Text: Peter Tomalin / Photos: Andy Morgan July 2004 Screw your eyes up and it could almost be an M3. Or at least that's what BMW is hoping you'll think. To help persuade young thrusters like you that Diesel is Cool, it's given this Coupe the full treatment - M Aerodynamic bodykit including rear lip spoiler, 18in M Sport alloys, sturdily bolstered sports seats, serious-looking dark grey trim, an M Sport multi-function steering wheel, and a more sporting suspension set-up. And yep, it looks the badger's. But it ain't cheap. You might well think that over thirty grand for a diesel-engined 3-Series is pretty steep, and you might well have a point. In fact, by the time you've totted up the cost of leather, sat-nav, six-disc CD changer and a couple of extra airbags (one specially designed to soften the blow to your wallet) the price-as-tested of this car is just twenty quid shy of thirty-five big ones. Or to put it another way, just ΂£6000 less than the basic price of an M3. So it had better be good. It has, needless to say, more torque than the Queen Mary. This is the second generation of BMW's six-cylinder common-rail turbodiesel engine and though the 204bhp at 4000rpm is obviously pretty ho-hum, the 302lb ft of torque at 1500rpm is anything but. BMW quotes 0-62mph in 7.2sec, and if anything that feels a tad conservative. But as with most diesels, it's the mid-range punch that's the killer. Try it in third. There's really meaty urge all the way from 1500rpm, swelling through 2000 and 3000 into something extremely muscular, but it's not finished there. Between 3000rpm and 4000rpm it's making serious shove, and OK, from about 4250rpm it starts to tail off and there's not a lot of point chasing the last few hundred rpm, but by then it's made its point. And it'll make it again in fourth and fifth, too. Even the rattle on start-up is fairly subdued. And though once on the move only a ninny would say you can't tell it's a diesel, it's far from objectionable. Where the old engine sounded gravelly, this one has a gritty treble along with the soft huff of the turbo, but underlying it is the familiar warble of a BMW straight-six. You could easily live with this soundtrack; you may even grow to like it. You'll certainly like the way the fuel gauge seems to be stuck in the upper quadrant. Despite my very best efforts I couldn't get the computer read-out to drop below 32mpg; a similarly driven M3 wouldn't see the polite side of 20mpg. According to the official figures it'll do 42.8mpg on the Combined cycle. And no, we shouldn't care, this being evo, but most people do. Is it as much fun as an M3? Of course not. No diesel can recreate the epic drama that unfolds when you nail an M3's throttle to the bulkhead and hear it rise and soar and feel the power burgeon as you wring out all those wonderful revs. And partly as a consequence of that wondrously broad power-band, the M3 remains the more compelling cross-country companion. But the 330Cd is more than a match for the similarly priced 330Ci. Its chassis has that unendingly delightful BMW blend of tautness and compliance, its major controls the familiar consistency of weighting and smooth precision that can make many rivals feel under-developed. And yes, it looks the part too, nicely hunkered down with its arches pleasingly filled by the shallow-walled Michelin Pilot Sports. I guess the 3-Series is the last of the classic BMW line, which was a gradual evolution. Now that we've had the Bangle revolution, it'll never be quite the same again. Maybe it makes this 3-Series look a bit old-fashioned. I'd prefer to call it timeless. Inside, too, it's the last of the old-school BeeEms, form following function rather than a stylist's whims, and in this version liberally coated with carbonfibre-look trim, so the whole ambience is one of no-nonsense functionality. When there's this much fire in their bellies it's increasingly hard to compile a A well-reasoned argument against diesels. So if you're obliged to consider a derv-burner for tax reasons, you should be cock-a-hoop that BMW is producing such a convincing sports coupe around its latest diesel engine. And even if you're not, you should give one a try. As someone else once said, you have nothing to lose but your prejudices. In a BMW. So that would be a 3-series Coupe, then? An M3? Nope, that 'only' has 269lb ft. So maybe an Alpina B3 3.3? Sorry, just 247. Hmm; so the up-coming M3 CSL? Probably going to have 295lb ft or so, if that. Give up? Well think diesel. That's right, a diesel-powered 3-series coupe - the first time the words have ever appeared together on the same spec sheet, and as BMW admits, 'quite inconceivable until recently'. But look at the irresistible logic. BMW's 3-litre straight-six diesel isn't only good, it's extraordinarily accomplished. In fact, even by new-generation diesel standards, it's one of the best. It's smooth mechanically, and refined aurally - certainly once it's actually moving, but increasingly so even when starting up and idling. Not so long ago half a dozen diesels setting off on a test route could sound like the start of a thousand-bomber raid. And the acceptable soundtrack is no longer purely rumble-deadening packaging. The 330Cd isn't only happy to let you hear it, it urges you to enjoy the experience with its positively growling and muscular soundtrack. Like its predecessor, it is still nominally 3 litres, but with a fractionally larger capacity and a significantly more potent delivery. It has typically-diesel long-stroke dimensions, two cams, four valves per cylinder, and 'second generation' common-rail injection, giving higher injection pressure and better control (including the option to inject up to four smoothing fuel doses per working cycle). It has modified, two-stage intake geometry, revised combustion chamber shapes with lower compression ratio, and in all situations it has more efficient air and fuel flow and more efficient combustion. It has variable turbine geometry for its turbocharger, a more efficient intercooler, and the latest DDE5 Digital Diesel Electronics management - with ten times the computing power of the previous software, enhancing both output and refinement. So the bottom line is that power is up by 11 per cent, from 184bhp to 204bhp at 4000rpm, and peak torque is up by five per cent, from 287lb ft to that headline 302lb ft - and remains constant from 1500 to 3000rpm. Which by any standards is a strong foundation for both flexibility and outright performance, especially when combined with a new six-speed manual gearbox. All of which makes it perfectly logical to put the punchy diesel into the sporty shape of the coupe and enjoy the benefits of all that lazy grunt with the bonus of a Combined economy of 42.8mpg and a CO2 figure of 177g/km. But you don't have to drive the 330Cd Coupe far to realise that this package isn't going to sell solely on economy and ecology because, not surprisingly, it goes a bit, too. The bare figures are 'impressive for a diesel' - 150mph, 0-62mph in 7.2sec - but they're a poor yardstick of how the 330Cd feels on almost any kind of road. The quoted fourth-gear time from 50 to 75mph is more revealing, but only a bit more. It's 6.1 seconds, and as such is almost a second quicker than the 3-litre petrol-powered 330Ci coupί¿½. But what the numbers don't do justice to is the sheer, lazy relentlessness of the diesel's mid-range, mid-gear flexibility. On the fast uphill sweeps and hairpins of the road tester's dream road, from Marbella up to Ronda, the 330Cd's combination of huge torque and six properly-spaced gears gives driveability as mountainously impressive as the surrounding scenery. It doesn't quite match the high-revving aural satisfaction of the petrol sixes, but it's ludicrously easy to stroke along at unfeasible averages with no more than an occasional flick between second, third and fourth gears to keep it at an unflustered rolling boil and exploit a torque peak which spans close on half the effective rev range. Point and squirt was rarely a better description. The 330Cd also benefits from the family updating of the 3-series range, including mild styling revisions (mostly around the face), and a scattering of new paint and trim colours and interior details. Big news on the options list are 'adaptive headlights', which turn in tune with the steering. They're controlled by speed, yaw and steering angle sensors and point in the direction the front wheels are headed. BMW claims they make objects 34 per cent more visible at night; they certainly seem very effective. The coupe has a more aggressive chassis set-up than the equivalent saloon, with lower ride-height and firmer springs and dampers but, interestingly, a more than usually supple ride even on the optional 'sport' suspension and 18in wheel/tyre combo. It also has appropriately big brakes and all the usual electronic gubbins from ABS to CBC and DSC, but you'd be more surprised if it didn't. Don't, though, get the impression that the 330Cd sounds the death knell for its nearest petrol cousins - it doesn't. Good as it is, it won't be for everybody, for exactly the same reasons why the bare numbers are such an inadequate yardstick. There's a big subjective difference between lazily quick and zippily quick, and you pays your money (how much is yet to be announced), you takes your choice - from early next year in the UK. Intriguing. Auto Express Car Reviews By Oliver MarriageJune 2004 Buying a performance car is a fraught business. Sure, you get driving pleasure, but you must also contend with high running costs and hefty fuel consumption, not to mention rocketing insurance premiums. But we've found a route around all these hassles: take the diesel option. Consider the new BMW 330Cd. It averages 43.5mpg on the combined cycle, yet has a top speed of 150mph. As many driving enthusiasts have already discovered, the Bavarian manufacturer is right at the cutting edge of oil-burning technology. Its engines are as good, or in some cases better than, the equivalent petrol models. The company recently launched its first diesel coupί¿½, the 320Cd, while later this year a 535d will be unveiled, complete with twin turbochargers and 272bhp. But for the time being, it is the stylish looks of the two-door 3-Series, teamed with the firm's 3.0-litre second-generation oil-burner, that will be causing problems for petrol rivals. That's because it's a great car. The combination of coupί¿½ body and the best diesel engine in the business is a convincing one. The styling of the BMW Coupί¿½ may not be overly dramatic, but it's a tidy piece of design which incorporates a practical interior. A full four-seater with a decent boot, the BMW's driving position and seats are impressive, and the cabin is finished to a very high standard. However, it's what happens when you twist the ignition key that makes the 330Cd so special, as there are no indications that you've kicked a diesel into life, so silent and free from vibrations is the engine. You'll soon guess what fuels the 330Cd when you hit the accelerator, though, because from 1,400rpm onwards the Coupί¿½ takes off on a 410Nm wave of torque - that is 45Nm more than an M3! We have no doubt this is BMW's fastest diesel model so far, and it feels substantially swifter than the claimed 7.2-second 0-62mph time suggests. In fact, in real driving conditions on British roads, the 204bhp car is no slower than the 343bhp M3 - it really is that fast. The diesel's ride is far better, too, yet it isn't lacking in the thrills department. There's no need to change down through the gears for corners; instead, let the powerplant's ample mid-range punch do the work. It's a very satisfying experience, not least due to the balanced chassis and accurate steering. The gearbox also has a rewarding action, but with a powerband that stretches from 1,500rpm to nearly 5,000rpm, there's little need to use it. And all the time you can relax in the knowledge that you're achieving more than 40mpg. On a long run it'll get you to your destination more quickly than the M3, too, as the 330d will squeeze 605 miles out of a tank of diesel. By comparison, the high-performance petrol car will have to fill up around every 329 miles. But most buyers will have one main reason for choosing the 330Cd - and that's the tax benefits. As the unit emits only 177g/km of CO2, this model sits in the 21 per cent tax bracket, which could potentially save a company car driver enough to pay for a decent holiday. Below 140 g/km CO2 – for most convertibles this is a target for the future. The four-cylinder diesel engine in the BMW 320d undercuts this limit with the same amount of ease as it propels the BMW 3 Series Convertible. More 380 Nm and 135 kW (184 hp) are power and performance levels most engines never achieve. The engine in the BMW 320d not only achieves these, it does this on just 5.1 litres over 100 kilometres and with just 135 g/km CO2. Frictional losses have been reduced by around 3.5 percent compared with its direct predecessor.Compelling power development and excellent fuel efficiency combine in the sophisticated 3.0-litre diesel power unit of the BMW 330d. In just 6.4 seconds, the turbocharged six-cylinder engine propels the Convertible from zero to 100 km/h. Its top speed is 250 km/h. Up to 180 kW (245 hp) stand ready to maximise your open-top driving pleasure, delivered with supreme smoothness and impressive efficiency. The BMW 325d reaches a top speed of 238 km/h at 150 kW (204 hp) and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds.
