Although the 530d, 523i, 528i, 535i and 550i models have been on sale since the start of 2010, notching up more 2000 sales, it's the 520d that everyone's been waiting for. Last time round, in the E60 saloon, more than two out of every five BMW 5 Series sold was a 520d. It's not difficult to see why, when it was capable of 55.4mpg and its low emissions (136g/km CO2) drove down company car BIK bills. In fact, BMW could sell this model today and it would still be the most economical and lowest emitting car executive car around. But they've gone one better. The latest 520d SE in the new F10 BMW 5 Series increases economy by 2.2mpg to 57.6mpg and brings emissions down to a scarcely believable 129g/km CO2 - a 7g/km improvement. That's great news for private buyers as the 520d SE has now slipped underneath the 130g/km threshold, into Road Tax Band D and qualifies for free Road Tax in the first year. After that, it's costs a mere £90 to put a Road Fund Licence on it every year. To put that in perspective, there are some superminis - like the Chevrolet Aveo and several versions of the Vauxhall Corsa that have higher emissions. All-in-all, it's 1.4 per cent more fuel efficient and has five per cent lower emissions than the old BMW 5 Series. This has been achieved by using BMW's latest Efficient Dynamics fuel-saving technologies. BMW's start-stop system makes its 5 Series debut on manual models and there's brake energy regeneration. This is coupled with other, smaller improvements including electric power steering, a gear shift indicator, improved aerodynamics and 17-inch reduced rolling resistance tyres. Company car buyers should be pleased, too. The 520d SE is liable for just 18 per cent BIK tax, whereas the cleanest - though not as powerful - Audi and Mercedes-Benz alternatives are both 19 per cent. Compare it against engines with similar horsepower and you're looking at 21 and 19 per cent respectively. On start-up there's noticeable clatter, but once moving it doesn't feel like the 530d's poor relation. It's quick - much quicker than you'd expect the ‘eco' model of the range to be - with 60mph achievable in 8.1 seconds and a top speed of 141mph. It's everything that a sporty large exec should be, with excellent steering, a good ride (the new style run-flats are a major improvement on those fitted to the old car) and refined, smooth performance. With 380Nm of torque available, the 520d always puts in a gutsy performance for its size and is anything but a slouch. Standard equipment includes Dakota leather upholstery, Bluetooth, front and rear park distance control, a radio CD, automatic air conditioning, 17-inch alloy wheels, iDrive with a seven-inch screen and part-electric seat adjustment. Prices start at £28,045, which represents just a £20 increase on the old model despite extra equipment (like leather upholstery and Bluetooth), a lower tax band and added fuel-saving technology. Vital, apart from anything else. You don’t need me to tell you how important the 181bhp 520d is. Not only for BMW but also for the many thousands of drivers that face the next few years behind its thick-rimmed steering wheel. Company car sales alone are likely to account for up to 8000 units in the first year if 2009 figures are anything to go by. See test pics of the BMW 520d What’s it like? The good news is that the four-pot engine, which manages a class-leading 129g/km of CO2 and 57.6mpg, is a pleasant motor to use. It can become gruff if pushed very hard but in general it has plenty of punch for overtaking and never feels overwhelmed by the 1625kg kerbweight, settling into an easy lull for cruising around at motorway and urban speeds. You’ll have to work the gearbox a bit for fast progress – many will opt for the £1495 eight-speed automatic - but the manual has the typically tight BMW shift so it’s no chore to use. Nor is it a chore to sit back and relax in the 520d. Our test car rode on 18-inch alloys and run-flat tyres, and also came fitted with £965 worth of adaptive dampers, which adjust continuously but are also affected by the four ‘Dynamic Drive Control’ settings. With all this fitted the 5-series never feels uncomfortable. A tad fidgety in Sport mode, yes, but it never loses its composure and in default ‘Normal’ setting, occupants are well isolated from the road’s surface and the 5 settles into a happy blend of balanced body control and pliant damping. The only real disappointment is the steering. It isn’t something that is likely to bother those looking to the 520d purely for its practicality, but it is too inconsistent and vague to satisfy the many hoping for a sharp steer. It’s weighted well enough that it won’t prevent a driver from enjoying the 520d, but it certainly lacks any real sensation. Should I buy one? Yes. It may not be about to set any new benchmarks for driver reward, nor is it particularly exciting. But this is easily one of the most appealing cars in its class, not only because of its low emissions and tax rating, but also because it is competitively priced and equipped, has a great interior, pleasant handling and excellent refinement. A bit dull, but still one of the most complete packages around. The BMW 520D SE is very popular with company car drivers as it has an impressive reputation for reliability and with an efficient diesel engine is very economical to run. The fuel economy averages at 55.4mpg and the tax for the year is only £150. BMW say the car is economical due to what they call their ‘EfficientDynamics’ technology. This includes a whole host of small but collectively significant features like Brake Energy Regeneration, active aerodynamics, an optimum gear shift indicator and low rolling resistance tyres. Inside the BMW 520D SE is a superb leather interior of high standard with electrically adjustable seats, climate and cruise controls, stability control and parking sensors as some of the features. There is an optional sat nav available. Such is the reputation of the BMW 520D SE it is in serious demand as a used vehicle, residual values being extremely strong. A BMW 520D SE registered in June 06 would be approximately £15,000 on the used car market. There are more efficient models available from September 07 onwards but these will obviously be much pricier. Then there are the figures of 72% – the percentage of 5-series sales that were the 520d last year – and 71%, which is the corporate split of those sales, proving quite how vital the 520d is to the BMW’s fortunes. And then there’s KwikCarcost’s prediction of a 56.2p cost per mile, compared with the Merc’s 61.7p and the Audi A6’s 64.5p. The power for the new 520d comes from the same 2.0-litre 184hp engine that’s in the 109g/km 320d Efficient Dynamics model. It’s plenty potent enough, never leaving the driver feeling short-changed. The refinement is first class, with little noise penetrating the cabin, and improved ride comfort over the previous 5-series doesn’t come at the expense of the car’s sporting reputation. ADVERTISEMENT: Content Continues Below The major fly in the ointment is the addition of electric power steering, a feature that improves economy but unfortunately adds unpleasantly artificial steering that lacks in feel. Given BMW’s brilliant history in this area, it’s a massive let-down. The SE trim level now has leather and Bluetooth fitted as standard, which means £2200 of formerly optional for the £20 price increase over the old car. There’s also an M Sport trim level at £3225 over the SE, with a series of bodywork additions, different alloys and interior improvements. Steering apart, the new 520d gives nothing for businesses or their drivers to quibble about. There’s one more figure that shows how impressive the new model is, and that’s the perfect 10/10 awarded by BusinessCar.
