BMW did do a recall and fix most/many free of charge. On the open road, you can average around 28-32 mpg. In town, mine has plummeted to about 10mpg! An average of London traffic and open road driving returned a 21 mpg average. Not that bad, seeing as my 2-litre Hyundai returned 19mpg on the OPEN road. The boot is HUGE! I have a double pushchair for my two kids. It used to fill he Hyundai's boot widthways. In this ......behind it. Then, you still have 1 third of the boot left, which is ample for the weekly shopping trip. The car is astoundingly good to drive. Once in motion, very few cars can beat it. These little boy racers in their hatchback rubbish cannot compete. Golf GTI's cannot keep up! I have even given a Porsche Boxter a hiding! About two weeks ago, I bought a 1995 740iL with 153000 miles on. I've always wanted a 3 series, but a salesman in South Africa convinced me to try a V8 530i. When I moved to England, I NEEDED to own another V8 engined car. Because I have kids, the huge 740iL seemed a good choice.First the bad. The first night I had it, it lost all its power steering fluid. The second day, it overheated in traffic in London 3 times. A week later, I again lost p/s fluid. It is going in for repairs tomorrow, which leaves me nervous, due to the high cost of parts. If you are OK with second hand parts or reconditioned parts, you can save 740iL bootloads of cash ;)Now the good. The car is stupefyingly good! I bought it for £2000. That is two thousand pounds. Go ahead; look for a new hatch back for that price. True, I need to spend maybe 100 - 200 pounds on it and possibly more in future, but that is OK. I bought the car and sold my Hyundai estate. The biggest concern is safety. My family and I are cocooned in a 5.1x2.1 metre luxury saloon. It has double-glazing on all side windows. The front windscreen is UV resistant. The rear windscreen has an electric sunblind. I leave it up all the time, as it reduces glare at night and it keeps the temperature down during the day.My car is simply gorgeous - to me anyway. It is metallic burgundy. A nice feature of big, 'expensive' BMW's is that they have laminate plastic, covering the paintwork. That means that the car's paint is pretty tough and doesn't get chipped easy, like when they're gritting the roads in winter. It has front and rear park sensors. Park sensors are a worthless gimmick in a Vauxhall Astra, but necessary as oxygen on a 5.1 metre car! The other day I came out of Tesco and saw a smart car parked next to me. The Smart 's nose was level with my car's nose. It ended before my driver's door even ended. Then there's still another 2/3 of car left. I laughed so loud when I saw it.The interior is even more wonderful than the exterior. For starters, there are 21 lights in the car! 2 in the boot, 19 in the car itself. The rear has 4 lights (2 for ambient lighting, 2 for reading). There are also 2 lights in each door. A red one so that motorists can see the enormous doors are open, and 'puddle lights'. The puddle lights illuminate the floor under each door, so at least you can see where you're stepping out of the car. The rest of the lights are in the front. 2 lights each in the vanity sun visors for both driver and passenger. 2x reading lights and one ambient light. This car can be bright at night! The rear legroom is astounding. I am a big bloke and I can walk on the floor between the front and rear seats! The rear seats in my car can recline and they have lumbar support. This is not always true in all 740iLs. There are also cup holders in the rear, as well as air separate air conditioning controls. The front is amazing. The front passenger has a front airbag. Later models also had side and rear airbags. I love buttons and things. This car has a great number of buttons to press. It has a TV with onboard computer. The onboard computer functions include outside temperature display, 2x fuel consumption indicators, a stopwatch, range, distance to destination, speed limit (if exceeded an audible sound is made), and estimated time of arrival. It can be set to display in various units, such as miles, kilometres, degree F and C etc. The radio has DSP (Digital Sound Processor). The quality from the 10 speakers invokes goose bumps! I love Vivaldi or Josh Groban on my car's sound system. The front has 2 air conditioners. Each front occupant can set their own climate control temperature as well as fan speed! The car also has traction control as well as electronic dampening control (EDC). EDC is a system that varies the suspension stiffness. So, your car can either drive and feel like a cruise ship, or the suspension can be set to sport mode and feel like a sport car!My steering wheel has 12 buttons - something I've always wanted. They control the onboard telephone (which only wants to work with UK Vodafone sim cards), radio volume, CD and station skip buttons, cruise control buttons, as well as heated steering wheel and air circulation buttons. The rear-view mirror has some chemical substance that continuously varies the darkness in accordance to outside light, to prevent lights from cars behind you from bothering you. The seat can adjust in fourteen different ways. You simply find a comfortable seating position, adjust the mirrors, steering wheel and store it. You can recall up to 3 different positions from the memory buttons in the driver door. This makes life so easy when your wife drives it. In my old 5, we always used to adjust seats and could never get comfortable. Not in this car! The doors have legions of storage space and lidded hidey bins. The front also has 2 cup holders, although mine are broken. The 7 series range up to 1998 (I think) had notoriously poor quality cup holders. You can buy new, improved ones, but keep your original wood trim.Very few of the 7 series range ever had manual gearboxes. It is better that way, after all, who wants to own a German Luxury saloon and have to row the thing (Manual gear changes). The auto box is 5 speed and continuously adaptive. It 'senses' what driving mood you're in (relaxed, sporty, traffic) and adjusts shift patterns accordingly. The 95 4-litre V8, M60 engine blocks had a problem with the cylinder wall lining. It was made from Nikasil. The Nikasil supposedly made the car run more smoothly, but the high sulphur content in petrol eroded the Nikasil, causing compression loss. Best check before you buy to see if your V8 has been sorted out in this regard. In this car, it can go in lengthways fully and leave space behind it. In town or on the open road, it feels no bigger to drive than a Ford Fiesta. Only in parking lots do you find the size a disadvantage, but the parking sensors and a little bit of driving skill makes it fairly easy to park. The outside mirrors fold against the car once parked. I would wholeheartedly recommend you buy a car like this. Be prepared to spend a little bit of money on one as old as this. In the end, no car is 100% reliable 100% of the time. But, for the money I spent, 2000 quid, I doubt you can get much better!Go ahead, test drive one and let me know what you think. It is a fantastic car. ...less ElenarMT 28.11.2005 (29.11.2005) Ciao members have rated this car review on average: very helpful Review of BMW 740Li Value for Money Road Handling Comfort Features Fuel consumption Looks We have lift off !!! It appeared first in June 1994 on the cover of the Austrian car magazine "Autorevue" at the occasion of the appearance of the then new BMW 7 series. At this time I was driving a six year old 530i, so a new car was due and I was impressed of the various fantastic features of the new 740iA – A for a new 5-speed automatic transmission, which I have been longing for years since I had made quite a few satisfactory experiences when driving different rental cars during holidays in the United States, so I was not going to miss out on this one with our next car.My loving wife – usually "sitting on our money" – had gained some from an unexpected legacy and was therefore quite willing to put up part of it in favor of the bigger car: the 740i to his smaller brother 540i, her only requirement was that it had to be dark blue inside out….which I can easily do with while making a quantum leap in technology.A special test drive on Viennas oldest cobblestones – yes, right where Harry Lime used to do his blackmarket deals – convinced us of the outstanding technical qualities of the new 7 series. 80 kilos of insulation material secure the ultimate smooth ride on even the worst surface imaginable. Acceleration (7 secs!) is "supported" by 286 HP out of the splendid eight cylinder engine (sipping 11-14 litres of 95 octane Eurosuper/100 km), the transmissions S-program adds to safe passing not only on the highspeed (German) "Autobahn", but also on normal roads, where it feels extremely comfortable to shorten such manoeuvres to the minimum. One would never believe how easy it is to handle such a big luxury limousine of two tons! Even in fast driven bends the wheel suspension as a class of its own together with 235/60 ZR 16 tires stick the car to the ground and the tilting is not uncomfortable – not even for the back seats. In this context I have to admit that winter driving is quite a challenge (despite of ABS and ASC) demanding smooth pressure on the accelerator.Deceleration was a vital point in our considerations and a bad braking experience with the reference Mercedes S-class car settled the question which car to order. The dealer made a generous offer for our old BMW and we took off with a € 60.000 contract of sale. Eight weeks later we picked up the new 740iA not before getting a thorough instruction an handling the manifold buttons, levers, display informations and such…The interior was an orgy of blue: (heated) leather seats, thick carpets, very little synthetic material, then a multifunctional black leather steering wheel with one gadget I like best: a little button that goes with the automatic speed control and lets you accelerate/decelerate with a single movement of the right thumb. The air condition works efficiently and even after hours parked on hot summer days it takes only moments to restore a comfortable climate, the on-board sound system with 8 speakers is another highlight, part of which can be hidden behind a wood panel that runs across the entire dashboard.A sufficient anti-theft device is controlled with a radio signal from the car-keys, when activated a little red light starts to flash behind the windscreen.Even after seven years and a (moderate) mileage of just over 80000 km there is a short list of flaws: an electric window at the drivers side quitted service just recently, after four years a battery replacement was necessary and the radiator pump broke once: this was some experience, because it happened on a Sunday afternoon, the car was towed to a local BMW dealer, the pump was replaced with a new one in an instant and cost us just the price of the material – that is BMW standard when their rare breakdowns occur… Why do I write about a car you can´t buy new any more? Well, due to the introduction of the brand new 735/745 series recently you might want to look for used ones – they should be quite affordable from now on. ...less herbb 09.11.2001 Ciao members have rated this car review on average: very helpful Review of BMW 740i Value for Money Road Handling Comfort Features Fuel consumption Looks BMW 740i as a second-hand car Advantages: Comfort, power, luxuryDisadvantages: Unreliable, gas-guzzler, expensive to maintain/fix I bought a 1995 BMW 740i less than a year ago for £2,690 in a private sale. Very little service history but looked in good nick and price was lower than the official valuation of these cars of this age. Since purchase I have had to visit a mechanics at least a half-dozen times, for amongst other things: 1. Steering wheel tremor (due to buckled alloys). 2. Power-steering fluid leak. 3. Air-con not working. During one visit the key no longer started ......from BMW - £81 plus some terrible customer service (from BMW Nine Elms in Battersea, London). Now recently it overheated as there was mysteriously no fluid left in the radiator hence yet another visit to the mechanics is due. There's no doubting that these cars are fantastic when they run OK - lots of power under-foot, smooth and easy handling and a luxurious interior but the over-complicated nature of all the electrics make it a mine-field for ... algis100 19.07.2006 · Read full review Ciao members have rated this car review on average: somewhat helpfulReview of BMW 740i Value for MoneyRoad HandlingComfortFeaturesFuel consumptionLooks Similar reviews » Reviews which might be of interest for "BMW 740i" The BMW 740i is a great car Advantages: Sleek, PowerfulDisadvantages: Fuel costs It has the acceleration of a nippy sports car (0-60 in 5.5 seconds or so), and it has the style of a luxury car. Leather interiors come as standard, and there are tempting options to upgrade to 6-cd changer etc. The 740i tends to be rather a fuel guzzler, and this is especially so when driving in towns. Out on the motorway it's a dream to drive. The top speed is approx 150 mph, not that you should be testing it out! Also has driver and passenger airbags and a built in first aid kit. Has a relatively good turning circle, but there is no getting away from the fact it IS a big car. ... kenigma 18.02.2001 · Read full review Ciao members have rated this car review on average: somewhat helpfulReview of BMW 750Li My first diesel and was pleasantly surprise! The car is one year old,i never buy new always nearly new. That way you will get the benefit of all the optional extras plus any depriciation that occurred. My 320d SE Touring came with leather, rain sensor, xenon light, automatic ,6 cd and headlight washer. All these options cost around £4000,which would have boosted a new car price to around £29,000! I brought it for £22,950. A saving of nearly £6000. The automatic does slow the car down abit, but if you switch it to the steptonic mode it really goes. It is worth investing in a computer cable for your laptop for this car. You can reset the fault lights, diagnose your own faults reducing garage bills, and remap the on board computer. You do not have to be a computer genius either. In conclusion, I have had the BMW 740i & 535i, the Mercedes 500L, the Volvo 940/960 and the Jaguar XJ6 4.0L but this car feel and drives far superior to them all. Research - BMW Search engine visitors - To enter the main site click HERE Go LPG Research - BMW BMW 740 4.4 litre V8 goes all economical! An awesome beast. Go LPG! were asked to teach it another trick..... It was about time we turned our attention to BMW's. Mike Smith of Lucas Electronics asked us if we could convert the mighty 4.4 litre BMW V8 as fitted in his 740. We advised him that whilst some cars have been converted using single point mixers, Romano multi point sequential injection equipment would make a proper job of it. We were not wrong. The car gives performance equal to (and slightly better than!) petrol operation. Most of the electronics were easy to stash in the existing ECU boxes and the tank made little impact on the boot. All in all, a very pleasing and worthwhile conversion for both us and the owner. Want your BMW converted? Read on! Here are some pictures of Mike's converted 740 The 400mm 90 litre cylinder fits like it was made for the car. The remaining boot space will still accomodate two large suitcases whilst holding 74 litres (15.8 imp. gals) of nice cheap LPG. A filler position was found on the rear bumper, forward of the dumb iron (impact absorber). It can just be seen on the bottom of the bumper around the centre of the picture. This site gives reasonable rear impact protection and places the filler within easy reach. The 7 series bumper is particularly awkward for filler mounting and this is the only position that will conform to current LPGA requirements (See 'Fillers' for more information) A plumber's nightmare - The two LPG reducers and associated pipework are mounted on the nearside inner wing. Not wholly ideal for impact protection but the system is fully protected by solenoids to shut of the gas if a pipe is severed, and what other space was available? None! A good fuel choice switch position was crucial to the finish of this job. We sought one that allowed a good view of the LPG gauge but not stuck in the driver's face on night journeys (can be annoying!). Eventually Mike found his own site, choosing to have it mounted in a blank in the left hand side of the lower portion of the centre console. It was a good choice. The switch looks like original equipment and fulfils all of the criteria.. Much later (2006) we found an alternative switch postion. On the 2000 onwards 7 series cars the eariler switch position (shown above) is not available. A car with a concealed and removable towbar gave us the opportunity to mount the filler under the removable towbar flap ( the square filler cover can be seen on the right of this picture). We now offer this as an alternative filler site, although the extra labour of removing the rear bumper, cutting out the flap aperture etc. and refitting the bumper adds around £100 to the whole job. Also the car must be supplied with a BMW towbar cover/flap in readiness (cost less than £20 from the main agents). . Your 740 or other BMW V8........ Pricing - The 740 V8 conversion is very specialised. A lot of research went into it. You won't find many firms offering this conversion, and even less getting it right. We have converted several similar cars and have all the data recorded to do more. Romano 'N' system multi point sequential gas injection equipment is installed, fed by a 90 litre cylinder tank. The reasoning behind our choice of conversion equipment is fully explained in the item 'What type of conversion is best for my car?' All owners report savings in fuel cost of at least 50%, some above that if driven carefully. It is very hard to tell when the car is running on gas as performance is practically identical to that of Petrol. The conversion takes 5 days to complete (including up to 100 miles of fuel mapping and road testing) at a cost of £1950 inclusive for pre 1999 vehicles and £2000 inclusive for post 1999 vehicles. We give 12 months parts and labour warranty and issue an insurance certificate with every conversion. Before we can give a price estimate and book a conversion slot for this model you must read this item on NIKASIL lined engines. 5th April 2005 Time moves on............. Since we converted Mike's car he has covered 55,000 miles on LPG. He saved the whole cost of his conversion a long time ago and reports that he is now close to saving a further £3000 on fuel. Mike has not suffered any problems with the car or the conversion, but recently he bought the car back to us for attention - His firm had moved, he wanted more range so we fitted an extra spare wheel tank for him. Now Mike's car carries over 130 litres of LPG from one fill. Contact us to arrange the conversion of your vehicle using the latest Romano 'N' multi point injection system (Link is currently available only when using Outlook Express browsers).
