That was the shocking conclusion a few of us faced after testing the sublime BMW 535d on the highways and byways of Southern Spain. Sixty per cent of BMW�s sales in the UK are now accounted for by the oil burner, a fact dictated by tax regulations based on emissions for company cars, and the US system of economy-based taxation plays to the diesels strengths, too, so it�s a major battleground for the executive brands. The 535d is as quiet as its petrol-driven sibling and there�s no telltale smoke whatsoever. The only difference is that it�s faster and costs less to run. Diesels are famous for delivering huge thrust in a narrow power band and feeling limper than week-old salad outside of their chosen rev range. BMW has the answer to this: multi-stage turbo-charging. While, for instance, Jaguar employs its twin-turbos in a side-by-side layout, BMW has opted for an inline set-up. At low engine speeds, the smaller turbocharger does the work and delivers 95 per cent of the available torque at just 1,500rpm. At 2,000rpm, the smaller turbocharger is working flat-out, the larger turbocharger spools up in tandem and all 413lb-ft of torque are available. Towards the red line, a control valve vents some of the gas directly into the exhaust system. The sequential turbocharger technology means that there is a more or less constant 2.85 bar of boost applied to the intercooler. But the real beauty of this, the most powerful six-pot diesel engine ever in a production car, is that none of this technical mumbo-jumbo will even cross your mind when behind the wheel. All the investment and innovation is there to convince you you�re not driving a diesel at all. It took just minutes to plough deep into three figures on foreign roads where the police could only fine us and couldn�t take our precious licence away. Instantly this car felt like a serious sporting proposition, rather than a frugal highway cruiser, and every journalist present took great delight in worrying the 155mph limiter. This oil burner produces enough torque to rip out trees, 413lb-ft to be precise. That�s almost 30 more than the M5. It�s so much twisting power that BMW can�t offer a standard manual box: it just doesn�t have one that could handle the power. However, the car doesn�t lose out due to the six-speed auto. It comes equipped with the Steptronic manual operation, but there�s such a reservoir of torque throughout the gears that it�s not exactly necessary and the brakes are so impressive on this machine that I didn�t miss the engine braking afforded by a manual �box on the most challenging, twisting and unfinished Spanish road. It scoots to 60mph in 6.5 seconds and blasts all the way round to its electronically limited 155mph without breaking its stride. The automatic, petrol-powered 530i is 0.6 seconds slower to break the 60mph mark and this is a lifetime in such similar cars. With this kind of performance, combined with frugality of 35mpg even on a continental thrash and a price tag that starts just the wrong side of �36,500, almost half that of the M5, it�s not just the standard petrol 5-series range that feels threatened by this member of the tractor set. The sad thing is that, when the diesel is this good, the motorsport badge has become nothing more than a gadget-laden status symbol. Some may throw up their hands in indignation, but if you�re the kind of person that really believes you�ll hit the 8250rpm redline in your M5 on a regular basis, then you�re the kind of person that will spend most of their time on buses at the police�s behest. If it were my money, I�d be keeping a fair chunk of it and putting down an order for this car. As for the handling, it�s all good news. Not only does this machine hug the road like the proverbial limpet, refusing to wash out into understeer until pushed well beyond the limits of normal road use, it�s also serious fun at low speeds. With the DSC fully deactivated the 5-Series steers on the throttle. Those 272 horses under the bonnet are more than enough to unstick the rear wheels but, when the rear slides out, it�s so easy to hold you could fiddle with the iDrive system with the redundant spare hand. Fifty-fifty weight balance, achieved with a hybrid body of aluminium and steel in the chassis and thermoplastic body panels, means that despite its 1,660Kg dry weight, the 535d remains a lithe and slinky machine. Active anti-rollbars absorb up to 80 per cent of body sway at lateral forces up to 0.6g, converting hydraulic pressure into torsional strength, which basically means that the harder you lean on this car the harder it tries to stay upright. Although this genuinely does provide sportscar handling without hampering the ride quality, for a truly comfortable ride BMW would have to do away with the run flat tyres. The interior is uncluttered and functional; the cockpit of a Mercedes might be more luxurious but this one that does it for me. Everything is perfectly situated, easy to use and in the right place, and the styling on the inside has pretty much met with universal approval � unlike the flame-surfaced body. The styling argument overshadows any piece of technical excellence to emerge from Bavaria these days. But it�s getting boring and the 5-series is still a sexy car, the only problem is that it has replaced a perfectly proportioned luxury machine. The sport kit, M alloys and Imola red paint job on my test car, combined with the soothing effects of two days in Spain, certainly worked for me, though. Pictures don�t really do justice to the car and each time I see one in the flesh that feeling of grudging acceptance has moved further along the axis towards actually liking the design. The back end certainly isn�t its best side, but from the front, and tarted up with the accessories, the 5 is desirable. On the trip I also drove the impressive 630i -- and we'll be reporting on that car soon -- but for 2,000-mile drive back to England I only wanted the keys to one car. That was the diesel, and that speaks volumes - the days of the tractor are over. Request Brochure Test Drive Best Deals I know this isn't an easy thing to do, but just for now let's ignore the BMW M5. If you're not interested in that car's startling performance - or are not prepared to deal with the compromises which result from it - there is a strong case for saying that the 535d is the ultimate 5-Series. Even if you don't count the M5, the 535d is not the fastest car in the range, nor is it the most expensive. And it has stiff competition from within its own stable, supplied by the 540i and the 550i. But those are petrol cars, and the 535d is a diesel. Its three-litre, six-cylinder, twin-turbo engine is rightly regarded as one of the best in the industry. Its maximum power output is 286bhp, which would have seemed like either a typing error or a ridiculously optimistic figure just a few years ago, though it's less than either the 540i or 550i can manage. Like those cars, though, the 535d can go faster than its limited 155mph top speed. Its 0-62mph time of 6.4 seconds is not far short of what the 540i can manage, and although the 550i is a second quicker it uses vastly more fuel. And in any case, 0-62mph times - which don't relate closely to anything you're likely to do on the public road on a regular basis - are not friendly to diesels; it's how the car performs while it's already moving that matters, and there can be no complaints about the 535d on that score. This is a car which, to say the least of it, is quick enough. The diesel engine is one of many to have benefitted recently from BMW's new EfficientDynamics programme. The cleverest part of this in the 535d is the Intelligent Alternator Control with Brake Energy Regeneration system. To tell the tale simply, the 535d recharges its battery partly through energy recovered during braking and coasting, and the alternator is activated only when needed, which improves performance, fuel economy and CO2 emissions. A win-win-win situation, then. One result of all that is that this large executive car has an official combined fuel consumption figure of over 40mpg. That's impressive in itself, but more so because the 535d is also so quick. Nimble, too. I'm prepared to admit that, on a dry road, I set the traction control warning light flashing a couple of times. I'm less ready to explain what I was doing to make that happen. The point is that the superbly crafted rear end of the 5-Series can deal with 286bhp - and with shovelfuls of torque - without seeming in any way concerned about it. In fact, occupants can feel more stressed than the car does. BMW people quietly admit that the company went the wrong way with ride quality a few years ago, and things are definitely improving, but the 535d (in M Sport form at least) still needs work. It's too jittery, too fussy, and that's a shame considering how comfortable the car is in other respects. As with all other 5-Series models, there is a huge amount of room for passengers at either end, and the seats are splendidly comfortable and supportive. As of the 2007 model year, the driver of a six-speed automatic version (and there is no other kind of 535d) gets a restyled gearlever which, frankly, looks bizarre but sits nicely under the hand. The exterior styling, which drew so much adverse criticism when it was first shown, is not as shocking as it once was, though I have to say I still don't find it attractive. The interior is better, but I don't think the test car's Black Dakota leather upholstery did it any favours. This isn't very black at all - more a dark grey, really - and personally I think it cheapens the look of the interior. If it were my £42,000-plus on the line I think I'd choose a colour that did a better job of reflecting the price. The 535d M Sport is well-equipped as standard. The list price includes Dynamics Stability Control, air-conditioning, cruise control, floor mats (often listed as a £75 option in lesser BMWs) and the effective but still complicated iDrive system which looks after the heating, audio, navigation and communication systems. BMWs offered to the press are often fitted with enough options to add a considerable percentage to the basic price. In this case the "extras" total came to £2475, which doesn't seem so bad when you're paying over £42,000 to start with. The most important option was the set of rear side airbags (£230), the cleverest the lane departure warning system (£350), the most expensive the xenon headlights (£720) and the most annoying the sliding front armrest (£130) - can't they just include that as standard? For a further £280 you can also specify DAB digital radio, which is brilliant when you can get the reception. When you can't you can just switch back to FM (or even AM, if you still bother with that) as normal. I didn't fall in love with the 535d M Sport, but I was impressed by it. It's smooth, fast, relatively economical and brilliant to drive. With a different interior colour and a smoother ride I could be seriously smitten. But it's still the promise of reduced fuel bills that is behind most motorists' switch to the black pump. Choosing an oil-burner is generally a decision you make with your head rather than your heart - although when the BMW 535d arrives here in September, all that could change. Despite what the badge on the car's bootlid says, the newcomer is powered by the same 3.0-litre six-cylinder unit as found in the 530d, albeit with one important difference. Instead of a single turbocharger, it has two. This, plus a new exhaust and remapped electronics, has increased the power by 25 per cent to 272bhp, while torque is up to an incredible 560Nm, most of which is available from a mere 1,500rpm. BMW claims the 535d can cover the sprint from 0-60mph in 6.5 seconds, but from behind the wheel, this new model feels even faster than that figure suggests. As well as improving performance, the dual-stage turbocharger minimises lag - a common complaint of most oil-burners. At the slightest touch of the throttle, the 535d instantly charges for the horizon. With supercar levels of thrust available throughout the rev range, there is no need to kickdown the six-speed automatic gearbox when overtaking. Unusually for the firm that claims to build the ultimate driving machine, a manual transmission will not be available on this car. But that's no bad thing, as the self-shifter is well suited to the high-torque powerplant. Engineers say they have done nothing to improve the 3.0-litre unit's refinement, but the twin-turbo motor feels smoother and sounds quieter than that of its less powerful 530d sibling, even when revved to the 5,000rpm red line. In fact, this car is so effortlessly quick that it's all too easy to find yourself travelling at a faster speed than you had intended. And it's this devastating pace, combined with the 5-Series' class-leading handling, which will make the 535d appeal to performance fans, as well as those seeking reduced fuel bills. However, with prices starting from ΂£36,750 - that's ΂£4,850 more than the similarly equipped 530d SE - this could be the first oil-burning model drivers will buy with their heart rather than their head.
