Reply to this message | Report message as offensive | Link Tue 4 Nov 2003 20:18 BMW 325TD - Sooty Tailpipes These require/d a 5000mile service interval, quite short for busy people to have forgotten over the years. The waterpumps have plastic impellers which come off leading to sudden overheating and possible further damage. On high mileage manual cars, the crankshaft front bearing can gain excessive play. They were somewhat benchmark diesel engines in their hayday, and are still very good, but if anything does go wrong, they are quite expensive and complex. Reply to this message | Report message as offensive | Link Wed 5 Nov 2003 09:30 BMW 325TD - CM I had a P-reg 325tds manual Not quite sure where this 5000 mile service interval comes from. I went by the service indicator and serviced at about 10-12000 miles. I had from new and had to sadly change for something bigger at 88k miles. Apart from needing a MAF sensor nothing went wrong with the car. I really enjoyed driving it and would recommend it to anyone, although I am not sure about the td (non-inter-cooled engine). Personally I wouldn't bother with a td but would go for the tds. (I think that 1997 P 325tds has traction control as standard). I used to get about 34mpg doing my usual commute between Alton/London. I am sure that with more areful driving that 40 should be achievable. I seem to remember that the urban/extra figure quoted was about 38mpg To be honest it was not the most fuel efficient car in the world but then considering that it had a straight 6 it isn't too bad and when compared to a 325i it was about 30%+ better Reply to this message | Report message as offensive | Link Wed 5 Nov 2003 12:07 BMW 325TD - Sooty Tailpipes I have an Omega with the same engine, the service intervals are 5000 miles, (there is no service indicator in this car) and it is on the Range Rover 2.5TS too. Maybe the extra weight of this car or exhaust gas recirculation on later models makes them require more oil changes. Reply to this message | Report message as offensive | Link Thu 6 Nov 2003 17:29 BMW 325TD - Dizzy {P} My "unless I'm very much mistaken" bit was just my way of trying not too sound pompous (I know, I know!) and I can assure you that both the 325TD and 325TDS were indirect injection. The difference was that the TDS was intercooled. I can't argue about the rate of sooting on that particular engine compared with other engines of the day, however an IDI engine will normally be dirtier than a common-rail DI engine and it was that comparison that I had in mind. BMW E36 325 TDS diesel as you can see from the pictures this bmw is not standerd, its had quite alot of work and time and money spent on it to get it to this form. here is the currunt spec: Engine & running gear - free flow air filter with hard pipe to turbo - straight through exhaust system (turbo back) - large front mount intercooler and samco pipes - oil catch tank - bailey dump valve been modified to work on a desiel - ecu chipped & remaped by chipped uk with boost upped to 18psi - serviced every 3k miles - mig diff - (designed for drifting) wheels and suspention - lowerd 60mm front and 40mm rear - 18" alloy wheels body styling - M3 rear lights - clear side repeters - clear front indicators - skirts and lower bumpers colour coded the body work its self is in quite good conditon for a 14yr old car, but it does have a few light dents and scratchs that have been touched up over the years and wheels have some curbing marks but every think works as it should. being the tds it has: - front and rear electric windows & electric sunroof - 18 button obc with built in imobilisa, mpg meter,out side temp,timer,speed warning ect ect - sun visors have light mirrors - full central locking - rear center arm rest with cup holders for those who are not to familer with the bmw diesel range there are 2x types of 325 desiels there is the TD witch came with 115bhp and no intercooler and not very tuneable and dont make a grate deal of money compaired to the 325 TDS witch came with 143bhp with a small intercooler with a larger turbo and electronic fueling TDI and its these ones that seem to hold there value although most of them were auto but these manuals are around just not as easy to come across. dont be put off by the millage as these engines are good for over 230k and this on has loads of life left in it. there are some bad points as well to this car : bonnet badge is missing washer jets broken (but modified so work) bit of the lacque flaking bonnet few small rust bubbles on bottom corner of doors and front of bonnet. there is a upgrade stereo system in the car at the moment that will also be included - cd player/ amp/ subwoofer would like to make you aware for those intrested in this car with no knolage of drifting or tuned diesels - being a mig diff the rear wheels will skip when turning sharp at low speed as the rear wheels will be trying to turn at the same rate. being chipped - it will put extra diesel in on boost witch dont always burn off on idle so causes to run lumpy every now and then. also being a tunned and more fuel and air going in does cause more smoke on boost just wanted to make the winning bidder clear on this so there is no disopoint ment on collection. just had a new water pump fitted and new engine mounts & was serviced 1k ago £2800 ono cash on collection from kimpton (5min from luton) VEIWING WELCOME!! thought i would add this thread just incase any one is un-sure of its capablites: Anybody with Derv Drifting EXPERIENCE Last edited by kickingriffin; 01-05-2008 at 09:32. 18-04-2008, 10:59 #2 (permalink) srmotorsport given up now!! It was introduced in late 1990 (as a 1991 model) for Europe and in late 1991 (as a 1992 model) for US and Canada. It was the successor to the E30 3 Series and was eventually replaced by the E46 3 Series in 1998, though E36 coupes were still produced for the 1999 model year. The E36 experienced enormous success in the market. It laid strong foundations for the success that the BMW E46 experienced in subsequent years. Also known as the "dolphin shape", the E36 was sold from 1991 through 1999. All E36 saloons, coupes, and station wagons employed the "Z-axle" multilink suspension in the rear which had been proven in the Z1. The hatchback body style, known as the E36/5 or BMW Compact, was identical to the regular E36 from front bumper to A-pillar. In order to save space due to its truncated rear end, the Compact used a rear semi-trailing arm suspension based on the old E30 (also found in the Z3 and M Coupe), instead of the Z-Axle Multilink employed in all other E36's. In the United States, the four-door E36 were on sale by fall 1991, while the E30 coupes were retained until well into 1992 when they were replaced by E36 coupes. The E36 convertible was delayed until 1994. The hatchback body style, known as the BMW Compact, was introduced in 1995 starting with the 318ti, being very popular in Europe but largely unsuccessful in North America. The "Touring" station wagon was sold in Europe from 1995, but was not available in the United States. DOHC engines were used across the range (except in entry level models, see table below), with VANOS variable valve timing introduced in 1993. The 2.5 L M50B25 used in the 325i models was replaced in 1996 with the 2.8 L M52B28, creating the 328 line. Another 2.5 L I6 engine, the M52B25, was reintroduced for 1998 but badged as the 323i rather than 325i. This platform is often referred to as the E36/5. In the United States/Canada market the car was sold as the 318ti and was equipped with a 1.8L I4, 139 bhp (104 kW; 141 PS) M42B18 engine and was priced at USD23,000 in 1995. In 1996 the 1.8 liter engine was replaced with 1.9L M44B19 putting out 142 bhp (106 kW; 144 PS) and 133 ft·lbf (180 N·m) of torque. Ostensibly due to slow US sales of the E36/5 Compact, the E46 Compact was not sold in the United States. A modified version of the E36 platform designated as E36/7 was used for the BMW Z3 roadster in 1996-2002. The modification for the BMW Z3 Coupe was designated as E36/8. Even though the BMW factory was producing its own E36 convertibles, the Baur "Top Cabriolet" conversion was still available, possibly out of respect for the long association of the two firms.
