But it is easy to forget that when it comes to carrying loads, a traditional estate is hard to beat. But it is easy to forget that when it comes to carrying loads, a traditional estate is hard to beat. Take BMW's 3-Series Touring as an example. The compact executive wagon has a loyal following, thanks to an upmarket reputation. However, previous models were never the biggest in class and lacked innovation - so how does the new one shape up? Taking its inspiration from the larger 5-Series Touring, the 3 has a high roofline, short overhangs and a wheelbase that's 35mm longer than before. It is an elegant shape that certainly looks more exciting than the previous incarnation. But what about load space? As with its saloon brother, the Touring is longer, wider and taller than its predecessor, which means more room for passengers and luggage. With the rear seats in place, there is 460 litres of stowage space, up 25 litres from before. Folding flat the standard-fit 60:40 bench creates a maximum capacity of 1,385 litres - up 40 litres. Only the Jaguar X-Type can beat the Touring's all-out lugging ability, topping the BMW's maximum stowage by 30 litres. It is clear that a lot of thought has gone into making the Touring as usable and as accessible as possible. The tailgate now has an opening rear window, complete with a plastic luggage bay cover that automatically rolls back when the glass flips up. Inside, a standard cargo net and lots of lashing points mean the boot can even be partitioned up to the roof, while a low bumper line helps loading. What's more, there are plenty of hooks for bags, as well as holders for an umbrella and a two-litre water bottle. But the Touring's cleverest feature is its hidden luggage compartment. As the 3-Series is designed to use run-flat rubber, there is no spare wheel, so this ΂£160 option makes use of the space that would otherwise be filled by a tyre. It incorporates a partitioned well and a watertight fold-out box, big enough for a pair of muddy boots. There is also a plastic sheet which protects the bumper from scratches while loading. A less practical optional extra - but one that's a bit more stylish - is the Panoramic roof. Essentially a sunroof that extends over the passenger seats, it will cost around ΂£800. Potential buyers will be reassured to find the Touring drives just as well as the saloon, and our 320d test car displayed the same excellent handling, superb refinement and gutsy acceleration. Also carried over is BMW's new braking system - which, among other features, keeps moisture off the discs in the wet to improve stopping distances. We have few complaints, the main one focusing on the iDrive control centre, which, despite being simplified for the 3-Series, still remains confusing. Together with the 325i, the 320d will go on sale in September, while the 320i, 330i and 330d variants arrive the following month. The 318i and 318d models are scheduled to appear in 2006 at the earliest. Priced at ΂£25,570, the 320d SE is around ΂£900 more expensive than the machine it replaces. But you can see where the money has been spent; not only is the BMW more spacious and practical, it is also safer and better equipped. Together with residual values that are likely to be class leading, the new 3-Series Touring is one of the best all-rounders on the market. And it has done exactly that. Bigger, more usable and with some very clever features, the new Touring builds on the attributes of the saloon - such as the involving driving experience and excellent engine range - and is probably the best junior executive estate available. Request Brochure Test Drive Best Deals Although a wider range of engines will be available by the end of the year, the BMW 3-Series Touring goes on sale on September 17 with a choice of just two - a six-cylinder 2.5-litre petrol unit and the four-cylinder two-litre turbo diesel tested here. I recently drove both models at a press event in Aberdeenshire, but I've chosen the diesel because in every respect it seems to me to be the better car. The details of this new estate range were covered by Alan Douglas in his launch report, but here's a quick rundown. While the 3-Series Touring may be marginally lighter than the model it replaces (though with a 25% stiffer bodyshell), it is also significantly larger. This has allowed BMW to increase the amount of room available both for rear passengers - a point of criticism with the previous Touring - and for luggage. Cargo volume is now 460 litres with the 60/40 split rear seats in place, 1385 litres with them down. In addition, the Touring has a lot of standard equipment designed to make it function more effectively as an estate car. Following the example of rival manufacturers, BMW has arranged for the tailgate to open in two ways; you can lift the whole assembly, or just the window section. If you do the latter, and have pulled the retractable luggage cover into place, the cover springs out of the way ("using technology carried over from Ronnie Barker's cash till in Open All Hours," as BMW explains in a rare piece of whimsy). If you open the whole tailgate, it doesn't, so you can load the compartment from behind rather than above unless you want to remove the cover manually. All very neat and useful. Fastening straps, lashing points, a 12v power socket, a range of storage nets and a reversible floor (carpet on one side, washable plastic on the other) are also supplied as part of the basic package. A Luggage Compartment package, which includes a variable-partition system in the spare wheel well, is a £160 option. Years ago there used to be a marked difference in the driving characteristics of any saloon car and its estate equivalent. Manufacturers are better these days at establishing a compromise between handling and load-carrying prowess, but the Touring takes this to a new level. It is a wonderful car to drive, with excellent steering and an apparently limitless ability to accept as much power as you ask the diesel engine to throw at it. The ride quality is superb too, at least in the car tested here. A comparison with the 325i Touring did the petrol car no favours at all - although it felt sharper, it was also troubled to a far greater extent by the bumpier road surfaces on the test route. Perhaps the different spring rates required to carry the heavier diesel engine work to the 320d's advantage, and even if that's not the case there is an obvious contributory cause at each corner of the two cars. Both, you see, were in SE trim, which is the entry level for most 3-Series Tourings but one up from the more basic ES in the case of the cars with two-litre engines. For the extra £1030 above ES, the 320d SE gets an alternative design of 16" alloy wheels, automatic air-conditioning, cruise control, a multifunction steering wheel and rear Park Distance Control. The 325i SE adds a braking function to the cruise control, and more significantly it also uses larger, 17" wheels with lower-profile tyres. Ultimate handling improves (though you might be hard pushed to notice it in normal road conditions); ride quality and, I think, the overall driving experience deteriorate. The 325i is also a lot more powerful (218bhp) and quicker (7.2 seconds rather than 8.6 for the 0-62mph run), but you have to push it very hard in order to notice this. The massively greater mid-range performance of the 320d makes it feel like the faster car on the road. The 325i sounds better, of course, but even here the 320d is impressive, since the interior noise is remarkably well subdued. Different story for anyone standing outside, of course, but that's not your problem when you're behind the wheel. We look forward to driving more 3-Series Tourings as they are introduced, but in the meantime the 320d already looks like a very appealing choice. Report this review I have got a BMW 320d on a 02 plate 60k miles and just spent '£450 on inlet manifold change as a preventive measure because if a swirlflap drops of in gets sucked through your turbo and goes straight into your engine and can scrap your engine even if you service regularly and with full service history from BMW. Report this review As a high mileage driver (my daily commute is 50 miles each way) I needed a car that would be reliable, frugal, and quick. My last car was a 320d SE saloon, and my major gripe with it was the boot space, I simply couldn't fit awkward shaped things into it. The BMW 320d SE Touring solves this problem by having seats that fold flat, which gives you a large storage area. The back seats are split 70/30 to allow you to just fold down one side, which gives you more options. The SE gives you re ...
