Well, if you're anything like us it can only mean Porsche. Both the 911 and 968 Clubsport models were lighter and faster, with more than a pinch of RS about them. In terms of evoness, both were bouncing off the limiter. So when BMW applies the name to a lighter, sportier 330Ci you wouldn't be alone in expecting something special, not least because in light of the M3 CSL project getting the go-ahead, BMW can clearly see the merit in building driver-focussed models, even if they'll sell only in relatively small numbers. Consequently we were pretty excited about the 330Ci Clubsport's arrival, but when a brash-looking 3-series drove into the car park sporting a combination of purple, sorry Velvet Blue paintwork, fussy alloys and a clumsy rear wing we thought there must have been some mistake. The badge on the boot supported our theory, merely saying 330Ci, but on opening the driver's door the kickplate proudly wore the 'Clubsport' logo. Strange. Opening the info pack only served to compound our fears that far from being a pure driver's car, the Clubsport was merely a Coupe loaded with 'sporty' extras. Worthy of just one hastily inserted page, the sum total of the Clubsport's hardware changes are unique design 18-inch alloys, 15mm lower, stiffer sports suspension and the removal of 20kg of sound insulation to improve the aural quality of the engine. Cosmetically, there's the boot spoiler (aptly named), Clubsport door sills, sports seats trimmed in leather and Alcantara, and a shortened 'M' gear lever. Oh, and silver aluminium 'cubed' interior trim on the dash, intended, and I quote, 'to create a sense of supreme driving precision'. Dubious interior decor or not, let's not forget that the Clubsport is based on the thoroughly sound 330Ci. Supremely smooth and generating 231bhp, its 3-litre straight-six is lusty and laid-back, a complete contrast to the M3 motor's head-banging rev-frenzy, but more than enough to post a satisfyingly potent 0-62 time of 6.5sec and go on to hit the 155mph limiter. If those figures look familiar it's because they are: according to BMW's own figures the Clubsport is no faster than the standard Ci. The Clubsport's chassis modifications promise some additional edge, but attack a B-road with any conviction and you'll soon discover a frustrating lack of front-end bite. Second-gear corners and a 330 BMW usually means large amounts of fun, but in the Clubsport you're more likely to encounter understeer as the front is keen to push wide unless you really pitch it in. Even then the combination of those 18in rims and relative lack of power means M3-style powerslides are as likely as a Sven-Goran Eriksson smile. What's more the stiffer springs and dampers have harmed the low-speed ride without adding any precision to the high-speed handling. For a car we hoped would be a worthy junior to the M3, it's all a bit saloon-like. A bit woolly around the edges. If all this sounds negative, it is, but only because the Clubsport tag is a flagrant misnomer. With 'Sport' and 'SE' already applied to the 3-series, the Clubsport name has been plucked out of the ether by a product/brand/marketing team with little imagination and a tenuous grasp of the heritage and significance of certain names. As a result they have succeeded only in making hard-edged dynamic promises the refined, smooth 330Ci can't hope to deliver. Worse still, the suspension tweaks and cosmetic add-ons rob the 330Ci of its integrity. As if to underline the Clubsport's depressingly inevitable niche as rich man's 330 rather than a poor man's M3, this particular test car came fitted with, amongst other things, a full-leather interior, heated seats, two grand's worth of colour screen Sat/Nav and some rear side airbags. All of which bumps the price from the standard Clubsport's not inconsiderable ΂£31,740 to a whopping ΂£37,095. In case you're wondering that's just ΂£1500 shy of an M3. I rest my case. The 330Ci Clubsport Coupe Offers Keen Drivers A Definite Edge. Andy Enright ReportsWhat makes a good coupe? On the basis that it should be stunningly voluptuous, reassuringly impractical and smugly exclusive, the BMW 3 Series Coupe is something of a duffer. Just when saloon cars were being styled to resemble coupes, the profile of BMWs two-door wasnt dissimilar to the saloon. This despite the only common external parts being the door handles, the side indicators and the BMW badges. Never was so much changed by so many for such little benefit. Build Comfort Depreciation Economy Equipment Handling Insurance Performance Styling Value Although the lower order coupes suffer most from this staid design philosophy, the M3 models lowered stance, big wheels and aggressive spoilers serve to punch up the visual appeal to agreeable effect. The downside is that youll need £41,155 to lay claim to one. BMW recognised that a gulf existed in its range and that it was losing sales to more striking coupes such as the Audi TT and the Mercedes CLK. Taking the excellent 330Ci Coupe as raw material, BMW has produced a car with almost as much drama as the M3 at a price that will tempt many from the opposition. Although £33,465 is by no means inexpensive, it stacks up favourably against the CLK320, a car that it wallops on almost any dynamic measure you care to mention. No, its still not as pretty as the Stuttgarter, but its certainly got a swagger to it."If the M3 had never existed, wed be lauding the 330Ci Clubsport as the best drivers coupe available for halfway sensible money."The stance is more pugnacious, the sports suspension giving the Clubsport a purposeful absence of fresh air atop its low profile tyres. These wrap some suitably monstrous 18-inch double spoked alloy wheels. Theres a rear M spoiler and only the lack of chromed gills on the cars flanks will give the game away that this is not a genuine M3 to the casual observer. Three paint finishes are available, Titanium Silver, Velvet Blue and the hue thats becoming the trademark sporty BMW colour, Estoril Blue. BMW have worked hard inside too, stripping 20kgs of sound insulation from the bulkheads in order to fill the cabin with the sound of that magnificent 231bhp straight six engine. Yes, your power output is still closer to that of a VW Polo than the awesome M3, but at least youll have some Touring Car sound effects to perpetuate the fantasy. Thats not to say the Clubsport is in any way slow, but mere figures dont do justice to the creaminess of the throttle response, the flexibility of the engine nor the brilliant balancing of all the major controls. Over 90% of its torque is available from as low as 1,500rpm, making this far from a peaky screecher. With as much power as an eighties Porsche 911 Carrera to call upon, you know the Clubsports going to be no slouch and it doesnt disappoint. On the road, performance is predictably impressive, with rest to sixty occupying just 6.5s and a top speed electronically-limited to 155mph. Do you really need to travel faster than this? The trouble is, the £2,000 that the Clubsport adds to the 330Ci Sports sticker price hitches it that tempting bit closer to the price of the M3, probably the performance bargain of the sector. It seems hard to call a £41,155 a bargain, but when it does as much as a Porsche 911 which retails comfortably the other side of £50,000, it makes finding another £7,500 over the price of the Clubsport distinctly tempting. If the Clubsports price makes you hesitate, then console yourself with the news that equipment levels are superb: there's stability and traction control, multi-function sports steering wheel, cruise control, parking distance control, Isofix attachments for child seats, six (yes six) airbags, a remote-controlled alarm, air conditioning, a high quality stereo system integrated into the dash, plus of course ABS, electric windows and power steering. It that wasnt enough, the Clubsport adds leather and alcantara trimmed sports seats, a stubby M gear lever, a Clubsport etched door sill and an aluminium interior trim. It's not only about sheer speed however. This car flatters your driving without overtly doing so thanks to the DSCIII stability control and Cornering Brake Control (CBC). No matter how heavy your right foot, the DSC system will only give the rear wheels as much power as they can take without spinning, so every time that little light flashes, you're avoiding a lurid tail-happy slide. The cars electronics constantly monitor its pitch and yaw, making this 231bhp rear wheel drive powerhouse safer on a wet road than the Nissan Micra you learned to drive in. If despite all that, you still go too fast into a bend and do exactly the wrong thing (slam on the brakes), CBC will help you out, applying firmer braking to the outside front wheel as the car corners and hugely reducing the risk of a spin. Don't run away with the idea however, that all these electronics take from the driving experience on offer: this is still a great car to hustle along, though the sports suspension may make the ride a little too hard for some. The same goes for the steering, which keeps you perfectly in touch with the road surface - rather too in touch perhaps for those used to less responsive set-ups. Its something of an oddity, the 330Ci Clubsport. Yes, its far more desirable than the standard 330Ci Sport model, but the flip side of that coin is that its 82% of the price of an M3 with 67% of its power and half its bar room credibility. If the M3 had never existed, wed be lauding the 330Ci Clubsport as the best drivers coupe available for halfway sensible money. As it stands, its the second best and a distant second best at that. [report] [news]  Wednesday 28th July Few pictures of my new BMW 330ci Clubsport after a detail. Washed with two bucket method, Clay barred, Polished and then Waxed. I absolutely love the car, drives fantastic, smooth and quiet but when you want to press on it feels superb. The noise is fantastic!! I have had a hot hatch for 4 years so feels so nice to be back in a RWD car again. Ruskie Original Poster 540 posts 40 months [report] [news]  Wednesday 28th July Any thoughts on where to place newly purchased Pistonhead stickers? I was thinking either side near front wheels? JFReturns 634 posts 11 months [report] [news]  Thursday 29th July Left side of boot.Nice car, I've always liked these. Still not sure about those rear spoilers though.... Podie 31,067 posts 115 months [report] [news]  Thursday 29th July Nice. One of these in the station car park, with little carbon fibre extensions at the front - looks quite good. Not sure about the alloys TBH... bit too fussy for the clean lines of the car IMO. daveco 2,110 posts 47 months [report] [news]  Thursday 29th July Love the Clubsports, just that little bit more special (and lighter)Can you notice the 6 cylinder thrum much more than a normal Bimmer Ruskie? Not been in another 330 so difficult to compare the two. When the revs get above 5000rpm the engine sounds amazing! The wheels could do with a refurb but for split rims I reckon I am looking at about £400 min for the set.
