What Car? says 4 out of 5 stars Not the biggest estate, but if you like the saloon and need a little more space, the 3 Series Touring is ideal. What Car? says:4 stars out of 5 Read review Buyer's notes Target Price team says: Any 3 Series Touring makes a good buy, but some are better than others. If you regularly travel with a full load of passengers and luggage, then the diesels are the best bet. Our favourite is the 320d, which has plenty of pull but still delivers almost 60mpg on the combined cycle. Low emissions make it a good choice for business drivers, too, as benefit-in-kind tax bills will be low. The bigger diesels offer even more muscle, but at a price. Most of the petrol models are refined and swift, although the 318i won’t be as happy as the others with a heavily loaded boot. The larger engines will hit you with high fuel costs, although to be fair most 3 Series are more economical than similarly priced rivals. Inclusive servicing packages are available, which will help make budgeting easier, and will improve resale values, since they can be transferred to subsequent owners. But it is easy to forget that when it comes to carrying loads, a traditional estate is hard to beat. Auto Express Car Reviews By Sam HardyJuly 2005 Off-roaders and people carriers are all the rage for those who want a practical vehicle these days. But it is easy to forget that when it comes to carrying loads, a traditional estate is hard to beat. Take BMW's 3-Series Touring as an example. The compact executive wagon has a loyal following, thanks to an upmarket reputation. However, previous models were never the biggest in class and lacked innovation - so how does the new one shape up? Taking its inspiration from the larger 5-Series Touring, the 3 has a high roofline, short overhangs and a wheelbase that's 35mm longer than before. It is an elegant shape that certainly looks more exciting than the previous incarnation. But what about load space? As with its saloon brother, the Touring is longer, wider and taller than its predecessor, which means more room for passengers and luggage. With the rear seats in place, there is 460 litres of stowage space, up 25 litres from before. Folding flat the standard-fit 60:40 bench creates a maximum capacity of 1,385 litres - up 40 litres. Only the Jaguar X-Type can beat the Touring's all-out lugging ability, topping the BMW's maximum stowage by 30 litres. It is clear that a lot of thought has gone into making the Touring as usable and as accessible as possible. The tailgate now has an opening rear window, complete with a plastic luggage bay cover that automatically rolls back when the glass flips up. Inside, a standard cargo net and lots of lashing points mean the boot can even be partitioned up to the roof, while a low bumper line helps loading. What's more, there are plenty of hooks for bags, as well as holders for an umbrella and a two-litre water bottle. But the Touring's cleverest feature is its hidden luggage compartment. As the 3-Series is designed to use run-flat rubber, there is no spare wheel, so this ΂£160 option makes use of the space that would otherwise be filled by a tyre. It incorporates a partitioned well and a watertight fold-out box, big enough for a pair of muddy boots. There is also a plastic sheet which protects the bumper from scratches while loading. A less practical optional extra - but one that's a bit more stylish - is the Panoramic roof. Essentially a sunroof that extends over the passenger seats, it will cost around ΂£800. Potential buyers will be reassured to find the Touring drives just as well as the saloon, and our 320d test car displayed the same excellent handling, superb refinement and gutsy acceleration. Also carried over is BMW's new braking system - which, among other features, keeps moisture off the discs in the wet to improve stopping distances. We have few complaints, the main one focusing on the iDrive control centre, which, despite being simplified for the 3-Series, still remains confusing. Together with the 325i, the 320d will go on sale in September, while the 320i, 330i and 330d variants arrive the following month. The 318i and 318d models are scheduled to appear in 2006 at the earliest. Priced at ΂£25,570, the 320d SE is around ΂£900 more expensive than the machine it replaces. But you can see where the money has been spent; not only is the BMW more spacious and practical, it is also safer and better equipped. Together with residual values that are likely to be class leading, the new 3-Series Touring is one of the best all-rounders on the market. And it has done exactly that. Bigger, more usable and with some very clever features, the new Touring builds on the attributes of the saloon - such as the involving driving experience and excellent engine range - and is probably the best junior executive estate available. AT A GLANCE It may be larger, but the 3-Series Touring is 15kg lighter than its predecessor, and it's full of clever features. These include the under-floor storage area in the boot (right) and an optional electric tow hook which extends at the touch of a button. In previous models, the Touring tended to be better for journeys to the squash club than to Waitrose. True, you can still buy more estate car space for your money, but not among the BMW’s natural rivals. Mercedes’ C-class and Audi’s A4 estates now can’t match the BMW for loadspace, a remarkable change in the hierarchy. A few weeks ago we road-tested the 325i SE Touring. It had a slightly disappointing low-speed ride but the handling was every bit as good as the saloon’s and it looked better. But at £26,905 it seemed pricey, especially considering the sparse standard equipment. Cue the 320i. If performance isn’t right at the top of your priority list, this new 2.0-litre version makes a lot of sense. The 1995cc four-cylinder engine, made at BMW’s Hams Hall engine plant in Oxfordshire, pumps out 150bhp at 6200rpm and 147lb ft of torque at 3600rpm. Top speed of 137mph is only 8mph down on the 325i’s figure. The 0-62mph time is 2.0sec slower – and that’s pretty noticeable – but a 9.4sec time is still brisk enough for most drivers. Better still, the smaller-engined Touring manages a clear 10mpg fuel consumption advantage (37.2mpg combined for the 325i; 27.5 for the 325i). What’s more, losing two cylinders has more effect on the sound than the refinement. The new four-cylinder engine is smooth and quiet, even when revved hard. It comes with a standard six-speed manual ’box with a six-speed Steptronic auto as a £1490 option. Starting price for the base 320i ES Touring is £23,040, though the £24,070 SE is a better choice as it includes climate control and a multifunction steering wheel. Now you can tell the Joneses you own a 3-series Touring for its image, style, handling – and its practicality. Reviewer Jonathan Goddard Review Date 10 February 2007 Manufacturer BMW Price as reviewed £28,455 Latest price compare Our score Full Review Tweet I own a 1989 BMW 320i Touring. I love it, despite its foibles. Sitting at the helm somehow makes you feel that little bit special. Sitting in the cabin of the latest 3 Series Touring gives me more of the same. It’s great how BMW has a sense of heritage that you rarely see these days; there’s a definite evolution here, from the familiar dash layout and dials to the ergonomics of the switchgear, that automatically lets a 3 Series owner know where they are. The Touring is definitely the best looking version of the new 3 Series. The overall impression of the saloon-style version isn’t great: it’s dull and it just looks plain wrong from certain angles, especially around the headlights and rear quarters. The coupé looks OK, but the convertible is bizarre. The Touring, however, makes all the strange lines work very well, unless you opt for a white paint job, which makes it look, well, Essex. The M Sport version, which the Lint had on test, has a nice bodykit, chunky alloys and the subtle M-Tech badges, styling hints and detailing that make the sportier BMW models look even better. You do pay a premium, though, which pushes the Touring up near the £30k mark if you want leather as well. Along the door sills and dotted around the interior, the M badges serve to heighten the pleasure of sitting inside a new 3 Series. For anyone who’s been inside one of the newer Bimmers, nothing will come as a surprise. It’s slabby, functional and undersated. But with the quality materials BMW chooses, it’s extremely smart. The orange dash lights remain hideous, unfortunately, and I’m beginning to think I should write a letter demanding BMW provide owners the option of choosing their own display lighting colour. I’d go for puce. The lack of automatic seat controls as standard is a right pain the arse – literally. No matter how hard the wife and I tried, we couldn’t get comfortable. The leather is great but the seats are a tad on the hard side, too. The brilliantly tiny steering wheel on the M Sport version really makes you appreciate how well the Touring handles – it’s point and shoot all the way in and out of the corners. But with the harsh ride and rock hard tyres, road manners do go somewhat AWOL at times, usually just after you’ve set off and the rubber is cold. You lose confidence in a car that feels like it’s always searching out the flattest piece of tarmac when all you want to do is just drive in a straight line. A rather leaden, vague clutch is right pain in the ankle. The gearbox, like on most modern BMWs, is wonderful but without a better clutch it’s a major annoyance. And the situation isn’t helped by the lack of grunt the 2.0 diesel provides. There’s just no urgency off the mark and higher up the power band, it’s a similar story for motorway overtaking. It does feel lively on the twisty stuff, thankfully. It’s still worth looking at the petrol alternatives in the range, especially as diesel doesn’t offer particularly strong economy. Verdict If you’re a 3 Series Touring fan, then there’s no real reason you won’t like the latest version because most of the current problems are echoed throughout the car’s past. No matter who you are, you will feel special in one, but you’ll also question the price tag. Sure, it’s a quality machine but you can get more space, more power and possibly more fun for less elsewhere – the Honda Accord Tourer, or the Skoda Octavia Estate, perhaps. In the meantime, I’ll happily potter about in my old 320i. It’s a classic, after all. Will be people be saying that about the latest Touring in 18 years’ time? I doubt it.
