Auto Express Car Reviews Text: Paul Bailey / Photos: Nathan Morgan May 2008 Rating: It’s the car that’s created a new niche in the market: an opinion-splitting mix of coupé and SUV the likes of which we’ve never seen before. Or so BMW would like you to think. Auto Express first tried the new X6 in the US. But while we were impressed by its engineering and dramatic styling, we were unconvinced by its broader appeal. Now, the world’s first Sports Activity Coupé has arrived in the UK. So does it make any more sense here, or are our doubts over its lack of space and high price tag still justified? If BMW’s marketing men are to be believed, the X6 is in a class of its own – and when it comes to the styling, that’s certainly true. It resembles a pumped-up X5 complete with a dramatically sloping roofline, and so is hardly lacking in road presence. Every panel is new, though, from the sleeker bumpers to the widened wings and that incredible tail. But it’s a big car, and potential buyers would be well advised to specify the optional 20-inch alloys, which help to fill out the flared wheelarches. At the front, the X6 has a similar face to the X5. And the familiar feel continues inside, with the same dashboard layout. It’s logically arranged and flawlessly put together, and features superb materials. The driving position is perfect and space up front is generous, although the same cannot be said of the rear. Despite its size, the X6 is a strict four-seater – and passengers over six feet tall will struggle for headroom, due to that sloping roofline. Boot capacity is a healthy 570 litres with the seats in place and 1,450 litres folded flat. And although the area is a little shallow, the hatchback tail makes loading much easier. Under the skin, the X6 shares a lot mechanically with the X5, but adds BMW’s clever Dynamic Performance Control (DPC) package. This enhances the traction and stability served up by the xDrive 4x4 system by splitting torque not only between the front and rear axles, but also the left and right-hand wheels. As a result, it can send power to the tyre with the most grip, depending on the conditions. The set-up works very smoothly, and only under extreme provocation does it make its presence felt, with one wheel clawing at the road surface to maintain composure. Combine this new transmission with a widened track, and the X6 simply flies around corners. Most impressively, it does so while managing to belie its size. The BMW shrinks around you and is surprisingly agile. Much of the credit for this must go to the steering, which is direct and accurate, and the suspension, which resists body roll well. Adding to the fun is the 286bhp 3.0-litre twin-turbodiesel powerplant, which features under the bonnet of the X6 35d driven here. The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission as standard, and provides outstanding performance, thanks to its torque figure of 580Nm. The benchmark 0-60mph sprint is dispatched in only 6.9 seconds, yet the big X6 is also economical, returning 34mpg on the combined cycle. The oil-burner is refined as well, offering a hushed note at all times. Other power choices in the range include a 3.0-litre diesel with a single turbo in the 30d. This delivers 235bhp and arrives later this summer. There are two twin-turbo petrol models: a 306bhp 3.0-litre and a 407bhp 4.4-litre V8 for the flagship 44i. Predictably, the X6 isn’t especially cheap. At just over £44,000, our car costs nearly £1,500 more than the equivalent X5, even though it’s neither as practical nor as spacious. So what you are really paying for is the styling. BMW is counting on potential buyers to do just that – and judging by the waiting list, it’s right. RIVAL: Range Rover Sport Land Rover should have beaten BMW to become the first maker to produce an SUV coupé – remember the three-door Range Stormer concept it revealed in 2004? Still, the Range Rover Sport is a fine machine in its own right. It can’t quite match the X6 for driver appeal or radical looks, but it’s a proper off-roader and a very capable all-rounder. It weighs more than two tonnes, yet accelerates and corners with the verve of a hot hatchback. It’s also striking to look at, plus is impeccably well put together. We can’t ignore the fact that there’s very little room in the back, or that an X5 or 535d Touring would offer a similar experience for less money. But for those who rate being able to stand out above everything else – this is your car! Compared to Mercedes-Benz, BMW came relatively late to the diesel game in 1983 with its 524td. But since then, BMW has steadily increased its focus, with diesels now comprising 71 percent of European sales. BMW hopes that roller-coaster gas prices (and a projected decline in diesel costs) will create a paradigm shift in the U.S. Will Americans finally warm up to the technology? Coming to North America this month are two clean diesel Bimmers, the BMW 335d sedan, which we recently tested , and the X5 xDrive 35d. Both share the same powerplant. We road-tripped the clean diesel X5 from BMW headquarters in Munich down the autobahn, through the Alps and into northern Italy to assess how it manages a challenging road trip. — Basem Wasef The Specs The X5 gets a subtle face lift for 2009, but more notable is the option of a clean diesel 3.0-liter inline-6 engine that's BIN5-approved and legal in all 50 states. The powerplant uses common rail piezo injectors that operate with up to 2000 bar pressure, and modulate up to five shots of fuel per combustion stroke. Variable twin-turbos create broad power delivery thanks to a small turbine operating at lower rpms, and a larger one that takes over at higher engine speeds. Unlike Euro-spec diesels, the 35d's aluminum-block engine uses a urea injection system to cope with stringent North American NOx requirements. After exhaust passes through a maintenance-free particulate filter, a dosing module injects urea using a NOx sensor, and exhaust gases exit through an SCR catalyst. The urea tank requires refills roughly every 12,000 miles; they're done for free with every oil change for the first four years or 50,000 miles of the car's life. Aggressive driving will increase urea usage, and if a refill is required before an oil change, the customer is responsible for the top-off cost. Due to an EPA mandate, all diesels with urea injection systems are required to warn drivers when urea levels are low and disable the car when the tank is empty. Warnings on the X5 start 1500 miles before the tank empties, and if warnings are ignored, the system counts down a preset number of engine starts before the vehicle is disabled. The X5's inline-6 produces 265 horsepower at 4220 rpm and an impressive 425 lb.-ft. of torque at only 1750 rpm—the same torque as a Chrysler 6.1-liter V8 Hemi, and not far off from the amount produced by the V12 found in last year's BMW 7-series. EPA estimates fuel economy at 19 mpg city and 25 mpg highway. And BMW claims a 0–60 mph time of 7.0 seconds flat. Both are notable numbers considering the X5 has a curb weight of 5225 pounds, 309 more than its gasoline counterpart. The Drive The X5 xDrive 35d's interior feels just as buttoned down as you'd expect from a modern BMW, with leather balanced with tasteful wood and aluminum trim along the doors, dash and transmission tunnel. An optional panoramic roof lightens up the mood a bit, though part of the X5's appeal has always been its simple Germanic purposefulness. Unfortunately, the X5 hasn't received the easier-to-use iDrive units found in the new 3-series and 7-series. But that's sure to come—eventually. The X5 diesel produces a bit more click-clack sound at startup than the 335d sedan, but these mechanical noises do make more sense when they come from an SUV. Click the fly-by-wire shifter into "D" and heavy pressure on the right pedal produces strong thrust. Remember, there's 425 lb.-ft. of torque way down at 1750 rpm, so the X5 accelerates with far more insistence than you'd expect from a 3.0-liter inline-6. We found ourselves punching the throttle at green lights, then letting up on the gas about 1500 rpm before the 5000 rpm redline in order to maximize the engine's strong low and mid-range power. On the A8 towards Salzburg, we took advantage of the open stretches of unrestricted autobahn and hit an indicated 130 mph; the electronically limited top speed was due to our X5's H-rated tires. But sport package–equipped models will have a higher top-end. Though handling is generally competent for an SUV, there's sometimes a bit of steering uncertainty during higher-speed transitions. Nonetheless, overall chassis stability is rock-solid when cruising above 100 mph. We saw an observed fuel economy number of 23 mpg during the 200-mile drive from Germany to Italy, which included plenty of high-speed runs on twisty alpine passes. The Bottom Line Given the waning popularity of gas-guzzling SUVs stateside, we're guessing a clean diesel X5 might fill a need for a reasonably fuel-efficient tall wagon with impressive acceleration. Thanks to a fat torque band that's well-suited to American driving habits, the X5 xDrive 35d has plenty to offer. That is, if buyers can get over those old 1980s notions that diesels are slow and stinky. Starting in the fall of 2008, two models will be available with a 3.0-liter biturbo in-line six diesel engine. They'll make their first appearance at the 2008 North American International Auto Show. The 335d and X5 xDrive 35d will be the first BMW diesels sold in the U.S. in well over two decades. The Advanced Diesel with BluePerformance is a version of BMW's diesel in-line six that's already sold in Europe, where diesels account for two-thirds of the company's new vehicle sales. The addition of BluePerformance urea injection allows these models to be sold in all fifty states, even those following California's strict emissions standards. BluePerformance uses a solution called AdBlue, which is basically urea (yes, that urea) that is injected into the exhaust gas to turn nitrous oxides into nitrogen gas and water vapor. This works with a diesel particulate filter to reduce emissions. The AdBlue solution should only need to be replenished during regular service intervals, and BMW will include free refills in its 4-year/50,000-mile maintenance program. This is the same system that Mercedes-Benz uses in its Bluetec diesels. But you don't care about any of that, as long as it means you can get a 3-series with 265 hp and - get ready for this - 425 lb-ft of torque. Wait, 425 lb-ft? As in 130 more than the new M3? Yes, indeed. What's more, two differently sized turbochargers help make that torque available at only 1750 rpm. The smaller of the two spins up first to minimize lag at lower rpm, and the larger turbo comes on at higher engine speeds to keep things going. The diesel-equipped 3-series has a claimed 0-to-62-mph time of 6.2 seconds - a claim we'd believe, since several Automobile Magazine editors have driven the car in Europe. The 335d is estimated to return fuel economy of 23 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. The X5 xDrive 35d will take an extra second to reach 62 mph and will consume diesel at a rate of 19 mpg around town and 25 mpg in highway driving. If these models take hold - and we sincerely hope they do - we expect to see this engine in additional U.S. models. And there's more where that came from, because BMW has a diesel V-8 and three four-cylinders in various models running around the Continent. For more information on diesels in the U.S. market, take a look at 'Diesels: What's all the clatter about?' in the related links below. Diesels: What's all the clatter about? Get with the program!
