Introduced in 1977, it is BMW's flagship car and is only available as a sedan. In 1992, 3.0 L and 4.0 L V8 engines were added to the lineup (730i and 740i). All models were also available in a stretched 'L' version, which had 10 cm of extra legroom for the rear passengers. This was last 7 series generation to be available exclusively with gasoline engines (in Europe). The engine variants in Europe were 725tds, 728i, 730i, 730d, 735i, 740i (4.0 and 4.4 L), 740d and 750i (with a 5.4 L V12 322 bhp (240 kW; 326 PS) engine, as was used in the Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph). In America, the models were sold as the 740i, 740iL and 750iL. The 740i and 740iL shared the same 4.0 L V8 engine in model year 1995, but the next year the V8 grew to 4.4L while stated power stayed at 282 hp (210 kW), though torque grew from 295 to 310 lb·ft (400 to 420 N·m). Then again coinciding with the 1999 facelift, the V8's power again stayed the same but now torque grew further to 324 lb·ft (439 N·m), due to new variable valve timing. The 740iL is essentially a long-wheelbase 740i (the "L" is from the German word for long, "lang"). The considerably rarer 5.4 L V12-powered 750iL was only available as a long-body; there was no E38 750i in the US lineup. The 750iL was BMW's flagship sedan. It was featured in the 1997 film Tomorrow Never Dies as the car driven by James Bond (Pierce Brosnan).[10] An E38 735i is the feature car in the 2002 film The Transporter, starring Jason Statham. It dropped the manual transmission entirely. The E65/E66/E67/E68 7 Series featured BMW's first of a kind iDrive system, consisting of a video screen in the dashboard and a controller mounted on the center console that is used in a similar way to a computer mouse. Using a system of eight menus, most of the car's climate, audio, navigation, suspension and communication settings are controlled via iDrive. However, the system has been criticized by many automotive writers as being too complex and not intuitive enough. "Active" Seat continuous passive motion technology was made standard equipment on the 750/760 models and included in the Luxury Seating Package with heated and ventilated seats for driver and front passenger on the 745 models. The car was available in thirteen variants[11]—of those, 11 were on sale in Europe, with five available in the U.S. since diesel models were not available there. [edit] 2006 2006–2008 BMW 750i (US) The 7 Series was facelifted for 2006 with a restyled front and rear and a larger range of engines, the N62B48. The twice-refreshed 7 Series sports a new taillight and reduced height for the trunk lid. The front headlight and the kidney grille was also raised somewhat, as well as a new front air dam and fog light assembly. This limitation does not however apply to the GCC specification models. The 4.4 L V8 was replaced by a 4.8 L unit producing 367 hp (274 kW) and 361 lb·ft (489 N·m) . The new model with the enlarged engine is now known as 750i and 750Li (for the long wheel-base model). The 750i and 750Li replace the 745i and 745Li in all world markets. The 745d, powered by a 4.4 L turbodiesel producing 329 hp (245 kW) has replaced the 740d. As before, a six-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic is standard on all models. [edit] 2007 In 2007 the 7 series received minor updates both inside and out. On the exterior, new wheel designs were made available and power folding mirrors became standard. On the inside, an update to the iDrive system (but still no RTTI: Real Time Traffic Info) was also made standard. 2007 also saw the installation of an auxiliary input for connecting an audio source. Engine options remained the same as with the 2006 model, but the short wheelbase 760i, was no longer available for the North American market. [edit] Hydrogen 7 BMW plans to offer a car that runs on both petrol and hydrogen, to be called the Hydrogen 7. Since the infrastructure for refueling a hydrogen fueled engine is not widely available, the V12 engine also runs on petrol. Drivers will be able to switch what fuel they are using with the push of a button.[15] However, only 100 units have been built up to now for a limited edition. For example, the mayor of Munich, Christian Ude, received one of them. BMW has also developed a newer, more efficient hydrogen combustion engine, now on par with some of the most efficient diesel engines.[citation needed] [edit] High Security Mexican built high security 750-Li in service with the Mexican Federal District Police. BMW also built armoured versions of the 7 series vehicles.[16] The models have protection levels VR6/VR7. Security features include laminated windows, carbon fibre reinforced armour plating, under body armour, emergency front windscreen exit, lowered door windows, run flat tires. [edit] Self-parking system BMW has developed a parking-assist technology that can automatically park the car while the driver stands outside and watch as the internal robotics park it using a combination of sensors. A prototype of the system has been completed and was recorded using a BMW 730i. The F01/F02 heralded the introduction of the ZF 8-speed automatic transmission. Five variants are showcased at debut, the 750Li, the 740Li, the 750i, the 740i and the 730d. Numerous engines also power the 7 Series worldwide. BMW offers diesel, straight 6, V8 and V12 motors. An all-aluminum 3.0-liter straight-six cylinder diesel engine produces 245 hp (183 kW; 248 PS). The peak torque figure of 540 N·m (400 lb·ft) comes in at 1,750 rpm up through 3,000 rpm. Its 194g/km emission figure is class-leading for conventionally powered luxury cars, as is its 38.7 mpg[clarification needed] fuel consumption figure.[17] BMW switched from a MacPherson strut front suspension to a double wishbone design for improved handling. The 760Li will be equipped with a twin-turbocharged V12 producing 544 horsepower, which will propel the car from 0 to 62 miles per hour in 4.6 seconds.[21][22] In 2010, all-wheel-drive (BMW xDrive) became available on the 7-series. The BMW Concept 7 Series ActiveHybrid was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October 2008.[23] In August 2009 BMW announced the production versions of the ActiveHybrid 7, together with BMW ActiveHybrid X6. The 2011 ActiveHybrid 7 is a mild hybrid and features a 0.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack.[24] The electric motor is combined with BMW’s 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 and new 8-speed automatic transmission to accelerate from 0 – 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds.[25] Estimated EPA fuel economy is 17 miles per US gallon (14 L/100 km; 20 mpg-imp) city and 26 miles per US gallon (9 L/100 km; 31 mpg-imp) for highway, which represents almost an 18% improvement over the non-hybrid 750i/Li.[25] U.S. sales began in June 2010 with a base MSRP price of $103,125 for the ActiveHybrid 7 and $107,025 for the long wheelbase ActiveHybrid 7L. It replaced the BMW E32 in 1995 and itself was replaced by the BMW E65/E66 for the 2002 model year. The E38 models were offered with either a five-speed automatic or manual transmission; 730d, 740d, 740i/iL, and 750i/iL had a 5-speed ZF automatic standard. The engine variants in Europe were 725tds, 728i, 730i, 730d, 735i, 740i (4.0 and 4.4 L), 740d and 750i. In the Americas, the models were sold as the 740i, 740iL and 750iL. The 740i/iL were powered by a 4.4 L V8 engine. The base prices in 2001 were US$62,900 for the 740i, US$66,900 for the 740iL and US$92,100 for the 750iL. The considerably rarer 5.4 L V12 was BMW's flagship vehicle, with a 5.4 L 322 bhp (240 kW) engine, also shared by the Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph. V8 and V12 cars had long-wheelbase variants, with the "L" added to the designation. A rare European executive long-wheelbase limousine model was also produced, called the BMW L7, available as both 740iL (4.4 L V8) and 750iL (5.4 L V12) variants. Protection Line light-armored vehicles were built from 2000–2001, again utilizing the 740iL and 750iL platforms, and cost US$99,100 and US$124,400, respectively. These models included body armor, bullet-resistant glass and run-flat tires. Features of the E38 7 Series included high-pressure headlight washers, auto-leveling xenon HID headlamps, power moonroof, a sound system with 14 speakers and four subwoofers as well as 6-disc CD changer, onboard satellite navigation (1994-1996 MKI based on the VDO-Dayton Carin system, 1997-2000 MKII based on the Phillips system with separate Trimble Navigation receiver, 2001 MKIII based on the Phillips system with internal Trimble Navigation receiver. The E38 7 Series never had the factory DVD-ROM based Navigation system [3] although upgrading to this system is a simple process) and rain-sensing wipers. Other features included an automatic climate control system with separate controls for the driver and passenger, a three-position memory system for the driver’s seat, safety-belt height, new steering wheel and outside mirrors. Front-seat side airbags and a Head Protection System (HPS) were also standard. The 750iL featured an all-leather interior with burl walnut trim, while the sport model featured Sports seats and "Vavona" wood trim . The continuous-motion Active Comfort Seat technology was introduced in 1998 to improve comfort and reduce fatigue for the driver and front passenger. When the E38 was phased out in 2001 to make way for the new E65, sales of E38s increased noticeably in the car's final months of production as people moved to buy the car before it was replaced. The E65's radical styling and iDrive was not initially well-received by consumers, so used E38s increased in value as demand increased. Also contributing to the E38's continued popularity was its appearance in several films such as Tomorrow Never Dies, The Transporter, and The Game. The E38 740i featured in the BMW Film Ambush, even though it was the only featured car in the series to be replaced the following year. Initial production E38s were available with either a 2.5 L Turbodiesel I6 3.0L or 4.0 L M60 V8 or the 5.4 L M73 V12 engine. US Model Range includes the 740i, 740iL and 750iL. 1995 E38 used an aluminium block with Nikasil plated cylinder bores - nickel containing silicon carbide particles. Unfortunately, excessive sulphur from fuel reacts adversely with the nickel, causing very slight blemishes in the top few millimeters of the cylinder bore.[4] [edit] 1996 1996 740iA 750i included Steptronic automatic transmission with manual shift mode. 728i and 735i was launched with traction control, ABS, alloy wheels, dual airbags, air-conditioning, leather upholstery, and electric front seats. 740i and 740iL upgraded from the M60 4.0 L to the M62 4.4 L V8 engine. Steptronic and traction control become standard on 730i, 740i, and 740iL. Steptronic is not available in the North American market until 1999 when the 740i ZSP Sport Package was offered. An Alpina sports suspension, onboard TV and satellite navigation system were offered as options. [edit] 1997 1996 740iA interior 730i/730i SE and 735i/735i SE launched. Equipment includes central locking, front fog lamps and electric heated mirrors; 735i has rear head restraints and electric front seats; 730i SE has a sunroof; 735i SE has air-conditioning, cruise control and leather. *Revisions midway through the model year include front head airbags; automatic air-conditioning on 728i/735i; on-board computer on 728i; DSC III (Dynamic Stability Control) offered on 740i/740iL and 750i/750iL. xenon headlamps were included on 750i/750iL. The 750iL (actually a re-badged 740iL) is extensively featured in the high grossing James Bond series film Tomorrow Never Dies. [edit] 1998 A new ZSP option (Sport Package) includes an Alpina suspension, multi-spoke alloys, sports seats and shadowline exterior trim. Revisions midway through the model year include new front and rear lights, a revised grille, black side sills and valances, and a remote locking with memory system DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) now standard on all 7 series models Satellite navigation system become standard on 750i and 750iL HPS or Head Protection System is introduced and offered as standard on all 7 series models (indicated by HPS badge on interior A-pillar) 'Facelift' from 9/98 production featuring 'scalloped' headlamps, new front fenders with shorter turn signal lenses and side fascia improvements (including elimination of the visible jackpoints) [edit] 1999 The front side of 1999 E38 728i The rear side of 1998–2000 E38 735i The 735 and 740 models receive an improved M62TU V8 engine with single VANOS variable valve timing. The 4.4 engine gets a marked increase in torque from 310 to 324 lb·ft (439 N·m) Horsepower remains at 282 hp (210 kW). A Sport Package becomes available for the 740i which includes: blacked-out exterior "shadowline" trim, Vavona redwood interior trim, 18-way adjustable sport seats, staggered 18-inch (460 mm) alloy wheels, a stiffer M inspired suspension with thicker front and rear anti-sway bars, Steptronic Transmission with higher stall-speed torque converter, and a higher 3.15 final drive ratio (versus 2.92). The 750 receives an improved M73N 5.4 liter V12 engine making a slight increase in power and torque. [edit] 2000 A number of previously optional features become standard, including Xenon headlamps, rain-sensitive windshield wipers, headlight washers, GPS navigation, and upgraded audio including DSP and 6-disc CD changer The sport package is extended to include the 740iL but without the same performance enhancing features as the 740i receives. The 740iL Sport maintains the same visual cues as the 740i Sport such as vavona redwood trim, shadowline exterior trim and 18" staggered alloy wheels. The iL comes standard with EDC for improved handling. In Europe, Adaptive Cruise Control became available as an option. [edit] 2001 2001 E38 740iL (Facelifted) (US) Final year of E38 sales with production ending in July 2001. The last E38 (a silver 740i with black leather interior) rolled off BMW's assembly line on July 27, 2001 to make way for the new E65. The E65 was received so poorly by consumers that sales of E38s increased noticeably in the car's final months of production as people moved to buy the car before it went out of production and used E38s increased in value. Body-colored side skirts and bumper facias, which were previously flat black Clear front and rear turn signal lights replace amber-colored lights. More previously optional features become standard, including a Motorola StarTAC or Motorola TimePort (depending on date of production) with BMW Assist telemetry system. Widescreen Navigation and a faster CD based navigation computer were phased in from 9/00 production on all models. (US Models) Power folding exterior mirrors are now standard on the 750iL, and included in the optional convenience package on all other models. [edit] Tuning Dinan-Modified BMW 750iL The E38 has been successfully modified with a large number of after market performance tools, including free-flow exhaust and intake systems, suspension adjustment, and braking system performance upgrades. [edit] Stretch Limo L7 BMW produced the Stretch Limo L7 after 1997. This car was produced 899 times, and the 750iL was stretched about 10 inches (254 mm). Target markets were the USA, Asia and Arabia. [edit] Flexible Electronics System Since the start of production the entire in-car entertainment system (Radio Function, Navigation System, Television and Telecommunications systems) is based on a very flexible automotive computer system.[5] As a result the E38 models can all be easily upgraded with the newest BMW technologies including BMW's Bluetooth System, the DVD based Navigation system, as well as BMW's CD changers that play MP3s[6] Engine tuning companies such as Alpina, Dinan and Hartge have built both turbocharged and supercharged versions of the M73 V12 motor. [edit] Film Contributing to the E38's continued popularity was its appearance in several films such as Tomorrow Never Dies (750iL), Bumer "Бумер" (750iL), Enemy of the State (740iL), Invictus (740iL), Bad Santa (740iL), Fun with Dick and Jane (740iL), Showtime (740i), The Transporter (735i) which was a one off manual 750i badged as a 735i, and The Game (740iL). Even though it was the only featured car in the series to be replaced the following year, the E38 featured in the BMW Film Ambush which was released in fall 2001. In the 007 James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies, the sixteen E38 cars used during production were modified so they could be driven from the backseat. The car type is actually a BMW 740iL but they were re-badged as the 750iL. One survives today and can be seen at exhibition “TOP SECRET” at Museum Industriekultur, Nuremberg. Besides the 7 Series saloons, BMW also supplied a $14,000 R1200C motorcycle. BMW received the rights to use movie clips from the film in its multimillion-dollar campaign, and during the 1997 holiday season they offered a special promotion that included the R1200C with the purchase of the 750iL.[7] BMW 7 Series car from Tomorrow Never Dies, seen at an exhibition at Museum Industriekultur, Nuremberg. Conventional 7-Series models include the 750i and 750Li, each with rear-wheel drive. New for 2010 are the AWD 750i xDrive and 750Li xDrive. The top-end rear-drive 760Li is also new. The "L" versions of BMW's flagship sedan ride on a wheelbase that is 5.5 inches longer than that of the 750i. All 750i cars are powered by a 400-horsepower 4.4-liter twin turbocharged V8. A 6-speed automatic transmission is standard. The 760Li has a turbocharged 544-horsepower 6.0-liter V12 engine and an 8-speed automatic transmission. Available safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, front-side airbags, knee airbags, and curtain-side airbags. BMW's Active Roll Stabilization, designed to counter body lean, is standard on the 760Li and optional on the 750i and 750Li. BMW's new Integral Active Steering adds speed-sensitive rear-wheel steering to BMW's Active Steering system, which is standard on the 760 and optional on the 750. Standard is BMW's Dynamic Driving Control, which allows the driver to adjust the suspension, throttle response, transmission's shift characteristics, and power steering. A navigation system and wireless cell-phone link are standard along with BMW's iDrive control for audio, navigation, and climate settings. All include steering-linked headlights, front- and rear-obstacle detection, and BMW Assist emergency and concierge service. Other features include blind-spot alert, lane-departure warning, a head-up display, sideview and rearview cameras, and high beams that automatically dim when oncoming traffic is detected. Also offered are a 40-gigabyte hard drive for the audio and navigation systems, which allows for storage of up to 13 gigabytes of music files. A night-vision system, adaptive cruise control, DVD entertainment, and keyless access and engine start are available.
