335i/xi receiving the new N55 single turbo I6 (with a "TwinPower" twin scroll turbocharger), and a sportier 335is with a tuned N54 engine and an optional 7-speed dual-clutch automated manual.

5-door liftback The next iteration of the BMW 3 Series is expected to arrive for the 2012 model year. Its exterior is influenced by the F01 7 Series and especially the F10 5 Series. The saloon, wagon, coupé, and convertible body styles will return. There is also expected to be a five-door hatchback version with a coupé-like style similar to the 5 Series Gran Turismo, and this will slot between the 3 Series wagon and the X3 crossover.
Technologies currently available in the 7 Series and 5 Series is expected to feature in the 2012 3 Series, such as a lane-departure warning system, night vision, a system to prevent the driver from falling asleep, and radar-based adaptive cruise control with collision-mitigating automatic braking.
The 2012 3 Series is expected to be powered by a new family of aluminum four-cylinder gasoline engines ranging from 135 to 220 horsepower. These will include new technologies such as variable intake- and exhaust-valve timing, sequential turbochargers, and direct fuel injection. The 220 hp four-cylinder may be included in US-bound models (the last four-cylinder 3 series was the 1999 318ti with a 138 hp engine).,[6] and the N54 3.0L twin turbo I6 may be replaced by a 2.0-liter sequential-turbo I4 engine with almost equivalent output. There will also be a hybrid version which augments the transmission with two electric motors and expected fuel savings of 20 percent, a similar powertrain that will be found in the upcoming X5 hybrid, developed in a joint venture with GM, Chrysler, and Daimler. The 3 Series has been on Car and Driver magazine's annual Ten Best list 20 times, from 1992 through 2011, making it the longest running entry in the list.[8] The E90 was named "Best New Sports Sedan" in the 2006 Canadian Car of the Year awards. Also, it was awarded the World Car of the Year at the New York Auto Show in 2006. What Car? also awarded the E90 2006 "Car of the Year". The E90 was also awarded Japan's Import Car of the Year for 2005-06. BMW emerged as the brand winner at the International Engine of the Year Awards for 2007 with its award in the 2.5 to 3.0 litre segment won by the 3.0 litre twin turbo engine, which is found in the BMW 335i.[9]

The E36 320d won the 24 Hours Nürburgring in 1998, after the M3 had won in the previous years.
The World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) is one of the FIA's three World Championships (along with Formula One and the World Rally Championship). Andy Priaulx and BMW Team UK won the ETCC in 2004, and continued the winning form in WTCC in 2005 in an E46 3-series, while the E90 3-series repeated this feat in 2006 and 2007. The 3-Series' rear-wheel drive layout and design have both been attributed[who?] to its victory, though in Touring Car Racing, as almost every other motor sport, the skill driver and their team tactics are also important.
The 3-Series cars in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) and other touring car championships have been penalized under racing rules for being rear-wheel drive and thus having better grip than its front-wheel drive competitors. For example, the 320si has been penalized in the WTCC in previous seasons in order to keep the sport competitive with the rest of the grid (Ford Focus, Chevrolet Lacetti, SEAT Leon, Alfa Romeo 156). Despite these ballast weight penalties, the 320si's of the British, German and Italian/Spanish teams continually win races and points.[citation needed] However, in the middle of the 2002 European Touring Car Championship (ETCC) season, FIA changed the handicap rules to add an extra 15 kg (33 lb) ballast to front-wheel drive cars (such as the Alfa Romeo 156) and the ballast in rear-wheel drive cars (including BMW) was reduced by 15 kilograms (33 lb).[10] Today, the WTCC series has a rolling start to eliminate the benefit of better grip that rear-wheel drive cars have from a standing start.[citation needed] Andy Priaulx's BMW 320si (E90) during the 2006 World Touring Car Championship season. The BMW 3-Series is currently used in both the SCCA Pro Racing Speed World Challenge Touring Car Series and the Grand American Road Racing Association Series. In the final 2006 Grand Am standings, BMW finished second in the manufacturer's standings in both the Grand Sport and Street Tuner classes, while E46 BMWs prepared by Turner Motorsport won the driver's and team championships.[citation needed]

The car I am currently interested in is a 1993 BMW 318is. It is in excellent condition (but I will have it checked out by a mechanic) and has an array of "extras" that make it highly attractive to me. I'm a little worried by the fact that it IS still 13 years old and has considerable mileage... but am wondering if the fact that it is a BMW would mean that it still has quite a ways to go before it quits (if it has been and will be well-maintained?). The asking price is $4000. Also, is the cost of maintaing a BMW (and this particular model/year) really much more than maintaining a newer/more common/domestic/etc. car? The e36 318 is going to be fairly reliable, it will not be a honda or toyota, but then you will actually enjoy driving the BMW. The car doesn't have the level of electronics that newer bimmers have so you won't have too many problems with that. The car will require more maintenance than an average Japanese car. The 1.9 ltr in the 318 was a little underpowered for the e36 chassis. This will get a little annoying especially if its an automatic. When you get a couple people in it and the air conditioning on, it is not going to get you anywhere fast. If you could find a 325, I would probably recomend doing that.If you find a good independent mechanic, and a good parts source, basic maintenance won't be that expensive on the car. What will be expensive is major repairs. If you need an engine or trans rebuild be ready for a large bill. Like you said it is a 13 year old car. Depending on where you live, climate etc. you may find small parts that will need replacing, and that can get expensive.You said the car has "extras", what exactly does it have? How much mileage does it have? venom2g2 New User | Posts: 1 | Joined: 07/06 Posted: 07/22/06 10:37 AM i bought a 93 318is and regret it. i paid $3,000 for it and the interior is completely gone. door panels fell off, and wires are hanging from the sun roof switch. recently i bought some replacement parts like a center console but most of the replacement parts like door panels are impossible to find. First month i had it some tube popped while geting an oil change and the damage cost me $500 due to the awkard location of the problem even though the tube was like 20 bucks to replace. It had 18' rims on it but it kept throwing the balance and alignment off so after about 9 months i ran through and balded up a brand new set of $480 tires, car couldn't really handle the size and weight of the rims. It hasn't really technically broken down on me but still the little problems are expensive problems with bmw's. I'm actually trying to get rid of mine for like $1,800 after only a year of having it.
