In just 6.0 seconds, the turbocharged six-cylinder engine propels the Coupé from zero to 100 km/h. Its top speed is 250 km/h. The BMW 325d reaches a top speed of 244 km/h at 150 kW (204 hp) and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds. Because, try as we might, we can't think of another occasion where a manufacturer has offered a model range with a choice of no fewer than five diesel engines, but that's exactly what the new variant takes the current-generation 3 Series's total to, the full oil-burning hierarchy now reading: 318d, 320d, 325d, 330d, 335d. Except it's all a really clever confidence trick. BMW actually only sells the 3 Series with two different diesel engines, only available in five different states of tune. The 318d and 320d both share the 1995cc four-cylinder motor, with the cheaper 18's unit slightly downtuned. Similarly, the 325d, 330d and 335d all use the same 2993cc straight six engine (although the 335d has two turbochargers instead of one) with the 325's relatively lean figures coming as the result of a slightly less brawny engine management computer.So is the whole thing nothing more than cynical marketing exercise? We'll give you to the end of the story to decide on that one, but the 325d can certainly raise a decent case for itself. For a start, it's £2400 cheaper than the equivalent spec 330d, which is a fairly substantial saving. And for a second, prior experience has long-since taught us that the less powerful diesel engines in a range are often the best prospects, offsetting their relative lack of thrust with better refinement and economy. Andy Enright explains whyThe BMW 3 Series diesel range is proliferating. The choice was once quite simple. You either chose a 320d (brisk) or a 330d (rapid). Nowadays, the latest facelifted range is a little more complicated. As well as the 318d (tepid) and 335d (ballistic), there's also now a 325d that packs a hefty 197bhp and might just quietly be the pick of the bunch.Not that you'd ever guess in terms of column inches generated. This is BMW's invisible 3 Series, the model that everybody overlooks. Compromise has never been a dirty word in Munich and the 3325d offers all the real-world performance most customers will ever need, all backed up with admirable fuel economy, laudable emissions and a price tag that merits further investigation. Offered in both four-door saloon and five-door Touring guises, you're likely to be paying close to £30,000 or more once you've ordered and specced up your 325d. As usual, there's a premium of around £1,200, model-for-model, if you go for the `Touring' estate version. The 325d sits virtually equidistant between the 177bhp 320d the 231bhp 330d models in terms of price and, offering 20bhp more than the 320d and 34bhp less than the 330d, it splits them fairly neatly in terms of power output too. With 197bhp and a hefty 400Nm of torque at its disposal - as much pulling power as the old V8 BMW M5 - this is a car that asks whether you really need to splash out extra on more engine that you'll rarely if ever require. Yes, more of everything is always fun but when you're footing the bill, you've got to strike a balance and the 325d is an extremely well-judged balance point. It will accelerate to 60mph in a mere 7.4 seconds and keep going to a top speed of 146mph. The best part is that despite this punchy performance potential, you'll still be able to average over 47mpg with a measured right boot. Company car drivers will also warm to the 325d as it offers emissions pegged at just 153g/km in saloon guise. "The 325d could well be the surprise package of the 3 Series diesel line up"The 2.5-litre six-cylinder engine offers the sort of smoothness you'd expect from one of BMW's latest generation diesel engines with a broad spread of torque meaning that you won't need to continually shift gears to keep it on the boil. Like all E90 3 Series models, the balance of weighting between the steering and the slick six-speed gearchange, together with the effort required to depress the various pedals, is all beautifully judged. The spacing between those pedals, the driving position and the sightlines out of the cabin all lend the belief that the 325d was screwed together by a manufacturer who deeply appreciates the finer aspects of building a car. Drive other rivals and you'll see how quickly they drop the ball in these apparently fundamental regards. The starting process is slightly convoluted, and involves slotting the plastic key unit into the dashboard and then pressing a starter button to fire up the diesel unit. After the first couple of times you do it, the process seems a bit of an unnecessary work up, but the rewards are well worth it. The engine's torque comes in long, smooth streams and the engine disguises its turbocharged roots very well, feeling like a bigger normally aspirated unit to drive. The thing that really impresses is how much work has gone into making the car feel suitably premium. Unusually for a 3 Series, it could be that what's on the bonnet gains as much attention as what's under it where this revised model is concerned. The styling of today's car has been updated in a number of small ways but the raised lines that fall down the middle of the bonnet are most noticeable. Elsewhere, the BMW trademark ringed side lights are standard and the grille has been tweaked while the entire rear light clusters are now entirely ruby red in colour and the side skirts have a more pronounced crease line. The interior looks largely similar to the previous model but BMW has again updated its iDrive control interface with scrolling menu displays designed to enhance usability. There's 8 gigabytes of music storage capacity in the system too, enough for 100 albums, while the quality of the trim materials around the cabin has also been enhanced. The practical advantages of the Touring version over the saloon only really make themselves felt when there are less than four people in the car. You get a 460-litre void back there to fill with the paraphernalia of your choice and that doesn't compare at all favourably with the 460-litres you get in the saloon for £1,180 less. Fold the rear seats down, however, and the available space mushrooms up to 1,385 litres. Forget about taking garden rubbish to the council tip or shifting that chest of draws home from the furniture store, you could hold a wedding reception back there or have it converted into a squash court. All right, I exaggerate but you get the point: it's usefully big. The 3 Series Touring's 60:40 split-folding seats open up the possibility of seating a passenger in the back while still maximising the available loadspace and there are other practical features included in the package as well. Most notable is the split tailgate which opens up two different cargo access options by opening up in two sections. The 325d gets the job done unobtrusively and with a minimum of fuss. Beneath that veneer of ever so slightly boring efficiency, there lies a car that's absolutely astonishing in the way it offers performance, handling and economy in equally impressive measures. Some vehicles need to make a big fuss to get noticed. There must be millions of them by now. And what’s so special about this one? This is the 325d and it’s designed to plug the gap between the popular four-pot 320d (163bhp/250lb ft) and six-cylinder 330d (231bhp/368lb ft), itself now supplanted at the top of the diesel tree by the 286bhp/427lb ft 335d. Alpina’s answer to the same question is a hotted up 320d but BMW’s own solution is a detuned 330d. So the 325d gets a six-cylinder engine producing 197bhp and 295lb ft of twist. How does it drive? It’s great. Not a horizon-eater like the 335d obviously, but it’s still got that six-cylinder charm that’s missing from the 320d. And enough performance that you’re rarely left feeling shortchanged. The action starts at around 1200rpm and the switch between on- and off-boost is smoother than in the smaller-engined car. It’s pretty pointless to talk standing start figures in diesels which do all their best work in the mid range but against the clock the 325d hits 62mph in 7.4sec, the 320d in 8.3sec and the 330d, 6.7sec. Unsurprisingly, given that it’s essentially the same engine, the 44.1mpg two-five isn’t much less economical than the 330d (43.5mpg), but loses out significantly to the 50mpg 320d. Under hard load at low speeds you’re treated to a rich, bassy rumble but at motorway speeds the only sound is the noise of wind politely rushing past the A-pillars. The rest of the experience is stock 3-series: brilliant steering, good driving position, quick but slightly notchy gearchange and a smart cabin.
