Request Brochure Test Drive Best Deals I know this isn't an easy thing to do, but just for now let's ignore the BMW M5. If you're not interested in that car's startling performance - or are not prepared to deal with the compromises which result from it - there is a strong case for saying that the 535d is the ultimate 5-Series. Even if you don't count the M5, the 535d is not the fastest car in the range, nor is it the most expensive. And it has stiff competition from within its own stable, supplied by the 540i and the 550i. But those are petrol cars, and the 535d is a diesel. Its three-litre, six-cylinder, twin-turbo engine is rightly regarded as one of the best in the industry. Its maximum power output is 286bhp, which would have seemed like either a typing error or a ridiculously optimistic figure just a few years ago, though it's less than either the 540i or 550i can manage. Like those cars, though, the 535d can go faster than its limited 155mph top speed. Its 0-62mph time of 6.4 seconds is not far short of what the 540i can manage, and although the 550i is a second quicker it uses vastly more fuel. And in any case, 0-62mph times - which don't relate closely to anything you're likely to do on the public road on a regular basis - are not friendly to diesels; it's how the car performs while it's already moving that matters, and there can be no complaints about the 535d on that score. This is a car which, to say the least of it, is quick enough. The diesel engine is one of many to have benefitted recently from BMW's new EfficientDynamics programme. The cleverest part of this in the 535d is the Intelligent Alternator Control with Brake Energy Regeneration system. To tell the tale simply, the 535d recharges its battery partly through energy recovered during braking and coasting, and the alternator is activated only when needed, which improves performance, fuel economy and CO2 emissions. A win-win-win situation, then. One result of all that is that this large executive car has an official combined fuel consumption figure of over 40mpg. That's impressive in itself, but more so because the 535d is also so quick. Nimble, too. I'm prepared to admit that, on a dry road, I set the traction control warning light flashing a couple of times. I'm less ready to explain what I was doing to make that happen. The point is that the superbly crafted rear end of the 5-Series can deal with 286bhp - and with shovelfuls of torque - without seeming in any way concerned about it. In fact, occupants can feel more stressed than the car does. BMW people quietly admit that the company went the wrong way with ride quality a few years ago, and things are definitely improving, but the 535d (in M Sport form at least) still needs work. It's too jittery, too fussy, and that's a shame considering how comfortable the car is in other respects. As with all other 5-Series models, there is a huge amount of room for passengers at either end, and the seats are splendidly comfortable and supportive. As of the 2007 model year, the driver of a six-speed automatic version (and there is no other kind of 535d) gets a restyled gearlever which, frankly, looks bizarre but sits nicely under the hand. The exterior styling, which drew so much adverse criticism when it was first shown, is not as shocking as it once was, though I have to say I still don't find it attractive. The interior is better, but I don't think the test car's Black Dakota leather upholstery did it any favours. This isn't very black at all - more a dark grey, really - and personally I think it cheapens the look of the interior. If it were my £42,000-plus on the line I think I'd choose a colour that did a better job of reflecting the price. The 535d M Sport is well-equipped as standard. The list price includes Dynamics Stability Control, air-conditioning, cruise control, floor mats (often listed as a £75 option in lesser BMWs) and the effective but still complicated iDrive system which looks after the heating, audio, navigation and communication systems. BMWs offered to the press are often fitted with enough options to add a considerable percentage to the basic price. In this case the "extras" total came to £2475, which doesn't seem so bad when you're paying over £42,000 to start with. The most important option was the set of rear side airbags (£230), the cleverest the lane departure warning system (£350), the most expensive the xenon headlights (£720) and the most annoying the sliding front armrest (£130) - can't they just include that as standard? For a further £280 you can also specify DAB digital radio, which is brilliant when you can get the reception. When you can't you can just switch back to FM (or even AM, if you still bother with that) as normal. I didn't fall in love with the 535d M Sport, but I was impressed by it. It's smooth, fast, relatively economical and brilliant to drive. With a different interior colour and a smoother ride I could be seriously smitten. But when they’ve flashed past and I look in the mirror to watch them rapidly disappear behind me, nine times out of ten I’m left feeling slightly cheated when I notice that there are only two pipes poking out from one side at the rear rather than the four of the M Division’s V10-charged uberwagen. The M Aerodynamic package, it would seem, is the bane of the M5 spotter’s life, and this point was rammed home when I picked up this very mildly facelifted 535d M Sport Touring. It was sitting next to two pukka M5 Tourings, and as they were both in a slightly dull slipper-coloured maroon, this silvery-white diesel actually looked the more exciting car.The mild deception continues as you walk past the ‘M double-spoke style’ alloys (admittedly only 18in here, an inch smaller than the proper M5 items), open the door to be greeted by ‘door sill finishers with M designation’ and settle behind the three-spoke M Sport multi-function leather steering wheel.Aha! A difference! There are no paddles in the diesel car. Yet. Soon customers will be able to specify BMW’s all-new sports-shift automatic transmission, which does have them. For now, though, with the new standard auto you at least get a very attractive new shifter that looks like a sort of Brancusi sculpture and is very satisfying when used to shift up (pull back) or down (knock forward). It responds 50 per cent faster than the previous auto and it seems to perfectly match the 535d’s truly fantastic engine.Fundamentally, I’m not a fan of diesel engines. I’ll happily acknowledge diesels that are good, but to me it always feels as though they should belong in their own class and ultimately never quite be compared on a level playing field with the best in the way of petrols. This revised, 282bhp (up 10bhp on before) twin-turbo 3-litre from BMW is different. It’s stonkingly fast, and not just in the usual nice-dollop-of-low-down-torque sort of way. Not only does it hold on to its power after the mid-range, but it actually builds on it so you get a real push into the (sports) seats during the rush to the red line. If you get the chance, try one. You’ll be impressed.Handling-wise, the M Sport 535d’s dynamics are, of course, as fantastic as you’d expect, with wonderful balance and fluidity for such a big car. It’s happy to play too, with huge grip on turn in and a pleasingly mobile rear end if you so wish.An interesting new feature for the refreshed 5-series, and one that’s standard on the 535d, is a lane departure warning system (the reason for the glass eye in the lower front grille). If you stray over a white line on the motorway it makes the wheel gently buzz, which is less disconcerting than CitroΫn’s vibrating seat, and it remains inactive if you indicate when swapping lanes, although I suppose most BMW drivers won’t ever discover that…The other main advances for the updated 5-series are part of what BMW is calling Efficient Dynamics, or in other words, its green policy. This involves such things as brake energy regeneration, which uses the power usually lost when braking or on engine overrun to recharge the battery. This alone has apparently reduced the 535d’s CO2 emissions by 4.4 per cent, thereby helping to preserve your rainy summer holiday in Torquay for years to come.Perhaps a more impressive result of BMW’s efforts is the combined-cycle fuel consumption figure, which has improved by some 17.4 per cent over the pre-facelift model to 40.4mpg, meaning that the 535d isn’t one of these high-performance diesels that negates its original purpose by being almost as thirsty as the equivalent petrol-engined model. So should you buy a 535d M Sport Touring instead of an M5 Touring? Not in straight fight, but if £70K is your entire car budget then you could save a few grand by buying the diesel and then tow your spare-change Caterham to trackdays. There I was, dawdling along at 60-ish with the gearbox in full auto mode, when I decided to try out the manual 'Steptronic' option and slid the gearstick across into the +/- plane. As I did so, the dashboard display flashed up the legend 'M5'. That's M for Manual and 5 for 5th gear, of course, but don't try to tell me that BMW's engineers didn't enjoy a quiet chuckle every time they saw that. They're not without humour, you know. They might also have had a wry smile whenever they saw the traction control light flickering, as I did, at 90mph-plus. Like I said, it's an amusing car... The 535d uses a development of the famous 3-litre straight-six derv-burner, still 3 litres in capacity but now with two sequential turbochargers, the smaller one spinning up first and providing instant oomph: 383lb ft at just 1500rpm. The torque peaks at 413lb ft at 2000rpm (more than the M5), and as the engine reaches higher revs the bigger turbo progressively takes on the job of forcing the mixture into the cylinder heads. Peak power of 272bhp is produced at 4400rpm, though the engine will rev to 5000, which is high for a diesel. BMW claims a 0-62mph time of 6.5sec. And it wouldn't surprise me at all if that's a conservative claim. The 535d is disturbingly, disarmingly and certainly deceptively fast. On a straight of no more than a mile I witnessed it accelerate from 30 to 130 with a barely diminishing vigour and an impressive linearity that wouldn't shame one of BMW's finest petrol engines. Jaguar's bi-turbo diesel is a fine device, too, and probably has this one licked for refinement - although the 5's fairly muted at speed, there's no denying its gravelly diesel voice - but in performance terms the BeeEm feels in a different league. And it still manages over 35mpg on the 'combined' test, though 30mpg is more realistic for people like us. It goes round bends pretty damn smartly too. The 535d Sport corners flat and hard, with the DSC (dynamic stability control) light blinking on January roads. And yes, on more than one occasion it really was winking away at 90mph-plus. That said, it's a wonderfully subtle system, and if it weren't for the telltale you mightn't even know it had intervened to keep you on the steered line. The fact it's kept so busy could be partly to do with the stiff suspension. In Sport guise the 535d feels determined to live up to the 'M' badges that crop up on the kickplates, the steering wheel, and the M5-style 18in alloys. In fact it's not a total triumph. The steering feels stodgily heavy and slow at lower speeds, though the faster you go the less you notice. Similarly the ride, rather lumpen and occasionally caught out by urban lumps and pocks, smooths out at 60mph-plus. Even then there's something heavy-footed about the 535d Sport, a bit like running with your shoes caked in mud. It's as though the suspension isn't quite tuned to the wheels and tyres, and it hasn't quite the sensation of fluid movement of great BMWs of the past. Maybe a little more give in the suspension, not to mention the tyres' sidewalls, wouldn't be the worst thing. The 535d has the dreaded run-flat tyres, and though tyre boffins get miffed when we say this, they don't give the same feel as regular rubber. It's not cheap (interestingly, the regular 3-litre turbo-diesel 530d stays in production, the equivalent model being ΂£4K cheaper). The basic price is ΂£39,200, and this car had ΂£6K worth of extras. But there's no question the engine's a belter. It was replaced by the BMW F10 from Spring 2010. When the E60 was first introduced, many die-hard BMW fans were quick to shoot down the then future model. After much criticism, the E60 became extremely popular among the BMW community as well as the Euro-Car community. It soon surpassed sales of all previous 5 Series models. Furthermore, the E60 was used as a "benchmark" to design many vehicles that were produced after the E60. There are many similar qualities in different automobiles when looking at two side by side. For example, it is rumored that Honda Accord was modeled after the E60. The E60 gained even more acclaim after the LCI (Life Cycle Impulse) model was released in 2008. This LCI model just included a "face-lift" of the front and rear end of the vehicle. This "face-lift" included new front bumper, fog lights, head lights, tail lights, and trunk. The interior was also slightly remodeled as well. The car received so much acclaim in the community that many aftermarket companies started to target the E60 for their source of revenue. Many companies started to make copies of the M-Sport parts for the E60. Hamann, AC Schnitzer, Hartge, Dinan parts also started to flood the market as these companies realized the parts were in high demand. Soon enough, many companies started to make replica parts that were being produced, again due to the high demand for cheap quality parts. Furthermore, many performance companies also started to produce parts to increase the power of the already swift E60. Contents 1 Mid-life restyle (2007) 2 Specifications 2.1 Safety 2.2 Model lineup 3 Production 4 References [edit] Mid-life restyle (2007) Before the mid-life restyling, the models available were the 520i, 520d, 525i, 525d, 530i, 530d, 535d, 545i, and the M5. The model range received uprated engines as part of the restyling. The 523i replaced the 520i as the base model and featured the previous 525i engine, detuned to 177 bhp (132 kW; 179 PS). The 520i was re-introduced to the Asian markets as an entry level model, featuring the 2L N46B20 engine and producing 156 bhp (116 kW; 158 PS). It is notable as the first E60 5 series gasoline variant to be sold with an in-line 4 engine.[6] The 525i received a new 218 bhp (163 kW; 221 PS) engine (up from 192 bhp). The 530i six-cylinder engine output was increased to 272 hp (up from 231 bhp). The 528i replaced the 525i with 230 hp (172 kW) (up from 218 hp (163 kW)). The 535i replaced the 530i with 300 hp (224 kW) (up from 258 hp (192 kW)). The 530d was upgraded to 231 bhp (172 kW; 234 PS) (up from 218 bhp (163 kW; 221 PS)). The 535d was upgraded to 286 bhp (213 kW; 290 PS) (up from 272 bhp (203 kW; 276 PS)). The 540i was introduced with a V8 engine producing 302 bhp (225 kW; 306 PS). The 550i replaced the 545i in the fall of 2005 with 362 bhp (270 kW; 367 PS). The 520d, 525d and the M5 remained the same. BMW 530xi wagon The E60 is available in both sedan and station wagon (E61) platforms. The exterior design by late BMW designer Davide Arcangeli is controversial due to its unusual proportions. The 'eyebrow' of the front headlights was also frowned upon by car magazines for taking away the aggressive look of its predecessors. Its iDrive system has been simplified from the system in the 7 Series. It can be ordered with a full array of options such as active cruise control, head-up display, active steering, and the Harman Kardon Logic7 stereo system. The BMW M5 is the high performance version of the range, and is one of the highest performance sedans on the market. Like all BMW 'M' cars, it balances superb handling with power, which is delivered by a naturally aspirated 5.0 L (40-valve) V10 producing 373 kW (507 PS (373 kW; 500 hp)). The car has a 0–100 km/h time of 4.1 seconds, 0–200 km/h time of 15 seconds, and an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). With appropriate tire ratings and the removal of the limiter the M5 is capable of 205 mph (329 km/h). A derivative of the E60 is the E63/E64 which forms the current iteration of the 6 Series coupe. A factory-stretched long-wheelbase version of the E60 5-Series was offered in China, as a response to the Audi A6 L. It offered much of the rear legroom of a large executive saloon (e.g. BMW 7-Series or Mercedes-Benz S-Class), but in a cheaper, simpler model. As of 2009, trim levels included the 520Li, 523Li, 525Li, and 530Li.[citation needed] [edit] Specifications [edit] Safety Euro NCAP scores[7] Adult Occupant: Child Occupant: Pedestrian: Initially the 5-series received a three-star rating for adult occupants.[8] However changes were made to the steering column, footrest, door trims, door latch, airbags and electronic software and the car was retested achieving its four-star rating. BMW claims the modifications improved the car's EuroNCAP score, not the vehicle's safety; consequently BMW chose not to recall the earlier-built cars.[9] 2008 sedan NHTSA scores[10] Frontal Driver: Frontal Passenger: Side Driver: Side Rear Passenger: Rollover: The American Insurance Institute of Highways Safety (IIHS) gives the 5-series a "Good" overall rating in frontal collisions but a "Marginal" overall rating for side impact collisions.[11][12] The IIHS reported their side impact test would likely cause driver related rib fractures and/or internal organ injuries. The IIHS tests were conducted on models built after May 2007, these models had modifications to improve side impact safety.
