Report this review Hi, bought this recently having driven a 318 ,320, 325, 520. The car is what you expect a prestige, luxury car with class oozing outside, one thing I wasn't expecting the ssg gearbox to be this disappointing. I have been a manual driver in the city all my life and I first thought I wouldn't miss it that much, well the auto mode is so stupid sometimes it changes gears when least expected and from 2nd to 3rd gear is instant. I tried my best to work out a driving style but most of the time I haven't got a clue what it will do next. The gearbox is the worst to have didn't research it before I bought the car. Now I'm stuck with a noisy and slow jerky gearbox, the normal auto box, or the manual box will be a dream to have after this one. Don't make the same mistake and get a manual or a auto. Rest of the car is absolutely superb to drive. The engine is exactly what a BMW is about. The power is there for the speed freaks or when ever you need to overtake. This car isn't for the boy racers, you have to get a golf gti turbo and tune it up to what ever takes your fancy. I drove a 230 bhp golf and it used to fly off from the start because it was small and lightweight , I was a boy racer, I must admit. Now I am a family man of four and a can get my kids and wife in the car with a smile. I know they are happy with this one. The sports kit makes it standout and it gets noticed whereever you are. Especially my one is red imola with red Dakota leathers. The engine is the most sophisticated engine I have owned, reliable as a nut. Mpg is not too bad for a 3litre engine wait till you get a M3, town is around 20mpg and motorway is about 30mpg. But most importantly I think the image and the comfort and performance is the main factors that for me doest it. Personally I have always driven BMW and golf and Audi. I think the BMW is the best out of the 3 cos of the handling ride and suspension are stronger, the pulling power takes you on another planet. This is better than the 325ci or the 328ci, believe me I have driven these and I think the 330 ci is the don. It's approaching it's 7th birthday, and in my opinion is a supurb machine. There was a few nigging faults when it was new, with the windows, quite a common problem, and the central locking has a fit every now and again. It has been through a couple of coil packs too, but they are quite cheap to replace.Enough of the negative points, this car drives like a dream, fast, and responsive when you want. Plenty fast enough to have your partner shouting in your ear to slow down, when you see some open road, but a quiet comfortable cruiser on long motorway runs. It is pretty fuel efficient too. I often get mid 30's MPG on the motorway, and mid 20's around town. Lets not forget this is a 3 litre in-line 6 cylinder engine with 231 BHP and 300 NM torque, so if you are heavy with your right foot you will certainly scoff fuel, and leave large amounts of rubber on the road. The SE specification car is identical to the sport underneath, (sport spec if just cosmetic) but is a bit softer mainly due to 17" wheels. I have updraded these to the MV1 Sport wheels which have hardened the ride, but increased the grip considerably, which I would reccommend.Servicing is not as expensive as the brand would suggest. The variable service indication allows 15,500 or 2 years whichever is sooner. It does adjust to differing driving styles, and if you drive with too much spirit too often, which I did at the beginning, it needed a service at around 10-12,000 which I thought was pretty excellent. I have to also mention the quality of this machine. For example my car has covered 35,000 miles and is still on the original discs and pads on the front (due to be changed soon). That's a lot of driving!The main dealers are much beter than they used to be, and get a quote from a couple before you book. Any car over 4 years old should get a 10% discount on servicing. The 330CI should cost in my experience around £150 for a basic oil service, Then around £200 for an Inspection one, then it would have another oil service, then the big one the Inspection Two which is the major service at around £300. The brake fluid needs changing every two years costing around £90.I know people with Mercedes and Audis who pay far greater sums for some inferior vehicles in comparison to the 330.To sum up a great car, and if you can get hold of an older low milage vehicle fantastic value for money. A good one from a dealer should only set you back around £8,000, which is amazing for a car which costs over £30,000 new. A newer one from a main BMW dealer wlll of course cost a lot more. There were others that were cheaper but not from an actual BMW dealer and to be honest the service we receieved from the dealer was very good (Scothalls of Southampton). Ours came with the M sport pack which means you get full leather interior, m sport gear lever and steering wheel. Externally you get side skirts a boot lip spoiler a more aggresive front grill and 18inch ......a pain in the bottom to clean!!!!!!!!!! Saftey is a prime with numerous air bags, abs, traction control to name but a few. Its at this point that I have to tell you my own issues with the traction control. I personally think it kicks in too soon and cuts the power immediately meaning that if the road is slightly greasey and your trying to nip out of a road into traffic you could be in for some serious kangarooing. It was stacked to the eyeballs with gadgets and extras, but I was interested in the engine. Driving this car was quite amazing. The engine is so smooth and so quiet it is easy to go extremely quickly without realising it. The car I drove had BMW's automatic Steptronic gearbox. This means that it can be driven as an automatic (stick it in Drive and leave it) or can be switched to Steptronic mode ......change gears manually by nudging the lever backwards and forwards. In sport mode the automatic changes up a gear once it hits the redline. The engine revs very freely and the 6500rpm redline comes around very quickly. Even with the automatic box, this car accelerates very quickly, and is very quick overall. The car itself is solidly built as you would expect for a BMW. I have always had BMW's my last 2 have been 330 ci sports, I went into the show room to upgrade and the dealer showed this 330d because it had the sat nav on which I wanted. At first I was not sure with it being a diesel, I dont like my cars to sound like vans!!! but after getting in and starting it up I was surprised to hear how good the 6 cylinder turbo sounded, so I took the car for a test drive, WOW!!! it was just as fast if not faster than my previous 02 plate 330 sport, with the added bonus of 50 mpg ( I have had the car for 3 months now and the best I get is 35mpg) could be me!!
