It has parking sensors on the rear, cruise control, fully working electric roof, electric seats, electric windows x 4, alloy wheels (in great condition!) full leather interior (rip and tear free), climate control with ice cold air con. Light power steering, remote central locking with 2 keys. Full book pack, BMW radio/cassette with 6 cd stacking system in the boot, steering wheel controls for stereo. Trip/fuel computer, this car gives me average 32miles to the gallon. It is dark blue metallic with blue roof. It really is a great car and a pleasure to drive. MOT til 02/03/2012 (will put full 12mths if buy it now). Just put 6 months TAX on it. The car has no mechanical or electrical faults, everything works as it should, and it drives superb. Only small detail that does need a mention is the passengers front wing - the wheel arch has just started to show a small bit of bubble rust,only on the edge, NOTHING too major I have been quoted £115 for brand new painted wing. I have taken this into account in the price. (this wing is advertised on ebay if you want to check!) The small amount of rust is only just noticeable, nothing too serious! car runs well for its age and the engine is as smooth as you would expect from a bmw. The mileage is 94000 but runs so well due to regular oil changes. The car has just completed a MOT without fault so it comes with a full years MOT and tax until end of sept 2012. I have recently had both steel brake lines and flexy lines replaced (not cheap) for peice of mind and have had the handbrake adjusted up so its all in good working order. The car comes with previous MOT`s and some service history.The only bad bits i can think of is that the CD changer does not work. I think the motor needs oiling as it doesn`t pick up the magazine but i have just put a tape with a adaptor for MP3 player in and use that. The radio works fine and all electrics are working properly including the rear windows and memory seats. The car also has a parrot blue tooth installed.I cant think of anything else to flag up so in summary its a good BMW for its age.No time wasters and cash on collection. Lovely full grey leather interior with very smart metallic blue/grey trim panels, this car has pretty much every extra and gadget on the order sheet and was well over 30 grand new, seats windows and mirrors all powered, air con, climate, traction and stability control, is all on board. If you’ve looked into these cars you will know that the 6 cylinder engine is brilliant with power to spare, and the handling is sublime. There are two areas on the front wheel arches that the paint has bubbled on, these are shown in the photos with a £1 coin for scale, other than this the bodywork is in great shape with nothing you would not expect to find on a car of this age and as you can see from the photo’s this does not detract from the look of the car. 18” msport wheels that were supplied from new so have signs of use but are straight and perfectly balanced with good rubber all round offside front is brand new for the mot. This is a beautiful car that I am only selling due to needing a four door car for the kids to hop in and out of (I make then take their shoes off to in this one, should be hearing from childline soon!)No scammers or overseas bidders please, cash on collection with a £50 deposit at the end of the auction via paypal please. Originally a replacement for the BMW 2002, the first 3-Series was a two-door saloon model only. A factory authorised cabrio version was also built by Baur. The series was superseded by the BMW E30 series. The cockpit design of the E21 marked the introduction of a new design concept, with the center console angled towards the driver. This feature has become part of BMW’s interior design philosophy for many years. As a sign of passive safety, all edges and control elements within the interior were rounded off and padded. At the E21's release, three models were available: with 316 (1.6 litre), 318 (1.8 litre) and 320 (2.0 litre) versions of the BMW M10 four cylinder engine. To draw clear visual distinction within the new model series, the 320 models came with dual headlights, while the 316 and 318 had single round headlights. At the 1977 Frankfurt Motor Show, BMW unveiled its new variants of the E21, featuring the new six-cylinder M20 engines. The four cylinder 320 model was replaced with the 320/6, featuring a 2.0 litre version of the M20 engine. The 323i model was introduced, featuring 2.3 litres and 143 PS (105 kW; 141 hp). The braking system was also upgraded, with the 323i featuring disc brakes on all wheels. For the 1979/80 model year, the four-cylinder models were upgraded: the 1.8 litre power unit was revised and entered the market as a 90 PS (66 kW; 89 hp) carburetor engine in the 316, while addition of Bosch K Jetronic fuel injection to the 1.8 litre engine raised the 318i to 105 PS (77 kW; 104 hp). Since there was now also room for a new entry-level model, the 315 powered by a 75 PS (55 kW; 74 hp) 1.6 litre M10 engine made its appearance in 1981. [edit] E30, Second generation, 1982-1994 E30 Production 1982–1994 Body style(s) 2-door sedan 2-door convertible 4-door saloon 5-door touring Layout Front engine, rear-wheel drive / All-wheel drive Related BMW M3 Main article: BMW 3 Series (E30) The E30 was sold from 1982 through 1991 in saloon form, through 1993 in convertible form. The E30's introductory price of US$18,210 was nearly double that of the E21 just 7 years earlier, but the availability of a six cylinder engine and 4-door body style (in 1984) earned sales. The torquey "eta" six in the 325e produced 121 hp (90 kW) and 172 lb·ft (233 N·m) of torque, but met the strict emission standards of the time. The E30 was the most powerful compact BMW offered in the United States since the 2002 Tii. The lineup was joined in 1985 by the high-output 325i and 325is. Though the engine displacement was reduced to 2.5 L, output was up to 168 hp (125 kW) but torque dropped to 164 lb·ft (222 N·m) as the company focused on performance rather than economy. The rev limit for the new motor was raised from 5000 rpm to 6500 rpm. The 325is was an upgrade from the standard 325i, as some new features were added to the car as standard. These included the full electrics package, black roof-liner, BMW "is" body kit, BMW 14 inch BBS "Basketweave" wheels and a Close Ratio gearbox. Other features also found on the 325is were options, however over time, some have been mistaken for standard features. These options include a 25% Limited Slip Differential (LSD), M Sport suspension with Bilstein struts, M-Sport II Steering wheel, BMW sports seats, leather interior, sunroof and BMW 15 inch BBS wheels. Options differed on vehicles produced in the United States. In 1986 a left hand drive only all wheel drive version, the 325ix, joined the lineup with a touring version being introduced in late 1987. The four-cylinder 318 was dropped in 1985, but was brought back with a new, 1.8 L DOHC motor (M42B18) for 1991. In the end of 1987, BMW introduced the touring version of the E30. It was very popular during its production up to 1994. It was available with a 1.6, 1.8, 2.0 or 2.5 litre engine and also 2.4 litre turbo diesel. The most powerful American BMW E30 in 1989 came in the form of the M3. It used a 192 hp (143 kW) S14 straight-4 with a 4-valve head adapted from the M88 six and Bosch fuel injection. [edit] E36, Third generation, 1990-2000 E36 Production 1990–1999 Body style(s) 2-door coupe 2-door convertible 4-door saloon 5-door touring Layout Front engine, rear-wheel drive Related BMW M3 BMW Z3 Main article: BMW 3 Series (E36) The E36 BMW 3 Series is an entry-level luxury car / compact executive car. It was the successor to the BMW E30 and was eventually superseded by the BMW E46 starting in 1999 for saloons, and 2000 for coupes and cabriolets. The E36 was introduced during the 1990s. The E36 experienced enormous success in the market. It laid strong foundations for the success that the BMW E46 experienced in subsequent years. The E36 was sold from 1991 through 1999. It employed the "Z-axle" multilink suspension in the rear which had been proven in the Z1. VANOS variable valve timing was introduced on the DOHC L6 engines in 1993. The four-door E36 was sold from Autumn, 1991, in the United States but the E30 2 door sedans were retained until well into 1992. The E36 convertible was delayed until 1994. The hatchback 318ti Compact was introduced in 1995 and was very popular in Europe, but it was not very successful in North America. The BMW Compact was identical to the regular E36 saloon from front bumper to A-Pillar. Everything else was unique, namely its rear semi-trailing arm suspension, based on the old E30, instead of the Z-Axle Multilink employed in all other E36's. The Z3 and M Coupe have similar rear suspension setups as well. The "Touring" estate was sold in Europe from 1995, but was not offered in the United States. The 2.5 L M50B25 used in the 325 models was replaced in 1996 with the 2.8 L M52B28, creating the 328i line. Another 2.5 L engine, the M52B25, was reintroduced in 1998 but the cars were sold as 323 rather than 325. [edit] E46, Fourth generation, 1998-2005 E46 Production 1999–2005 Body style(s) 2-door coupe 2-door convertible 4-door saloon 5-door touring Layout Front engine, rear-wheel drive / All-wheel drive Related BMW M3 BMW X3 Main article: BMW 3 Series (E46) The E46 is the fourth generation of BMW's 3 Series entry-level luxury car / compact executive car. The saloon was introduced in 1998 and replaced the E36 saloon the same year. The initial inline-6 engines available were the 2.5 L 323 and 2.8 L 328 (the 323 badge did not match engine displacement but it was numbered as such to increase the spread between both models). The touring and coupé models appeared in 1999 with BMW's newly designed steptronic manumatic transmission, and the convertible and M3 later in 2000. The E46 Compact, a 3-door hatchback, was revealed in 2001 to be sold in European and Australian markets. xDrive all-wheel drive was introduced as an option in 2001. 2002 E46 saloon Facelift In 2000, the E46 lineup received an engine boost when the new M54 engines appeared for Model Year 2001 cars; with the new 3.0 L 330 replacing the 328, and the 2.5 L 325 replaced the 323. Outside of the engine and exhaust upgrades, there were few cosmetic changes, the most noticeable being the 330 receiving silver accents on the front fascia. Also in 2000, the E46 lineup expanded to include the new (model year) 2001 M3 Coupe. The M3 only came in a coupe and convertible (model year 2002) platform, with either a 6 speed manual or SMG. Unlike its predecessor, the E46 M3 shared very few parts with the standard 3 series. The exteriors of the two cars only shared the doors, roof, and trunk. The exterior of the M3 had wider fenders and "M styled" bumpers, side skirts, mirrors, a protruding hood, spoiler, and the new tradition of M marked grills on the front fenders and four exhaust pipes. The interior of the M3 was accented with an M steering wheel, seats, rear view mirror, and instrument cluster. The first major overhaul occurred when the E46 saloon underwent a facelift in 2002, which included re-designed headlights, new bumpers and a stiffer chassis. Also, the 316i,318i and 320i models received new, more powerful engines. Then in 2004 the coupe and convertible had a facelift which included new headlights, new front wings and bumpers, new selections in exterior colour, and redesigned sidemarker lights and LED tail lights. The M3s got a much more mild facelift that same year, with the inclusion of the updated boot and LED tail lights from the coupe/convertible. Despite being introduced last, the E46 compact was the first to be replaced when the 1 Series was launched in September 2004. In mid-2005 the E46 saloons were phased out with the introduction of the new E90 saloons. The E46 touring was also replaced later that year with E91. The E46 remained in production as coupé, convertible and M3 until the E92 coupé and E93 convertible was revealed in late 2006. The new M3 coupé concept was later unveiled in March 2007 during Geneva Motor Show. The E46 experienced enormous success in all markets and was widely considered the performance benchmark of its class. The record year for the E46 was 2002, when 561,249 vehicles were sold worldwide.[4] As a credit to the E46 series, it was chosen for Car and Driver Magazine's "10 Best Cars" every year of its production. [edit] E90, Fifth generation, 2005-present E90/E91/E92/E93 Production 2005–present Body style(s) 2-door coupe 2-door convertible 4-door saloon 5-door touring Layout Front engine, rear-wheel drive / all-wheel drive Related BMW M3 BMW X3 Main article: BMW 3 Series (E90) 2009 BMW 328i sedan (Facelifted) (USA) The E90 is the currently available iteration. It debuted as a saloon (E90) and touring (E91) in March 2005 for the 2006 model year, while the coupé (E92) and retractable hardtop convertible (E93) went on sale in August 2006 for the 2007 model year.[citation needed] It is completely re-engineered from the E46, including changes to engines, transmission, the passenger compartment, suspension technology, as well as the addition of a host of high-tech features and options. The coupé/cabriolet body is now its own design and no longer derived from the sedan/wagon (unlike its predecessors), and is slightly longer and narrower with 2+2 seating compared to E90/91 which retains the rear three-passenger bench. A first for the 3 series is a retractable hardtop convertible (E93). Currently, twelve engine options are offered, two being part of the new 'N' series of BMW inline engines featuring a host of new technologies. The N52 naturally-aspirated inline-6 engine (powering the 323i, 325i/xi, 328i/xi, and 330i/xi) features technological innovations such as lightweight magnesium/aluminum construction, electric water pump, Valvetronic (steplessly variable valve lift), and Double-VANOS steplessly variable valve timing contribute to produce a lighter and more powerful motor than its predecessor, but yield a 15% increase in fuel economy. The introduction of the N54 twin turbo inline-6 engine, which produces 306 PS (225 kW; 302 bhp) and 400 N·m (295 lb·ft) torque, marks BMW's return to turbocharging and is found in 335i/xi trims. Major features include Comfort Access, HID Xenon adaptive headlamps, Active Cruise Control, and Active Steering. Sales of the E90 have been very strong. In 2007, a record total of more than 58,000 vehicles were sold and it was the seventh most popular car in Britain.[5] The saloon and touring (wagon) received more powerful engines in late 2006 for the 2007 model year, particularly the N54 twin turbo, the same engines available in the E92 coupé and E93 convertible that debuted at a similar time. The sedan and wagon got a mid-generational facelift for the 2009 model year which comprised changes to the grille, headlights, hood, taillights and trunk. In spring 2010, the refreshed coupé and convertible were released as 2011 models, with the 335i/xi receiving the new N55 single turbo I6 (with a "TwinPower" twin scroll turbocharger), and a sportier 335is with a tuned N54 engine and an optional 7-speed dual-clutch automated manual. [edit] F30, Sixth generation, 2012- Sixth generation F30 Production 2012- Body style(s) 2-door coupe 2-door convertible 4-door saloon 5-door touring 5-door liftback The next iteration of the BMW 3 Series is expected to arrive for the 2012 model year. Its exterior is influenced by the F01 7 Series and especially the F10 5 Series. The saloon, wagon, coupé, and convertible body styles will return. There is also expected to be a five-door hatchback version with a coupé-like style similar to the 5 Series Gran Turismo, and this will slot between the 3 Series wagon and the X3 crossover. Technologies currently available in the 7 Series and 5 Series is expected to feature in the 2012 3 Series, such as a lane-departure warning system, night vision, a system to prevent the driver from falling asleep, and radar-based adaptive cruise control with collision-mitigating automatic braking. The 2012 3 Series is expected to be powered by a new family of aluminum four-cylinder gasoline engines ranging from 135 to 220 horsepower. These will include new technologies such as variable intake- and exhaust-valve timing, sequential turbochargers, and direct fuel injection. The 220 hp four-cylinder may be included in US-bound models (the last four-cylinder 3 series was the 1999 318ti with a 138 hp engine).,[6] and the N54 3.0L twin turbo I6 may be replaced by a 2.0-liter sequential-turbo I4 engine with almost equivalent output. There will also be a hybrid version which augments the transmission with two electric motors and expected fuel savings of 20 percent, a similar powertrain that will be found in the upcoming X5 hybrid, developed in a joint venture with GM, Chrysler, and Daimler. [7] [edit] M version Main article: BMW M3 [edit] Awards and recognition The 3 Series has been on Car and Driver magazine's annual Ten Best list 20 times, from 1992 through 2011, making it the longest running entry in the list.[8] The E90 was named "Best New Sports Sedan" in the 2006 Canadian Car of the Year awards. Also, it was awarded the World Car of the Year at the New York Auto Show in 2006. What Car? also awarded the E90 2006 "Car of the Year". The E90 was also awarded Japan's Import Car of the Year for 2005-06. BMW emerged as the brand winner at the International Engine of the Year Awards for 2007 with its award in the 2.5 to 3.0 litre segment won by the 3.0 litre twin turbo engine, which is found in the BMW 335i.[9] [edit] Racing The E36 320d won the 24 Hours Nürburgring in 1998, after the M3 had won in the previous years. The World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) is one of the FIA's three World Championships (along with Formula One and the World Rally Championship). Andy Priaulx and BMW Team UK won the ETCC in 2004, and continued the winning form in WTCC in 2005 in an E46 3-series, while the E90 3-series repeated this feat in 2006 and 2007. The 3-Series' rear-wheel drive layout and design have both been attributed[who?] to its victory, though in Touring Car Racing, as almost every other motor sport, the skill driver and their team tactics are also important. The 3-Series cars in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) and other touring car championships have been penalized under racing rules for being rear-wheel drive and thus having better grip than its front-wheel drive competitors. For example, the 320si has been penalized in the WTCC in previous seasons in order to keep the sport competitive with the rest of the grid (Ford Focus, Chevrolet Lacetti, SEAT Leon, Alfa Romeo 156). Despite these ballast weight penalties, the 320si's of the British, German and Italian/Spanish teams continually win races and points.[citation needed] However, in the middle of the 2002 European Touring Car Championship (ETCC) season, FIA changed the handicap rules to add an extra 15 kg (33 lb) ballast to front-wheel drive cars (such as the Alfa Romeo 156) and the ballast in rear-wheel drive cars (including BMW) was reduced by 15 kilograms (33 lb).[10] Today, the WTCC series has a rolling start to eliminate the benefit of better grip that rear-wheel drive cars have from a standing start.[citation needed] Andy Priaulx's BMW 320si (E90) during the 2006 World Touring Car Championship season. The BMW 3-Series is currently used in both the SCCA Pro Racing Speed World Challenge Touring Car Series and the Grand American Road Racing Association Series. The E46 was released in 1998 to worldwide markets (excluding the United States) in the sedan body style. In 1999, a coupé and touring body style became available to all markets, and the sedan was released in the United States. A convertible and hatchback body style was released in 2000, the latter only for Europe, Australia and New Zealand. The E46 experienced enormous success in all markets and was widely considered the performance benchmark of its class.[4] The record selling year for the E46 chassis was 2002, when 561,249 vehicles were sold worldwide.[5] BMW M GmbH produced a high performance variant of the E46 chassis, designated the M3. This version had a larger, more powerful engine, sportier suspension, a limited slip differential, and various aesthetic modifications. The M3 was released in 2001 and was available only in the coupé and convertible body style. It was offered with two transmissions; a standard 6-speed manual, or an optional sequential manual gearbox. DesignworksUSA was contracted by BMW to work alongside BMW Group's in house design team to create the exterior body work.[6] Based on the E36 body shell, the design team put an emphasis on improving aerodynamics and increasing the car's aggressive stance.[6] [edit] Flexible electronics design Since the start of production the entire in-car entertainment system (Radio Function, Navigation System, Television and Telecommunications systems) is based on a very flexible automotive computer system.[7] As a result the E46 models can all be easily upgraded with the newest BMW technologies including BMW's Bluetooth System, the DVD based Navigation system, as well as BMW's CD changers that play MP3s[8] [edit] Powertrain and engine design An emphasis was put on reducing unsprung weight and increasing structural rigidity rather than increasing power output: the highest displacement model at release, the E46 328, had only 3 horsepower more than the E36 328.[9] To counter this small power increase, the body shell of the E46 was claimed by BMW to be 70% more rigid than the E36's,[9] and aluminum suspension components were used increasingly in order to decrease unsprung weight.[9] In tune with BMW's core values,[10] the E46 was released with a front engined rear-wheel drive layout with 50/50 weight distribution.[9][11] This balance allows for optimal handling in regards to the drive train layout. Along with the 316, the 318 received an updated engine in 2001: the 2.0 L BMW N42. It produced 143 hp (107 kW) and 200 N·m (148 ft·lbf).[18] The 318 was not released into the United States market.[9] [edit] 320 Sold in Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom, it was the base model the E46 lineup there, powered by a 2.2-litre inline six making 168 horsepower. It would be succeeded by the 323i (another Canada-only configuration) in the succeeding E90 lineup.[19] [edit] 323 The 323 was one of the first E46 models available for purchase, 1998 for the sedan (excluding North American markets) and 1999 for the coupe (and sedan in North American markets). It was powered by BMW's 2.5 L M52 engine designated M52TUB25.[18] The M52 engine was previously used in the E36; however, this 2.5 L version added dual VANOS, BMW's mechanically continuous variable valve timing system. This improved low end torque and fuel economy over the M52B25 used in the E36 323. The E46 323, despite having a 2.5L engine, was designated "323" and not "325", to increase the apparent spread between it and the correctly-numbered 328 to appeal to BMW enthusiasts. The 323 ended its run after 2000,[18] when it was then retired to make way for the updated E46 325. [edit] 328 The 328 was released alongside the 323 as a high-performance option, still using the BMW M52 engine. The E46 328 and 323 ended their production runs after three model years (1998–2000) when it was succeeded by the 330 and 325, respectively. [edit] 325 The 325 took over from the market position of the 323 and uses the same 2.5 L I6 engine, however the 325's engine has improved double-VANOS and fully dual pipe exhaust system. The European version makes 192 hp (143 kW), while the U.S./Canadian version had a catalytic converter installed which reduces the output to 184 hp (137 kW) . [edit] 330 The 330 succeeded the 328 as the top-performing E46 (excluding the M3), with the M54B30 making 231 PS (170 kW; 228 bhp) and 214 ft·lbf (290 N·m), while the performance package (ZHP) version had an output of 235 bhp (175 kW; 238 PS) and 222 ft·lbf (301 N·m). [edit] Trim levels [edit] United States market [edit] Premium package (ZPP) The premium package has been available on all 3-series cars. It consisted of a three spoke sports leather steering wheel and had improved grip over the standard "square" steering wheel. The car was also given sport seats which provided better bolstering and support than the stock seats. They also had adjustable thigh supports and were available in manual or power. The sports package also offered 17 inch wheels standard, which came with staggered lower profile tires. Sport suspension was also given, which offered improved handling by way of firmer springs, a lower ride height, and tighter dampers. It typically included: Pass-through ski bag Heated seats Headlight washers Fold down rear seats [edit] Performance package (ZHP) 2005 BMW 330Ci ZHP 2004 BMW 330CI Silver Grey Metallic The performance package was an option given to E46 sedans from 2003 to 2005 and coupes from 2004-2006.[20] It included various aesthetic changes over the regular 3 series, as well as functional and mechanical enhancements. It had M badges on each of its Style 135 wheels, with additional M badging on the multi-function steering wheel and atop the 6-speed short throw weighted shifter. In addition to the standard color options, the ZHP was available in the "Motorsport-only" colors Silverstone Grey, Mystic Blue and Imola Red. It received the "M-Tech II" bodykit standard, 18-inch staggered Style 135 wheels, high gloss anthracite window trim, and the coupe received clear turn signals (headlights, side-markers, and tail-lights) instead of the amber turn signals found on the standard 330Ci.[20] The interior had also been modified with half cloth-half alcantara sports seats (optional upgrade to leather), an alcantara-wrapped sports steering wheel (switched to perforated leather in mid-2005), a shorter M-badged shift knob, anthracite colored cloth headliner, and aluminum "cubed" faux-carbon fiber interior trim (available in silver or black). The instrument gauge cluster was also modified with red needles and polished metal trim rings.[21] In the performance department, the ZHP was equipped with the more aggressive BMW Performance camshafts and a DME tune to increase power from 225 hp (168 kW) to 235 hp (175 kW).[20] The engine redline was also raised from 6,500 rpm to 6,800 rpm to further take advantage of the new power band and higher power output achieved by the new camshafts at higher RPMs.[21] As a result of the higher redline, the nut that fastens the oil pump's sprocket came with threadlocker pre-applied from the factory to keep the nut from falling off.[22] The car also received a shorter final drive ratio which allows for faster acceleration; 3.07 vs. 2.93 for manuals and 3.64 vs. 3.38 for the automatic.[21] Car and Driver magazine track-tested the car, which returned a 0-60 mph time of 5.6 seconds and passed through the 1/4 mile in 14.3 seconds.[21] In 2003 the ZHP was the only non-M 3-series to feature a Getrag 6-speed manual transmission (the Steptronic automatic transmission was not available the first model year (2003), but it was offered from 2004-2006. Suspension was modified over the standard suspension with firmer springs and dampers, larger anti-roll bars, stronger front control arm ball joints, a lower ride height, and slightly more negative camber.[21] The Style 135 wheels also came equipped with the much stickier compound, Michelin Pilot Sport tires, in a staggered configuration with 225/40-18 tires in the front and 255/35-18 tires in the back.[21] [edit] Rest of world markets [edit] ES The ES trim level was the base level available for the European E46s from 2003. It included various safety features as standard equipment, such as anti-lock brakes, 6 airbags, dynamic stability control, and a factory installed alarm which were not common as standard features when the E46 was released.[23] Comfort items such as heated and electric mirrors were also fitted standard.[23] The ES trim did not include cruise control, a multi-function steering wheel (MFSW), leather steering wheel or gearknob, although these were offered as "at-cost" options.[23] [edit] SE The SE trim level included the options the ES trim level was given, but added cruise control as part of the multi-function steering wheel, headlight washers, parking sensors, leather steering wheel and gearknob.[23] It was the mid-range trim level that offered luxury items, but lacked the sporting items the M Sport and M Clubsport trim levels had, although the drivetrains of both SE and M Sport models were identical. [edit] Sport / M Sport The Sport (later M Sport) trim level included the options given on the ES and SE trim levels, but had additional performance-orientated items added. It came with the "M-tech" I or II bodykits (depending on when the car was ordered), half leather-half alcantara sports seats, sports suspension (comprising stiffer springs, dampers, and altered suspension geometry), gloss black external trim instead of the chrome trim of the SE, sports steering wheel and 17" lightweight style 68 alloy wheels.[23] The drivetrain of Sport / M-Sport models is identical to that of base / ES / SE variants. [edit] M Clubsport A 330Ci M Clubsport The M Clubsport trim level is aesthetically similar to the United States Performance Package.[23] The main difference is that the M Clubsport trim was not given the BMW performance camshafts that the ZHP obtained. Instead, it had 20 kilograms (44 lb) of sound deadening removed from the car. The M Clubsport trim shares the same suspension set up as the performance package (ZHP) in America, as well as the "cubed" interior trim and 18 inch style 135 wheels.[24] However, changes from the ZHP include plastic front splitters on the M-Tech II bumper, a M-tech II styled rear spoiler (instead of the M3 trunk lip), and clubsport door sills.[24] The M Clubsport also came with two "BMW Individual" colour options that were carried throughout the car, Estoril Blue and Velvet Blue.[24] Unlike the other trim levels, the M Clubsport trim was only available on the 330.[23] [edit] Luxury package This Canadian-only package offered the same options as the United States premium package. [edit] Model nomenclature [edit] "i" The "i" badging indicates that the car has a fuel injection engine (Petrol) which first appeared in the E21 & E30 models. [edit] "xi" With the introduction of the xi models in 2001, BMW brought back AWD which hadn't been an option in the 3-series since 1991 when the E30 325iX was discontinued. BMW produced the 325xi and 330xi in the US between 2001–2005, but only in Sedan (4-door) trim. The AWD models were well received by reviewers for giving customers in severe winter climates the option of an AWD 3-series. At the same time, the xi was criticized for its added weight, slower acceleration, decreased gas mileage, softer suspension, and poor original equipment tires.[25][26] The transfer case used in all BMW E46 xi models is manufactured by New Venture Gear, Inc., which is owned by Magna Powertrain. The NV 124 transfer case used in the E46 xi models is a full-time four-wheel-drive gear driven transfer case.[27] The xi models have a permanent front/rear 38:62 torque split which differs from the E46's successor, the E9X, which incorporated BMW's new xDrive platform. Both the front and rear differentials in the E46 xi are open differentials which are aided by DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) to control wheel spin and oversteer/understeer. The xi models were only produced in left-hand drive, and as such were not sold in RHD markets such as the United Kingdom. [edit] "d" The "d" indicates that the car has a diesel powered engine. [edit] SULEV BMW introduced a super ultra low emission vehicle (SULEV) into the select regions of the United States to meet stricter emission standards. The BMW M3 CSL (coupe sports lightweight)[29] was a limited edition version of the M3, with 1,400 cars being produced for its 2004 model year run.[30] The CSL was never released into the North American market,[31] and was only available in two colours - Silver Grey Metallic and Black Sapphire Metallic.[32] As its name suggests, an emphasis was put on reducing weight. The M3 CSL has a kerb weight of 1,385 kg (3,050 lb), 110 kg (240 lb) lighter than the regular M3.[33][34][35] The CSL features many weight saving technologies taken from Formula One racing applications.[36] A large proportion of the M3's sound insulation has been removed, as have the power windows, electric seats, and navigation systems.[31] Air conditioning and stereo systems could be retrofitted free of cost, but were not available standard.[34] The CSL's unique body pieces are all crafted from carbon fiber reinforced polymer.[33] Glass-reinforced plastics are used throughout structural points in the car.[34] The rear glass window was replaced with lightweight plastic.[34] Although the CSL loses a considerable amount of kerb weight from its original version, the focus was put on strategically reducing or moving the weight in the car rather than the raw amount of weight that could be lost.[37] This is to retain the ideal 50:50 weight distribution characteristics the E46 has.[33] For example, the roof is constructed from carbon fiber reinforced plastic.[33] While this only reduces the kerb weight of the car by 7 kg (15 lb), it lowers the center of gravity of the car and decreases body flex.[32][37] A black M3 E46 CSL. In order to improve the handling ability of the car, the entire suspension system was further refined.[33] Specially developed racing springs and dampers are given to the CSL, and a tightened steering ratio (14.5:1 vs 15.4:1 on the regular M3) improves responsiveness.[36] The braking system is also modified, with larger front and rear floating rotors and calipers from the E39 M5.[31][32] The CSL is given a retuned dynamic stability control system with a "M track mode" setting that allows the car to be pushed to its absolute limits before being activated.[36] The 3.2l engine used in the M3, the BMW S54, has been modified to increased output by 17 hp (13 kW) and 5 N·m (1 lbf) over the European M3.[32][36] This is achieved through a high flow carbon fiber air intake, modified valve and camshaft timing, and a retuned DME.[32][36] However, the engine is further modified in order to reduce weight - it features a lightweight exhaust manifold and thinner exhaust piping.[36] Additionally, the intake and exhaust manifolds are slightly straightened to improve engine responsiveness.[31] The CSL also has various aesthetic modifications over the standard M3. It received an aerodynamic lightweight body kit which included carbon fiber front splitters that improved downforce at high speeds by 50%,[33] as well as a carbon fiber rear diffuser. The front bumper has a distinct hole that is used to draw cool air into the newly designed air intake.[33] The boot lid is redesigned to incorporate a raised lip, unlike the standard M3 where one is simply added on to a flat boot.[33] The CSL was sold with distinct 19 inch lightweight forged BBS alloy rims that came with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup semi-slick racing tires.[32][38] The interior of the CSL is redesigned with a sporty-weight saving theme. The CSL obtains fiberglass front racing bucket seats,[33] and fiberglass backed rear seats.[33] The center console, door panels and trim, and headliner are all formed from carbon fiber,[32][33] and the steering wheel is redesigned with cruise control, stereo, and phone controls removed to include just a single button that activates the M track mode.[32] The SMG II drivelogic semi-automatic transmission is a Getrag 6-speed conventional manual transmission, but with an electrohydraulically actuated clutch pedal, similar to an Formula One style transmission.[32] The regular M3 has the manual transmission as standard and the SMG II automated manual as an option, however the CSL is only offered with the SMG II and that unit also received a more advanced drivelogic unit that was capable of making shifts in 0.08 of a second.[32][36] [edit] North American competition package (ZCP) As the M3 CSL was not available to the North American markets, BMW released an optional "competition package" (option code ZCP) to fill the market void. Report this review This is possibly the best car of 2002, its sleek, leather interior indulges you with luxury, everything is electric, even the door mirrors. The engine sound is amazing. The space in the boot is amazing and today, is great value for money and i still think it is better than the new, more frequent 3 series. It looks more luxurious and is more luxurious, and it looks very expensive and it was, but now it is'nt which is a shame. Personally thats my favourite BMW ever made, i have had the older 3 series... i think it was 1994 or something and that was great aswell. But i intend to send this car down the family as my son loves it to pieces and will have it when i retire and am unable to keep up with it. I love it so much!!!
