The 6 Series name reappeared with the BMW E63 chassis beginning in the 2004 model year. The E24 borrowed heavily from contemporary 5-series cars (E12, later E28). The CS 3.0 was almost changed by adding a few centimeters in height to make it easier for customers to get into the car. However, Bob Lutz rebelled against the decision and rough drafted an alternative version that soon became the 6 series.[2] Production started in March 1976 with two models: the 630CS and 633CSi. Originally the bodies were manufactured by Karmann, but production was later taken in-house to BMW. In July 1978 a more powerful variant, the 635CSi, was introduced (for the time being not available in North America and Japan) that featured as standard a special close-ratio 5-speed gearbox and a black rear spoiler. In 1979 the carburetted 630CS was replaced with the 628CSi; this car had a fuel injected 2.8L engine taken from the BMW 528i. In 1982 (Europe) and 1983 (US), the E24 changed slightly, with an improved interior and slightly modified exterior. At the same time, the 635CSi received a new engine, a slightly smaller-bored and longer-stroked 3430 cc six to replace the former 3453 cc engine and became available with a wide-ratio 5-speed or an automatic. E24s produced after June 1987 came with new, ellipsoid headlamps which projects beam more directly onto road surface (newly introduced E32 series also sporting them).[3] The sleeker European bumpers were also discontinued. Previous cars had either a European-standard bumper or a larger, reinforced bumper to meet the US standard requiring bumpers to withstand impact at 5 mph (8 km/h) without damage to safety-related components. 1989 was the last year for the E24 with production stopping in April. The E24 was supplanted by the considerably heavier, more complex, and more exclusive E31. [edit] M version BMW M 635 CSi engine BMW Motorsport introduced M 635 CSi in Europe at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1983. It is essentially an E24 powered by the powerplant of the BMW M1 - the M88 (286 PS (210 kW; 282 hp)). Most of the cars were equipped with special metric 415 mm diameter wheels requiring Michelin TRX tires. A catalyzed, lower compression ratio version of the car with the S38 engine (260 PS (190 kW; 260 hp)) was introduced in the U.S. in 1987. All M6 cars came standard with a 25% rear limited slip differential. U.S. models included additional comforts that were usually optional on models sold in Europe such as Nappa leather power seats and a dedicated rear A/C unit with a center beverage chiller. This meant that in North America and Japan, BMW offered the following models:[5] 1988 US version BMW M6 (note 5mph bumper) 630CSi (MY 1977 through 1978½) 633CSi (MY 1978½ through 1984) 635CSi (MY 1985 through 1989) L6 (MY 1987 - Luxury Edition 635CSi NA-only) M6 (MY 1987 through 1989) In 1977, the 6er was released in the US as the 630CSi. This was a fuel-injected version of the carburetted 630CS available elsewhere. Its 3-litre engine developed 176 horsepower (131 kW) and 185 ft·lbf (251 N·m) of torque. In mid-model year 1978 the 630CSi was replaced by the 633CSi. US/Japan specification 633CSi cars had the M30 3.2 litre 181 hp (135 kW) engine until 1984. In 1985 the car was renamed 635CSi, displacement was increased to 3.4 litres and horsepower increased slightly to 182 hp (136 kW). The big difference, however, was torque. Whereas the 3.2 litre had 195 ft·lbf (264 N·m) at 4,000 rpm, the 3.4 litre powerplant managed 214 ft·lbf (290 N·m) at 4,000 rpm. From model year 1983, North American and Japanese versions benefitted from the technical revisions and changes to the interior introduced elsewhere in spring or summer 1982. Its chassis was now based on the E28 and no longer on the E12. The front and rear suspension was also revised. Later a self-levelling rear suspension was added to the 635 CSi and M6 features list in 1988.[5] The US received its own M series E24 in 1987 called the M6. The S38 powerplant found in the US model had several modifications from the M88 powerplant in the European model, most notably: a double row timing chain, modified cam tray, different valve lengths, a slightly different cam profile, less elaborate exhaust manifold (rather than full headers), Bosch X5DC copper spark plugs (instead of Bosch Silver plugs on the M88) and the introduction of an oxygen sensor for the EFI. These changes coupled with the introduction of a catalytic converter for emission regulations reduced the output to 256 hp (191 kW). The US model also included a variety of options usually of which were optional on European models, to include: heated power seats, sport tuned self-levelling rear suspension, A/C cooled ice box between the rear seats, A/C vents for rear seat occupants, sunshade for rear occupants and an 8 speaker "premium" sound system. In 1988, the US E24 was now available with the newest version of the M30, the 3.4L (first used in the E32 735i). Even though the intake manifold states 3.5 it's technically a 3.4 (3430cc) like the previous 3.4. This engine had an increased compression ratio, and updated Motronics/DME. The result was 208 hp (155 kW) and 225 ft·lbf (305 N·m) torque. The new E24 chassis was safer than that of the E9, meeting new United States federal crash and rollover standards. The original 6-Series was first launched in August 1976. This car had a 3210 cc engine with 197 PS (145 kW). In 1980 debuted the 635CSi, with a 3453 cc SOHC, 218 PS (160 kW) engine and a top speed of 222 km/h (138 mph). The 635CSi could reach 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.4 seconds. A luxury version, known as the L6 arrived in 1987 with leather headliner and trim and other accoutrements. In 1983 BMW took the M88/3, a modified version of the M88/1 from the BMW M1 and put it in the E24 chassis, creating the M635CSi, or M6. This had a DOHC 24-valve 3453 cc, 286 PS (210 kW) engine, taken from the BMW M1 with a top speed of 255 km/h (158 mph). The M6 reached 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds. The M6 also had improved suspension, brakes, and a close-ratio manual transmission. The new 6-Series was introduced with a 4.4 L 333 PS (245 kW) V8 engine for the 645Ci. In 2004, a more affordable inline six-cylinder engine was introduced in the 630i. This was soon followed by a convertible model (the E64), the first 6-Series with a removable top. In 2006, the 645Ci was replaced by the 650i, with a larger displacement (4.8 L) and 367 PS (270 kW). The range-topping M6 arrived in late 2005, using the same V10 engine as the M5, with 507 PS (373 kW). In 2007 the 635d (Twin Turbo 3.0L Diesel) was introduced with 286 PS (210 kW) and 430 ft·lbf (580 N·m) which comprehensively outguns the 630i with the added bonus of 41mpg, the 635d Convertible (released shortly afterwards) was described by Autocar as "the best 6-series of the lot". The U.S. and Canadian markets received only the V8 and V10-engined 6-Series. Transmission choices are either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic "Steptronic". For the high-performance M6, the 7-speed Getrag SMG III single-clutch semi-automatic transmission was initially the only transmission but it later became optional a year afterward when a 6-speed manual unit was added as the base transmission. The SMG III also was optional on V8-engined 6-Series (645Ci/650i) until after the 2008 model year.[2] In the 2010 model year, the M6 was the second-most expensive BMW sold in the U.S. after the flagship 760Li ($137,000), with an MSRP of $108,150 for the convertible and $102,350 for the coupé, overlapping with the ActiveHybrid 750Li and 750i (at $106,200 and $102,300, respectively), and considerably more than the M5 sedan at $85,700. The 2010 650i convertible and coupé, at $85,550 and $78,450, respectively, are also priced near the top of the BMW lineup, comparable to the 750Li and 750i ($85,900 and $82,000).[3] In the U.S. the M6 had one of the largest residual value drops at 19%, as it had little if any changes since its 2006 introduction, its $102,350 base price which put it in Porsche territory, and as it has lost attention to flashier models like the Audi R8.[4] BMW officially announced the end of production of the M6 Coupé and M6 Convertible line. The car will be powered by two petrol engines. Aircraft engines were the first thing to be produced followed by motorcycles and then automobiles - vehicles that have been setting milestones in the area of motorsport from the very start. Convinced that the generation of coupes for the late seventies and eighties needed to be a six cylinder, high-tech, efficient yet luxurious, the image had to be uniquely its own. Able to withstand both the compulsory and extensive crash tests necessary for legislations in other countries, the body of the newest coupe had to be designed strong enough. Considered to be a worthy successor, the E24 went through fairly few body changes during its production run. 86,000 models of the E24 were produced during its production run that lasted until April 6, 1989. In 1977 the assembly of the E24 was brought to BMW. The E24 initial models were the 630 CS which had a 2986cc six-cylinder with a Solex 4A1 carburettor capable of 184bhp at 5800 rpm and the 633 CSi with a 3210cc six-cylinder fuel injected engine that was capable of producing 200 bhp at 5500 rpm. In the US, the 633 CSi was dubbed the 630 CSi. The most popular model was the 635, introduced in 1978, and produced as the 635CSi which featured an available 5-speed gearbox. Other earlier E24 models included the 628, 630 and 633. The 628 CSi was introduced in 1979, at the same time the 630 CS was withdrawn from the model range. The 628 model was produced until 1987 and was a budget model for the European market. The 633 CSi featured the first generation of DME, and ABS brakes were available as an option. Now the German manufacturer has added frugality to performance with the BMW 635d – a diesel version of the car which returns more than 40mpg. We tested the BMW 635d to find out whether it lived up to the billing. 1. Looks 9/10 The BMW 6 Series was a thing of beauty when launched in 2004 and minimal cosmetic changes in 2007’s facelift has kept this long-bonneted lookers’ appeal intact. The most visible changes are to the re-sculpted rear. This includes a revised boot lid design, integrated spoiler and alterations to the light clusters (these have been implemented at the front too). It’s subtle but turns heads. 2. Looks inside 8/10 It’s a Gran Tourer so it needs to deliver driving fun coupled with the ability to eat up the miles – and crucial to that is a liveable interior. The front seats are roomy and comfortable with the simple information display and control stack kept uncluttered thanks to navigation and entertainment controls housed in the iDrive system located between the front seat passengers. Critics claim this system is hard-to-use and it certainly requires a little time to get the hang of. But once mastered it is pretty simple and helps reduce the amount of time you’re looking away from the road. The best solution would be to have a play with it in the showroom to find out whether it suits you. 3. Practicality 8/10 It’s certainly more fun in the front but the rear seats of this three door coupe are easy to get to and offer a reasonable amount of room. The boot is a decent size and low and wide access make loading and unloading easy. 4. Ride and Handling 8/10 It’s a big car which offers the kind of drive which makes you want to take it out just for the sake of it. Fast and agile through corners, the 6 Series delivers on its driver duties. And in-cabin comfort means long drives shouldn’t take too much of a toll, though the ride is on the firm side. 5. Performance 9/10 The model we drove – the BMW 635d Coupe – is a superb addition to a previously all-petrol line-up. It uses the six-cylinder 3.0-litre diesel engine already found in the 3 and 5 Series and can produce 286bhp to power the car from 0-62mph in 6.3 seconds. It also delivers masses of pulling power, 427lb/ft – 95 per cent of which is available at just 1,500rpm. The rest of the range offers a choice of six, eight and ten cylinder models in the shape of the BMW630i, BMW 650i and the flagship 507bhp M6 with its 4.6 seconds 0-62mph time. All models boast an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph. The diesel option makes masses of sense (see running costs) and doesn’t compromise on the ability. Power is delivered through a six speed gearbox and ours, like that specified by most buyers, was the automatic version which felt very natural once we became accustomed to the gear positions. View our BMW 6 Series slide show 6. Running Costs 7/10 The BMW 635d Coupe combines great performance with more economical motoring than the rest of the range can match. It’ll return in excess of 40mpg and – thanks to emissions of 183g/km (190g/km for the convertible) – falls outside the highest tax bracket. This, says BMW, enables the car to be driven a “theoretical” 629 miles between fill-ups. EfficientDynamics technologies work to improve the car’s aerodynamic qualities and regenerate energy from braking to improve this economy. 7. Reliability 7/10 The BMW 6 Series has been through one facelift since its 2004 launch and figures are as yet unavailable for its reliability. But this is a very well-put together, well-finished car which suggests problems will be few and far between. 8. Safety 8/10 BMW’s Dynamic Stability Control is supplemented by five additional safety features: brake drying, brake pre-tensioning, soft-stop, hill-start assistant, brake fade compensation. Anti-Whiplash head restraints have been added as standard. No EuroNCAP rating but driver, side and passenger airbags are all included. 9. Equipment 7/10 The BMW 635d and 630i are supplied with 17” alloy wheels and leather upholstery as standard. Lane departure warning system is standard on all but the 630i model, on which it is a £350 option. Standard equipment on our 635d included: Dynamic Stability Control, heated, electric front seats, start/stop button and iDrive. Options include 18-inch or 19-inch alloy wheels, Head-up display and Digital Radio. 10. X-Factor 8/10 Great to drive, fairly practical, and a good long-distance runner: but if we had to pick one thing about this car it would be appearance. Subtle but with the ability to keep the petrol-heads’, erm, heads turning as you drive past. A good case for best-looking BMW on the market now.
