Cars Car Reviews of BMW X3 2.0d » 1-3 of 3 Car reviews of BMW X3 2.0d I went, I touched, I drove and I left. Advantages: Badge, resale value, Image Disadvantages: Build quality, Not a real 4x4, Price ...CD player is the standard BMW one - nothing special here. This car has so many sensors that I'd be worried that when the warranty is up its all going to fail : Central locking with electronic immobiliser, crash sensors, fuel tank filler flap integrated into the central locking, seat sensors, brake sensors, ... The ride : Not bad. Fairly nimble but don't expect any rapid velocity, if you want that look at a proper car ......Then you get to the BMW options! This is where they make the serious money. The X3 being a soft-offroader with the BMW badge attracts all the fashion options. Adaptive headlights £270.00, Alloy wheels, Aluminium running board £205.00, Auto dimming interior mirror £145.00, navigation system £1425.00, Detachable tow bar £510.00, Electric front seats with driver's memory £820.00, Floor mats £75.00!!, Luggage compartment net £95.00, leather Upholstery ... more I liked the X5 and thought I'd have a look at the new X3 2.0d SE as its fairly economical on paper. After spending some time with the X3 and driving it I came to the conclusion that its a rather bland and boring car. Its far to low to be a serious 4x4 and no where near an Audi estate or even a 5 series.Inside you do get good equipment though: Many airbags - Driver and front passenger airbags with IDA? (impact-depending airbag system), front seat occupancy detector, Head airbag front and rear, Side airbags at the front for driver and front passenger. If you had a serious accident and all the airbags went off I think you'd all get squashed into to middle, bang heads and get injured that way.The interior feels cheap (but the price isn't) and not like the BMW's of the past. The dash layout is standard (Instrument panel with round speedometer and rpm dials, fuel gauge and coolant temperature gauge) but the plastics used look and feel of a lower quality than you'd expect from BMW. Dash is in a dark grey that just looks dated. Small glove compartment (for gloves) which is illuminated and lockable. The Radio and single CD player is the standard BMW one - nothing special here. This car has so many sensors that I'd be worried that when the warranty is up its all going to fail : Central locking with electronic immobiliser, crash sensors, fuel tank filler flap integrated into the central locking, seat sensors, brake sensors, ...The ride : Not bad. Fairly nimble but don't expect any rapid velocity, if you want that look at a proper car and not a 4x4. Because this car has Anti-roll bars front and rear the ride is stable to firm. Dynamic Stability Control, Hill Descent Control (HDC), Park Distance Control (PDC) front and rear (more sensors!)Brakes - Very good. Disc brakes at the front, inner-vented.Off road : I wouldn't want to take my new X3 offroading. Poor ground clearance for a 4x4 and the standard tyres would get you into trouble very fast. The steering wheel housed the cruise control, which I hated and found did not always engage? The Six-speed manual gearbox is nice and probably the best thing about this car. On a long run I think it would come into its own, delivering good fuel economy and a fairly smooth gear change. The gearing is a little short at low speeds but once you get used to it its ok.The Automatic air conditioning which has a microfilter system, condensation and solar sensor. The one I test drove wouldn't turn off and tried to freeze us.In the back : Rear seat bench which is foldable and 60:40 dividable. Centre armrest which includes two cup holders and storage compartment, integrated head rest, ISOFIX Child seat fastenings. There is plenty of room here for three. However, if these three were kids I'm not sure if the plastic and fabrics would last long. The luggage compartment has a cheap textile lining, load capacity is up to 1,560 litres which is not bad. But the ride would suffer is loaded up with heavy stuff.Exterior : Wing mirrors are electrically adjustable and heated. Colour coded door handles, ... Fog lights, Follow-me-home function. But nothing special !!There are a good choice of colours, most of which are metallic: Metallic Black Sapphire, Bluewater, Flamenco Red, Metallic Highland Green, Metallic Mocha Brown, Metallic Mystic Blue, Metallic Silver Grey, Metallic Titanium Silver, Solid Alpine White, Solid Jet Black.Don't go for the solid white, it looks bad, real bad !Then you get to the BMW options! This is where they make the serious money. The X3 being a soft-offroader with the BMW badge attracts all the fashion options.Adaptive headlights £270.00, Alloy wheels, Aluminium running board £205.00, Auto dimming interior mirror £145.00, navigation system £1425.00, Detachable tow bar £510.00, Electric front seats with driver's memory £820.00, Floor mats £75.00!!, Luggage compartment net £95.00, leather Upholstery £1125.00, ...Summary: Personally, I didn't like itmuch at all. It was a little to soft for me, plus the plastics and general tacky build quality just don't seem worth the money this car would have cost. The X3 2.0d SE I was looking at was just over £30k. ...less dogard 03.08.2005 (03.08.2005) Ciao members have rated this car review on average: very helpful Review of BMW X3 2.0d Value for Money Road Handling Comfort Features Fuel consumption Looks Quick review of BMW X3 2.0d A very underrated Sports Activity Vehicle. Mine is the xDrive 20d 2008 model with the 177hp engine. Smooth, powerful (for size) and economic after the petrol 5 series I have been driving. Disregard the old road tests (2004/2005) especially that of Top Gear, the latest model is not the same car. Finish is excellent and easily compares with my previous 5 series Touring. The interior for a start is cheap. The quality of the plastics and the trim do not suggest to me that I have just spent €60,000 (bought in Ireland) on a car. The cabin is tiny, the leg room reminded me of a Ryanair/Easyjet flight, the boot (for what it is meant to be) is tiny. Audi has the Q5 and coming over the hill, looking like a monster, is Mercedes’ GLK. Both are based on newer platforms than the X3 and offer serious, credible alternatives. Can BMW’s baby premium 4x4 still match up? Isn’t the BMW X3 starting to feel a bit old now? Would you believe the X3 only dates to 2004? Evolution has, however, left this BMW behind. Unlock or start the car and you immediately notice you’re using a metal key. Climb aboard and there’s no iDrive – though some may see that as a blessing – while all the main dials and switchgear are shared with the Z4 and look dated. Room in the back is a little tight but the seats are firm and comfortable and the boot big. Granted it’s not up to BMW’s latest standards, but it’s still a premium cabin. What about on the road? The X3 is very much the Mini-Me X5. Firm, driver-focused ride; car-like handling; commanding driving position. And in 2.0-litre turbodiesel form, it’s the real-world compromise with 174bhp, 258lb ft and 42.2mpg. We’ve been hugely impressed with this engine in the 320d saloon, where it's punchy, hugely refined, frugal. But here it doesn’t translate quite so well. At 1825kg, the X3 weighs 230kg more than its 3-series Touring counterpart, so the engine labours and thrashes much more noticeably under load and feels blunted too. Drive it after experiencing most diesels and you’ll still come away hugely impressed and it is good – but the X3 doesn’t showcase this powerplant at its best. The steering is direct if a little artificial, and the seats comfortable. But is it really necessary to have such driver-focused handling for a 4x4? The Nissan Qashqai strikes a better balance here, being far more compliant over bumps – as does the Volkswagen Touareg. Even the bigger Touareg 2.5-litre diesel costs just £305 more. Good job I'm sitting down! I don't care if it's an MPV, repmobile saloon, workhorse van or a Routemaster bus, why can't we have more driver focused handling in whatever we drive. Ben, you are restricted to driving a Yugo 45 for one month in penance. 08 August 2008 08:06 Number One says RE: BMW X3 2.0d CAR review Styling is just plain ugly, the new Mercedes GLK is challenging but at the same time with the right wheels will grow on us (like the c class is doing…not sure about promoting it as the lady car of sex and the city though). The X3 is clearly an end-of-life model selling because it is a BMW (a CR-V is better looking, cheaper and better in all aspects) but at least build quality as improved over the first really bad units. 07 August 2008 18:32 Archibold says RE: BMW X3 2.0d CAR review The headlamps would look quite neat on a citycar or scooter like the way they are shaped like arrows with the indicator built into the end. 07 August 2008 17:35 MAX25 says RE: BMW X3 2.0d CAR review Fully agree it's the runt of the litter and has aged appallingly (yet somehow still sells brilliantly), but can someone please explain what on this green earth Bangle was thinking when he signed off those headlights? Every time I see them they make my eyes hurt. No Bangle-butted, flame-surfaced, banana-silled design feature in the past 7 years comes anywhere near to the sheer awfulness of the headlight unit design on the X3. So wantonly controversial and challenging - willing us to accept that pig ugly is the new beautiful... and not an iota modified in the (relatively for BMW) comprehensive facelift. I think if the headlamps looked different my whole view of the car might be different. 06 August 2008 22:27 Brand0 says RE: BMW X3 2.0d CAR review As painful as it is for me to do so, I must confess that the X3 is the worst car in BMWs catelogue, design-wise. Of course, and as usual, it is technically best in class, but the things it's best at matter less in this particular market. As Pedro wrote, the X5 is such a success that the X3 was always up against it. Seems BMW's attempt to avoid competition within the brand just has not worked like it has with the 3 and 5 series which are both desirable, but different animals. 06 August 2008 10:25 Show all comments Become a CAR contributor Upload stories, photos or videos direct to the site, or email newsdesk@carmagazine.co.uk. Parked alongside the original X5, the new X3 is virtually identical in size, though its emissions and economy are in another league. BMW’s timing with Efficient-Dynamics couldn’t have been better, and as every model has been replaced or upgraded, the fuel and emissions saving technology has been introduced. Featuring the same 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine delivering 184bhp and 280lb-ft of torque that appears in the 520d on long-term test at Fleet News, the X3 is able to reach 62mph in 8.5 seconds. That’s four-tenths of a second quicker than its predecessor, though BMW has achieved the increased performance without environmental penalty. The improved efficiency is largely due to automatic start-stop – available with both the standard six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission – regenerative brakes, electric power steering and on-demand engine auxiliaries. Emissions are down 15%, economy improves by 14%, while power grows by 4% and torque by 9%. The result is that on the official combined consumption cycle, the X3 returns 50.4mpg with CO2 emissions of 149g/km (147g/km for the auto). Those figures eclipse the 45.6mpg and 162g/km delivered by Audi’s 2.0-litre TDI Q5 – a car with 40bhp less than the X3. What’s more impressive is the X3’s emissions and economy better the 47.2mpg and 158g/km delivered by Land Rover’s front-wheel drive eD4 Freelander. BMW is similarly aggressive with the pricing for the X3, with list prices for the X3 xDrive20d SE starting at £115 less than the outgoing car. The £30,490 list price includes standard leather upholstery, two-zone air conditioning and an iDrive-controlled colour display. Optional equipment includes sector firsts like a head-up display, reversing camera with top-view, and a range of packages – though you have to pay £260 for Bluetooth hands-free with a USB audio connection. The automatic costs £1,495. Inside, the X3 feels significantly bigger than its predecessor. Leg and headroom in the rear is improved, as is shoulder room. The boot grows in size too, now offering a class-leading 1,600 litres with the rear seats folded. Fit and finish is significantly improved, and the X3 no longer features some of the low-rent plastics that blighted its predecessor. As well as the classier, more spacious interior, the car drives with a far greater sophistication than before. For that you can thank the engineers responsible for ride and handling. There’s compliance in the suspension, with the X3 coping with bumps and lumps in the road very well indeed. There’s still all the control you’d expect from a BMW – without the bone-jarring ride of its predecessor. In every way it feels like a junior X5 now, the 2.0-litre engine helping here. That powerful engine is quiet and smooth, and the standard six-speed manual gearbox shifts with accuracy. The auto start-stop system is quick to fire when necessary, BMW’s engineers adding software that prevents the car from shutting down when it anticipates the need for a very swift response. The quietness of the engine is matched by a relative lack of road and wind noise – the X3 is a comfortable place to cover big miles in. Despite the new-found ride quality, the X3 retains its driver appeal on more challenging roads. The steering is pleasingly weighted and direct, while keener drivers can specify Dynamic Damper Control and Dynamic Drive Control. Verdict BMW’s X3 is difficult to argue against. It’s great to drive, feels significantly more upmarket and drives very well indeed. Add excellent eco credentials and competitive pricing and the X3 xDrive20d SE is sure to be a big hit among fleets. Report this review After owning two 3 Series previously, at nearly 45k this is the worst value for money car I have ever owned. It has to be the worst BMW for quality. Bits have fallen off it whilst driving, and the interior trim quality is awful. The suspension is hard and unforgiving and extremely uncomfortable on all surfaces except the motorway. Handling in the dry is like tramlines but in the wet forget it - its downright dangerous. Performance is outstanding, but then it should be for that money! The biggest mistake of my life in car ownership. If you want a BM go for the 320d touring it cannot be beaten. If you want a suv don't bother with the x3.
