Although the 530d, 523i, 528i, 535i and 550i models have been on sale since the start of 2010, notching up more 2000 sales, it's the 520d that everyone's been waiting for. Last time round, in the E60 saloon, more than two out of every five BMW 5 Series sold was a 520d. It's not difficult to see why, when it was capable of 55.4mpg and its low emissions (136g/km CO2) drove down company car BIK bills. In fact, BMW could sell this model today and it would still be the most economical and lowest emitting car executive car around. But they've gone one better. The latest 520d SE in the new F10 BMW 5 Series increases economy by 2.2mpg to 57.6mpg and brings emissions down to a scarcely believable 129g/km CO2 - a 7g/km improvement. That's great news for private buyers as the 520d SE has now slipped underneath the 130g/km threshold, into Road Tax Band D and qualifies for free Road Tax in the first year. After that, it's costs a mere £90 to put a Road Fund Licence on it every year. To put that in perspective, there are some superminis - like the Chevrolet Aveo and several versions of the Vauxhall Corsa that have higher emissions. All-in-all, it's 1.4 per cent more fuel efficient and has five per cent lower emissions than the old BMW 5 Series. This has been achieved by using BMW's latest Efficient Dynamics fuel-saving technologies. BMW's start-stop system makes its 5 Series debut on manual models and there's brake energy regeneration. This is coupled with other, smaller improvements including electric power steering, a gear shift indicator, improved aerodynamics and 17-inch reduced rolling resistance tyres. Company car buyers should be pleased, too. The 520d SE is liable for just 18 per cent BIK tax, whereas the cleanest - though not as powerful - Audi and Mercedes-Benz alternatives are both 19 per cent. Compare it against engines with similar horsepower and you're looking at 21 and 19 per cent respectively. On start-up there's noticeable clatter, but once moving it doesn't feel like the 530d's poor relation. It's quick - much quicker than you'd expect the ‘eco' model of the range to be - with 60mph achievable in 8.1 seconds and a top speed of 141mph. It's everything that a sporty large exec should be, with excellent steering, a good ride (the new style run-flats are a major improvement on those fitted to the old car) and refined, smooth performance. With 380Nm of torque available, the 520d always puts in a gutsy performance for its size and is anything but a slouch. Standard equipment includes Dakota leather upholstery, Bluetooth, front and rear park distance control, a radio CD, automatic air conditioning, 17-inch alloy wheels, iDrive with a seven-inch screen and part-electric seat adjustment. Prices start at £28,045, which represents just a £20 increase on the old model despite extra equipment (like leather upholstery and Bluetooth), a lower tax band and added fuel-saving technology. Vital, apart from anything else. You don’t need me to tell you how important the 181bhp 520d is. Not only for BMW but also for the many thousands of drivers that face the next few years behind its thick-rimmed steering wheel. Company car sales alone are likely to account for up to 8000 units in the first year if 2009 figures are anything to go by. See test pics of the BMW 520d What’s it like? The good news is that the four-pot engine, which manages a class-leading 129g/km of CO2 and 57.6mpg, is a pleasant motor to use. It can become gruff if pushed very hard but in general it has plenty of punch for overtaking and never feels overwhelmed by the 1625kg kerbweight, settling into an easy lull for cruising around at motorway and urban speeds. You’ll have to work the gearbox a bit for fast progress – many will opt for the £1495 eight-speed automatic - but the manual has the typically tight BMW shift so it’s no chore to use. Nor is it a chore to sit back and relax in the 520d. Our test car rode on 18-inch alloys and run-flat tyres, and also came fitted with £965 worth of adaptive dampers, which adjust continuously but are also affected by the four ‘Dynamic Drive Control’ settings. With all this fitted the 5-series never feels uncomfortable. A tad fidgety in Sport mode, yes, but it never loses its composure and in default ‘Normal’ setting, occupants are well isolated from the road’s surface and the 5 settles into a happy blend of balanced body control and pliant damping. The only real disappointment is the steering. It isn’t something that is likely to bother those looking to the 520d purely for its practicality, but it is too inconsistent and vague to satisfy the many hoping for a sharp steer. It’s weighted well enough that it won’t prevent a driver from enjoying the 520d, but it certainly lacks any real sensation. Should I buy one? Yes. It may not be about to set any new benchmarks for driver reward, nor is it particularly exciting. But this is easily one of the most appealing cars in its class, not only because of its low emissions and tax rating, but also because it is competitively priced and equipped, has a great interior, pleasant handling and excellent refinement. A bit dull, but still one of the most complete packages around. Request Brochure Test Drive Best Deals There's an affordable new BMW 5-Series on the block - an entry-level turbo diesel with all the advantages of this refined premium saloon at an attractive price. It's still not cheap, but at £25,925 there's no denying the appeal of this "budget" 5-Series. The six-speed manual gearbox fitted to my new 520d was slick enough, but it wouldn't be my transmission of choice and that immediately makes the entry-level car nearly £1500 more expensive. Well-spaced ratios and a light action make the manual box easy to use, but if the 520d was on my shopping list I'd spend the extra £1450 and bag myself a six-speed Steptronic automatic. It's one of the smoothest-changing auto systems on the market and makes driving the 5-Series a relaxing affair. But my 520d test car was manually cogged - a transmission which takes full advantage of the two-litre turbo diesel's quite astonishing economy potential. Compared to the automatic 520d the manual manages to average an additional seven miles for every gallon. That's an amazing differential. What's more, on the extra urban cycle the automatic's quite respectable 51.4mpg looks downright excessive set against the manual 520d's frugal 61.1mpg. It underlines the efficiency of the 163bhp engine and the manual gearbox. On gently populated urban roads and open countryside I was astonished to see the on-board computer average 54.3mpg - achieved with a fair amount of cruising at the legal limit and a lot of brisk overtaking. Driving hard, I still managed 43mpg. It should have come as no surprise. This engine is already used in the new 3-Series and X3. It's very smooth, delivers exceptional pulling power and runs cleanly with an exhaust emission level of just 158g/km. That adds up to good news for company drivers looking to lower tax bills and private owners keen to stretch every gallon of Derv as far as possible. Performance is adequate rather than dynamic. The 163bhp is fully developed at 4000rpm while peak torque of 250lb/ft arrives at 2000rpm. Acceleration from rest is a leisurely affair with 62mph coming up in just under nine seconds while the vital overtaking slot between 50mph and 75mph is covered in an impressive seven seconds in fourth. At no time did the modest 520d feel underpowered - but this is no BMW fireball. Top speed looks good on paper at 139mph. In reality it means the car is good for a comfortable 100mph and very laid back at the legal motorway limit with only intrusive tyre roar invading the well-insulated cabin. Engine noise is perfectly suppressed. Even at tickover the turbodiesel produces little more than a soft compression ignition knock while throttle pick-up is impressively quick and clean. Like all 5-Series models this one gets DSC+, the latest version of BMW's excellent dynamic stability control system. It makes the most of the car's outstanding chassis, lightweight suspension and powerful braking. Not only does it deliver advanced traction and cornering control but DSC+ delivers Hill Start Assist, Brake Standby to reduce emergency braking times, Rain Brake Support to keep discs dry, Fading Compensation to maximise stopping power even when the brakes are hot and Soft Stop to ensure all stops are jerk-free and smooth. Of all these features the most practical on the manual 520d is Hill Start Assist. It allows the car to be driven away on a steep hill without the risk of the car running backwards in those embarrassing milliseconds between letting off the handbrake and getting the clutch to bite. It's a small point but, like the Soft Stop programme, it helps smooth the driving experience for whoever is at the wheel and his or her passengers. It may be at the bottom of the 5-Series turbo diesel food chain, but the 520d is no bargain-basement special. This is a refined and comfortable five-seat executive saloon which carries all of the quality of its more expensive sisters. It has the same steel and aluminium composite body construction as the rest of the family which means a strong and lightweight body. That in turn makes the modestly-powered 520d feel agile. Front suspension arms, the front chassis legs and the bonnet are aluminium. It's the same story at the back where the superb four-link arrangement carrying the driving wheels also uses weight-saving alloy. On a cross-country route I found very little difference in journey times between the 520d and the mighty 550i. The simple fact is that the 520d is quick enough for Britain's congested roads. It may not have the cache of a 550i, but then again it does not cost the mighty five-litre V8's £43,550. The 520d is very much the "junior rank" 5 but it's an impressive car for the price and likely to become many a fleet manager's best prestige friend. Second Opinon: If you're looking for excitement from a BMW, search elsewhere. This is not an especially interesting car, at least compared with other models in the 5-Series range, and in particular the phrase "The Ultimate Driving Machine" seems heavily ironic here. But it's efficient, it attracts attention (even if the colour scheme didn't endear the test car to friends and neighbours) and of course it has the cachet of the BMW badge - all of which will probably be enough to entice a good many potential buyers. For a start, you might ask why anyone would choose a bog-standard 5 Series with fewer toys than Oliver Twist when you could get a similarly-priced 3 Series replete with powerful engine and all manner of luxurious goodies? But sales figures show the 520d is a very popular car. In 2006, it was the range’s most popular model – and one of BMW’s best-selling fleet cars. Obviously, one of the 5 Series’ attractions is that it is a much bigger car than the cosy 3 Series, and affords the driver a little more stature. But for all its size, the 520d punches well below its weight – at least in environmental terms. Because effectively, you are driving around in a supermini. The 520d saloon has claimed combined fuel economy of 55.4mpg with CO2 emissions of 136g/km, putting it in the lowest possible benefit-in-kind tax band. Just how stunning are these numbers? Well, a Volkswagen Polo 1.9 TDI or a petrol-engined smart fortwo can offer only very slightly better figures. This is thanks to the EfficientDynamics technology now available across most of the BMW range, although in the 520d you don’t get stop-start for some unexplained reason. However, it is likely to feature at a later date. It does come with gearshift indicator, low rolling resistance tyres and active aerodynamics which uses flaps that close in the grille and air vents at speed to make the car more slippery. So the real cleverness is that you don’t really pay in performance terms for the low emissions and excellent fuel economy. It might have supermini emission figures but it performs like a grown-up car. This engine produces 177bhp – about the same as Audi manages to extract from its 2.7-litre TDI unit, albeit the BMW has slightly less torque. It’s still an impressive result, though, and means the 520d manages performance figures of zero to 62mph in 8.3 seconds. It’s adequately fast and from behind the wheel you wouldn’t feel especially short-changed for picking the range’s smallest engine. Despite being a four-cylinder in a car more often known for a six, it’s decently refined and quiet too. It’s hard to fault as a powerplant and plenty of passengers wouldn’t be able to tell they weren’t in something more salubrious. Where it starts to fall down is in the specification. Our test car had seats that were clothed in the sort of austere beige cloth of a 1970s railway station waiting room seat and they were hard, flat and not especially comfortable either. The equipment list includes automatic air conditioning, a CD player and little else, but there is at least a quality atmosphere to the cabin as BMW has improved the standard of plastics, which previously looked a little cheap in some areas. So it’s solid, but most definitely unspectacular. S80: £25,280 A6: £25,320 520d: £27,025 E220: £28,300 EMISSIONS AND TAX RATES There is only one story here and that is the incredibly low level of emissions that BMW has managed with the 520d. Tax-wise, the 520d will cost a 40% taxpayer £162 a month, compared with £185 for the A6, £193 for the S80 and £207 for the Mercedes-Benz. 520d: 136g/km/18% A6: 160g/km/22% E220: 160g/km/22% S80: 165g/km/23% SMR COST Usually you would expect that the Mercedes-Benz would be the most expensive but the costs of the E220 look to be well-controlled. Over 60,000 miles they would equate to £2,694. The BMW comes a close second, at £2,796, while the S80 is the most expensive at £3,000 E220: 4.49 (pence per mile)/£2,694 (60,000 miles total) 520d: 4.66/£2,796 A6: 4.85/£2,910 S80: 5.00/£3,000 FUEL COST The 520d is a long way ahead in fuel costs over three years/60,000 miles, where it would rack up a bill of £4,776 – comparable to 55mpg. In any other comparison, the other cars’ figures would be looking healthy, with the A6 and E220’s £5,712 bill equivalent to 46mpg. 520d: 7.96 (pence per mile)/£4,776 (60,000 miles total) A6: 9.52/£5,712 E220: 9.52/£5,712 S80: 9.82/£5,904 DEPRECIATION COST In terms of cash lost, the A6 does best thanks to its considerably cheaper front end price and 41% RV. In terms of percentage retention, CAP puts the BMW first at 44% after three years/60,000 miles. The E-Class will retain 42% but it has a much higher front-end price. A6: 24.82 (pence per mile)/£14,892 (60,000 miles total) 520d: 25.16/£15,096 S80: 25.21/£15,072 E220: 27.16/£16,296 WHOLELIFE COST The 520d is the lowest in wholelife costs by a distance and that’s quite a feat against some impressive cars. Only the E-Class’s depreciation counts against it while the S80 struggles – its low front end price isn’t backed up in running costs. The A6 does a good job overall. 520d: 37.78 (pence per mile)/£22,668 (60,000 miles total) A6: 39.19/£23,514 S80: 40.05/£24,030 E220: 41.17/£24,702 VERDICT BMW has moved the game so far on in the executive sector with the efficiency and power of its engines that it must have left the competition reeling and wondering how to react. Yet again an EfficientDynamics-equipped BMW strolls to an easy victory, undercutting its rivals on running costs, driver tax bills and driving appeal.
